    Just returned from 3 weeks in northern Italy, including a week in Torino. This is one of our favorite cities we've ever visited. Clean, walkable, and elegant. Virtually all of the city center's sidewalks are polished stone covered with arcade porticoes. I think a person could walk 5 miles in the pouring rain and not need an umbrella! A couple of people described Torino as "Little Paris" and "an aristocratic old lady", which are both fitting descriptions. I was surprised by the lack of traffic in the city center, and the minimal number of tourists -- Torino is not a major tourist destination like Venice, Florence, and Rome which is very attractive to us. Virtually everyone we dealt with spoke English. We will likely move here permanently in the next few years.

      We are so glad to hear you say this. We need to keep Torino our little secret, okay?! We are currently in Japan and enjoying ourselves, but despite that this morning over coffee Kevin was expressing how much he misses Italy. We are patiently waiting to get through the process of my dual citizenship so we don't have to spend so much of our time outside of Schengen. We would love to spend a month in Torino and a month in Verona to compare them side by side-and ideally take daily in-person Italian lessons. That would be the dream. Do you have an easier path to living there permanently than my 1948 case? Thanks so much for watching and for sharing your experience! Here's the rest of our playlist from Italy. We enjoyed Genoa as well, but Verona still is our favorite (tied with Torino for now)! -Judy

      @@FindingGinaMarie We currently live full-time in a Colorado mountain resort town. We would likely start out by renting out our condo for 3-6 months at a time and do the Schengen Shuffle. Being in a ski resort area, the rental income from our condo would pay all expenses abroad, including travel to and from. The Colorado summers are as nice as anywhere in the world, so we would probably be there for June - September every year until our bodies can't handle the altitude anymore. No matter what we do, we will not buy real estate in Europe. With the shrinking populations there, it's just not the investment it is here in the US, and squatters are a real issue for homeowners who are not there full-time.

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  Год назад

      That sounds like a great way to balance your time. This way you still also get to keep a home base. I have heard from many people who live in Colorado that they absolutely love it there. For us, although we plan to live in Europe, ideally, we have no intention of purchasing anything. We understand that circumstances might change (either we might need to take care of a sick family member or at some point we may have grandchildren and want to be more accessible. We also don’t want the hassle of trying to sell a home and be at the mercy of the market. San Francisco taught us how convenient it is to enjoy apartment living and have someone else take care of the maintenance! Enjoy your travels! -Judy

    I don't want to compare Torino with other Italian cities, but for me, it remains the most beautiful city in Italy. This city is simply wonderful, it also boasts many records, Torino is the city that has the largest porticoed square in Europe, the first capital of Italy, it has the largest Roman gate in the world "porta palatina", it has the largest area porticoed pedestrian market in Europe, it hosts, outside Egypt, the most important Egyptian Museum in the world. In 1896 in Torino there was the first cinema screening in Italy. The "Porta Palazzo" market is the largest open-air market of Europe, the Mole Antonelliana was until 1889 the tallest building in all of Europe, it is the Italian city where the film industry was first established, it boasts of being one of the greenest European cities if not the largest among them, and many other things. Everything about Torino will win you over, its architecture, its museums, its parks, its squares, its fountains, its food, sweet and savory. Visit Torino, you will be fascinated by it, it is a real jewel, which you will never forget.

It's a beautiful city, and although we think more people should know about it and visit, we're okay if they don't. It will remain less touristed that way and keep its unique and special qualities! We'll be visiting Orvieto, Summonte, and Sardinia this year, as well as introducing our daughter to Italy for the first time, and that will be a whirlwind visit of cities! -Judy

    For your next, longer visit, you should cosider using Turin as your base to visit all of Piedmont. There are so many amazing things to see (and taste 😋).
    Even just staying within the borders of the Metropolitan City of Turin (Turin's extended municipality) you have things such as:
    - Fenestrelle Fortress, the largest alpine fortification in Europe (dubbed the "Great Wall of Italy/Europe").
    - Venaria Reale, the Savoy's royal residence just outside of Turin.
    - The "Palazzina di caccia di Stupinigi", which translates to "small palace for hunting in Stupinigi" but is actually a mini-Versailles (as is Venaria).
    - the Sacra di San Michele (Saint Michael's Abbey), a beautiful medieval fortified abbey perched on top of a peak watching all of Susa valley. It was the structure that inspired Umberto Eco to write The Name of the Rose.
    - Superga's hill, with the homonymous Basilica, funicular, natural park and observatory/planetarium.
    - The huge castle of Moncalieri, overlooking Turin from its hill.
    - The Museo dell'Automobile (Automobile Museum) and the nearby Lingotto (FIAT first factory, built in the 1910s/20s) with its rooftop test track.
    - So many natural parks: Gran Paradiso park, Great Woods of Salbertrand park, the Avigliana lakes one and many others.

    I live here and was so surprised 10 years ago when I arrived. What a beautiful city with so much history, architecture, parcs, art, etc. Nowhere was this highlighted as it should be in travel books. And I am not getting into all the sights outside the city, the multiple palaces that belonged to the King of Italy, the sights in all the valleys surrounding the city, and those found in Piedmont and Valley d’Aosta, just next door. This city should be on the list of cities to absolutely see when coming to Italy!

