    I would add to be very polite to the airline and hotel staff. It's not their fault your plans went astray and they are more willing to help if you are polite and not yelling at them!

    Just a quick bit of advice to add to your prep list, Lucy. I used to be a travel agent, and I ran group tours from California to New York to see Broadway theatre shows. My tour conductor always wanted to fly on the overnight flight, which left about 5 minutes after midnight, so technically, your ticket was for the day after you got to the airport, even though before Midnight, you were already on the airplane, but it hadn't taken off yet. Well, one year, my tour conductor called me in the morning and said that one couple didn't show up at the airport! I called them and she said, "Yes, we're all excited and getting ready to fly out tonight!" I told her the flight was LAST NIGHT, and they missed it. The group air tickets were non-refundable and non-exchangeable.
    My advice to her was that the airlines have many phone people who answer the calls, and if you call twice in a row, it's almost 100% you wouldn't talk to the same representative on the second call. Some reps are much more friendly than others. That being the case, I told her to call and immediately start explaining the whole problem and then to ask if they could help her BEFORE ever telling the rep who she was. I said, "If they say that they can't fix the problem, immediately hang up (Without ever telling them your name and flight info) and call right back, over & over until you get a sympathetic rep who will try to fix the problem.
    Well, that's exactly what happened! She called three times, and each time, the rep said, "Sorry - non-refundable - etc. You will have to buy new tickets." The fourth time she called, she hit the jackpot with an understanding rep, and he got his manager to reissue the tickets for the next night's flight without penalty! The reason this works relies on you telling them what happened BEFORE identifying yourself. If they don't know who you are, they can't put a note in the booking record that you already called about this problem and you were turned down. Basically, as far as the airline is concerned, each time you call, you're calling about the problem for the very first time.
    Maybe someday, this tip will make your life a bit easier. Happy cruising!

    Your tips apply to everyone, whether cruising as a passenger or as crew! I made the mistake of flying in the day of the cruise---never again. The cost of that hotel overnight is well worth it in the lack of stress you'll have on embarkation day! I also play the "what it" situation; on my last flight to Europe, I came prepared with a list of many flights that would get me to the ship on time if the worst happened (it didn't). Anyone who has flown much has had situations where planes didn't depart on time or didn't depart at all, but you are right--the more prepared you are, the better your chances of turning the experience into something that will work. This is especially important when you are not making your own bookings! Since I'm usually flying with a family member, we do what I call "musical chairs" luggage. We each place a couple of complete outfits in the other person's luggage--underwear, socks, etc. That way, if one bag is lost, we each have a couple days of clothing in the other bag. And our new addition is Apple Air tags. And if a bag is missing, talk to the hotel and guest services on the ship. THey often have a "hospitality pack" with a toothbrush, comb, etc. that will get you thru a couple days, but they don't always offer it if you con't ask.

    Lucy, this is not only good info for people going to work in Cruise ships but for anyone traveling. I would also add it is not a bad Idea to photo copy or take a picture of all of your credit cards/ Debit cards, insurance card and passport (and a little cash) and keep that on your person separate form where you normally keep those items. It is good back up if your wallet or purse is lost or stolen you know who and how to contact them.

    On our very first cruise (vacation, not as crew), we smartly booked our flight the day before embarkation. Lo and behold, we got to the airport and our flight to Miami was listed as "On Time," then it was suddenly delayed an hour, then 2, then as our aircraft approached the airport and turned around (I was watching it on a flight app), the airline abruptly canceled the flight and said they had no way of getting us to Miami that day on any carrier. We ended up booking a flight from a different nearby airport to Miami through Charlotte later that evening, and we arrived in MIA around 1am on embarkation day, 1 missed dinner reservation and a long day of travel later. That would've been a disaster had we been flying on the same day.
    On to our SECOND cruise: We had planned to fly in a day ahead of time and booked a boutique hotel in South Beach for one night. Flight prices were insane for that day, so it was actually cheaper to fly in 2 days early, even with the extra hotel/meal costs. So I called and added the second night (checking in 1 day earlier than the original plan) to the booking, maybe 4 or 5 months prior to traveling. Concerned that I didn't have anything written confirming the additional day, I called the hotel about a week before the trip and said I wanted to confirm our dates. With no information other than my name, the person said we had 2 nights on the correct dates I had booked. Great! So we flew in with no issues, got to the hotel, and were told that we were a day early and had only booked 1 night....huh? I showed the woman my phone and asked who had been working on the day I had called, and she briskly said "they don't work here anymore," the hotel was booked, and basically we were without a room for that night, no apology, no offer to help find another room, no compensation of any kind....although they DID ultimately refund my money, as I wasn't coming back that second night and they knew they had screwed up, even though they never admitted it. Fortunately, another boutique hotel had availability and were awesome enough to book us the second night (when THEY didn't have availability) in their sister hotel around the corner....they even took our bags there the next day for us! So we had an awful experience with one very unprofessional hotel and a great experience--in a pinch--with another.
    Last June, we flew to MIA through Boston. Our connecting flight (after a scheduled 5 hour layover) was delayed by an hour, then delayed more by a maintenance issue, then we pushed back, sat on the tarmac for 30 minutes, pulled back into the gate for more fuel, then took a crazy (but necessary, not complaining) route to MIA to avoid weather that took us as far west as Pittsburgh(!) before turning south. The 2.5 hour BOS-MIA flight took 4:40, and we were on the plane for over 6 hours, arriving several hours later than planned....another missed dinner reservation, but no missed cruise.