      Turin is a metropolitan city and Verona a big town. Turin has same excellences even in the aerospace industry.
      I recommend you going around in the Piedmont region by car, visiting the many castes, abbeys (Google sacra di San Michele). The langhe area is famous for its food and wines and where headquarters of Ferrero are based. Yes Piedmont offers a lot to explore and visit.
      There is no sea but beautiful lakes (Maggiore, Orta) aside those in the high mountains surrounding the region

      Thanks, Andrea. Although Turin is different from Verona, there is something about both that for us is very welcoming and suits us. We don't rent cars while we travel for a variety of reasons. We recognize that's not for everyone and we lose out on amazing small towns, but there are a fair number of drawbacks that keep us from doing that. But we know there are a large number of our viewers who feel differently, so thanks for this tip.-Judy

    Turin is really beautiful. I come from Bologna (living in Berlin), and even if I am sorry to hear that Bologna was disappointing for you, I think Bologna is a small city that for many reason plays the role of a big city, with pros and contras. Of course as a local I see it differently, but if I had to chose a city in Italy that is not my hometown I would definitely go for Torino. Torino is fascinating, big but quiet, at the same time offers a lot to do. It is almost like a french city with italian charme.

We'll be exploring even more of Italy this year beginning in about 5 weeks. We recently released a video from Orvieto, a planning video from the Amalfi Coast, and one this week being released on Saturday about a perfect day in Positano, which includes the Path of the Gods. Our daughter joined us for the last two weeks and asked to see as much of Italy as we could squeeze in. It's not how we typically travel, but it was fun to show her some of our favorite places and also discover some new ones that were on her wish list. Here's a link to our full (and ongoing!) series from Italy. I am working towards my Italian dual citizenship, so we visit Italy more than the average full-time travelers! -Judy

      Dear Judy,
      Definitely include Bergamo; it's worth even a short visit. There are still many cities in Italy ahead of us that we plan to visit, so thank you for all the impressions you capture! Maybe Turin isn't a city where I would live, but I see many reasons why someone would - relatively easy public transportation, peaceful and tidy streets, plenty of places to enjoy food and nightlife. For example, I find it much more charming than the more famous Milan, and I'm sorry that many haven't visited it.
      We are looking forward to your new adventures, considering that everything south of Tuscany is left for us. I hope Sicily is first on the list - Palermo and Agrigento (where my grandmother traces her roots through her father whom she never met - he was an Italian soldier stationed in our town who returned to Italy).
      Warm regards,

      Hi Iva, It is definitely on our list now! We are okay that Torino isn't overtouristed, so it's okay that people are missing it ;) But we agree that Milan isn't nearly as charming. Milan is extremely multicultural, which is partially why we don't enjoy it quite as much. We would prefer to be in a place where we need to speak Italian! I'm plotting out our schedule for 2024 and most of our wish list has places in northern Italy. I may have to try to find someplace to spend a block of time in the south so they get equal love! -Judy

      @@FindingGinaMarie Verona was beautiful. However, like all of Italy, extremely packed with crowds everywhere. We went when the weather was still cool. But our challenge was finding how to avoid mass tourism at every place we went. One of our most enjoyable days was hiking up to the Santuario della Madonna di Lourdes. We ended up doing this because we were planning to take a train somewhere (Florence?) but there was a one-day rail strike. One thing more: there is cigarette smoking everywhere and the cars drive crazy. Our two most enjoyable things were taking $5 bus rides to Garda on Lake Garda and on another day to Sirmione.

I do think that everybody has gone to Italy this year, although I thought Genova and Torino were manageable, despite being there in mid June. Unfortunately, cigarettes are in so many places in Europe that it's hard to escape them. And ditto for cars. We were shocked at the laws in Poland that require a full stop by vehicles whenever someone is at a crosswalk, and that means not driving around them but waiting until they cross. That's something we've seen nowhere else. We've not seen Lake Garda nor Sirmione. We may need to take a look at them. Thanks for sharing your experiences. -Judy

    Enjoying your videos! My father in law was born in Italy so husband on his way to citizenship via consulate and I am immersing myself in learning Italian, so I can take the citizenship test when his goes through. We just spent ten days in Venice, Vicenza and Malcesine (a Lake Garda town I highly recommend you visit). Verona was a day trip for us on a hot sunny Saturday, and despite it being October, Verona was *slammed* with people, so I confess I wasn't crazy about it. We should've visited it at a quieter time. We really liked Vicenza though -- it's such an easy drive to Marco Polo airport, as well as the mountains and sea and Lake Garda... Italy just seems like a no-brainer, doesn't it?