    spot on Lucy!
    however few things to correct;
    -Reason why you get a 1-2 nights in australia(you actually get 1 night stay before embarkation as a rule) has nothing to do with *fixing your body clock*. Company doesnt care about you. It's because of maritime law.
    -Getting 2 check in bags isnt a rule, it's a priviledge and not all the companies do that. Always have 1 check in luggage and 1 small carry on. Anything more will get you tired unnecessarily and unnecessary anyway.
    -ALWAYS TAKE PICTURE OF THE LUGGAGE YOU CHECK IN. You can put an airtag as well.
    -If you lose luggage and you have to embark without it, first thing you do is to inform crew purser, not after *2* days. 2 days will be extremely late since luggage will probably arrive with a later flight(happened to my gf last contract) and will be given to port agent who will deliver to the ship when you embark. That applies if you work on proper cruise lines, not *certain* ones who will tell you *oh luggages get lost all the time* and you have to figure out your gf's luggage while in a quarantine cabin + hotel you stayed is so nice that they actually bring your luggage onboard.
    -Always call the hotel to confirm your booking. Sometimes bookings gets canceled automatically for whatever reason.
    -You dont need to call your manager if you cant make it(it's a courtesy,not a rule). Depending on the cruise line, we get that information anyway. But you need to call hq right away.

    I always get so nervous when flying in before a cruise - I'll now always aim to fly in 2 days early, which is a day earlier than my 'pre COVID' rule. I still find the air industry really unreliable, so worth the extra day in my opinion for 'peace of mind'!

  • @HariSeldon913
    @HariSeldon913 Год назад +4

    After this I now need to ask: Have you ever had a contract where you got from home to your cabin without a single hitch?
    One tip I will add - If you find out you're going to be late and you have the opportunity, call the hotel and let them know you'll be a late arrival. I've heard of places declaring a person to be a no-show if checkin is 3pm and they haven't heard anything by midnight.

    With all the experiences you've had, I would personally pay out of my own pocket one extra night every time I traveled. Tell your travel department that you will send in that extra money which is probably at their corporate rate to do that. Arrive two days early instead of one. Enjoy one day in the hotel on yourself, then the next one on your contract provider. Then on to the ship.

    In general I don't think on the fly. And when I lost my phone in Panama i had not listened to my little voice. That said, write down important phone numbers on a piece of paper and put it in your carry-on luggage. However, I had a friend that pulled all the phone numbers through on my tablet and I was able to get by. So yes, preparation is the key both in your phone and on paper. 2nd mishap, another mystery trip to Barcelona. Told to be at Heathrow at 6am to get my travel details, only to be given a flight from Gatwick. (And the 24 hour emergency line wasn't open, until 8:30, when the original flight was scheduled to leave).

    I travel often alone and I had many (mis)adventures, from missed flights, cancelled flights, missed connections, lost luggage stolen backpack with my passport, airplane ticket (when it was not yet electronic) and 400 Euros, lost wallet, attempted stolen wallet (twice) and many more. I could probably write a book about it. Now, if there is noting weird happening in a trip, I almost think it's boring. You have to take all of it with a grain of salt and don't let it ruin your trip and always have a plan B, and C and D. Also, I know that we are in a paperless age, but I still print all my documents at home before leaving (flights, hotel reservations, copy of my passport and ID...) and also send it by email to an address that I can reach from anywhere.

    My modest story of travel misadventures: Last year I had a cruise on Carnival that I missed because my connecting flight would get to the port city too late. I called the general customer service department for Carnival and they put me through to their Resolutions Department. I squeaked out the details of my flights and cruise as well as I could to the rep, then I was put on hold for quite a while. Then came the verdict - don't come to the port since the ship wasn't delayed and would sail as normal, but because you're such a nice guy, here's FCC for the amount paid. I thought that was nice of them; I'll be taking the makeup cruise later this year. That taught me to allow more time for flights, especially these days when flights everywhere are more unreliable than they used to be.

      Recent story in Australia. Overseas flight from Asia to Melbourne had a medical emergency and landed in Alice Springs. Alice Springs is in the middle of the country and is not an international airport. Passengers were kept on board for seven hours before being allowed into a makeshift area of the terminal as they could not clear customs. Air craft was then found to have a fault (and no doubt crew hours were up) and a replacement air craft was required to fly to Alice Springs to bring the passengers to Melbourne. They arrived the same day, but about 14 hours late. The story does not end here. The flight arrived without luggage so passengers needed to leave details before leaving airport - probably in the early hours of the next day.