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  Год назад +1

      How lucky you are to have spent time in Italy. We were there in July and we are already missing it! Hearing about how crowded Verona was is not good news. I know so many parts of Italy have been swamped this year. We always have felt that it's crowded during the day during peak seasons, but most of the tourists have been day trippers so the nights and certain parts of the week are less busy. What you are saying is not good news. We haven't visited Vicenza or the town in Lake Garda, but we will add it to our list. We are planning to be back in Italy early next spring. And yes, it absolutely is a no brainer. It's hard because there is so much of the world we still want to explore, but Italy is always calling to us like a patient but persistent old friend! My dual citizenship process is moving so slowly, but we hope that we'll eventually blink and be through it because time is passing and we are busy in the meantime. But we do wish it would happen sooner! Have you seen our other videos from Italy? I'll link them below along with some of the articles I've written from some of our time in Italy. Yes, I have seen your other videos and we are intrigued by your "six cities" video. But also now you have put Turin on our list. (Interestingly, decades ago I saw an article about the bicerin drink in Vogue magazine and actually cut it out, still have it in a paper file -- pre internet lol) We are also wanting to check out Lucca and Genoa areas. Visited Bolzano a few years ago which turned us on to Northern Italy generally. Don't get too alarmed about Verona, it may honestly have been mostly italian day trippers... maybe they like visting the "centri storici" on fall weekends? ... like suburban day trippers in any American city. But I will say Vicenza does seem a little more "chill" than Verona or Padova.

      Hi Kathleen, First off, I'm jealous! Secondly, congratulations and how fun that sounds! I recently did an article where I ranked my top six cities, which I'll link below. One place that isn't on there is Palermo, but for your purposes, I'd definitely consider it as one of the cities since Sicily really is its own thing to explore.It's a long train ride to get there, but there are a lot of small towns and even Catania area to explore on your way as well. Obviously, we loved Turin and Verona. I might choose Verona, Lecce, and Sicily so you could have a rounded experience of various regions, although there's a lot you can do from Turin as well. But Kevin thinks Florence is a little more central than Verona, and Bologna has trains running through it everywhere (it wasn't our favorite city, but it is a major hub). I chose Lecce because there are a ton of small towns nearby to explore and the Puglia region is fairly popular, especially if you have a car. Have you seen our entire playlist from Italy? I'll link that below as well! Sorry I can't narrow it down to three! But what a problem to have! Please let us know what you ultimately decide! -Judy

      Hi, I lived all my 28 years in Torino and I wholeheartedly recommend it. It's one of two extraordinary panoramic points (the other one being "Monte dei Cappuccini" on the hillside behind "La Gran Madre"). On the hill of Superga you'll find a beautiful basilica built in a mixture of baroque and neoclassical architecture, the tombs of the House of Savoy (with the exception of Vittorio Emanuele II, first king of unified Italy, and Umberto I who are buried in the Pantheon in Rome), and probably even more important on the back of the basilica you'll find a monumental memorial to "il Grande Torino" which even if you don't care at all about football (or soccer) I recommend to see a video about that team and its tragedy because it's important to understand the city, and I speak as a lifelong supporter of the opposing side Juventus.@@FindingGinaMarie

We need to see them side-by-side to see which we prefer, but we have a lot of time before we need to decide and there could be many more Italian cities or other places in the world that steal our hearts. ♥️ -Judy

    As I have commented elsewhere, I too fell pretty hard for Torino, which meets all of your (and my) criteria for a livable city. We are planning our fourth visit in October; still much left undone, including vermouth at one of the bars built into the retaining wall along the Po. I hesitate to tout my favorite homey, wine-focused trattoria, but L’Alcino at the edge of the old Roman Quarter is a wonderful place. Simple, earthy goodness in an intimate setting and very reasonable prices. If you go, tell Angelo his friend Giovanni from New York sent you.

      @FindingGinaMarie  5 месяцев назад

      Jonathan, we will never tire of hearing of support for Torino! In putting together our video for Verona, we were thinking through how expensive accommodations are there and how prices still are a bit more reasonable in Torino. Fourth visit?! We are very jealous! We had hoped to visit with our daughter, but we ran out of time. Thank you for sharing your favorite trattoria. You can bet we will visit again and say hello to Angelo for you! We love this! ♥️ -Judy

      Verona is also delightful. I think one reason we liked it slightly less than Verona relates to why, as you say, the prices are a bit higher in Verona (which is good to know; I hadn’t noted that): Verona is quite a bit more touristy (see, e.g., the lines to get in to see Juliet’s balcony).
      By the way, a large, lively family-friendly trattoria we really enjoyed near Piazza Erbe in Verona is called Greppia.

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  5 месяцев назад

      Hi Jonathan, You are right about Verona being more touristy, however, the tourists are there for the day, so there's a bulk of time when people aren't around. Also, they're visiting Juliet's balcony and then they've checked it off their list and they've moved on. They aren't typically lingering for days, at least compared to places like Florence. But I was quite surprised at the prices. When we were looking previously, we were told that €1400 per month would get you a very nice apartment. Now I'm not so sure. Maybe it's just the price of Airbnbs and hotels that has gotten high, but it is a shame. Thanks for the suggestion about Greppia. Piazza Erbe is very touristy, but I just love that square! We look forward to checking it out! -Judy

    I lived there for 3 months when I was little back in 2005. But I wasn't able to see much. Most of the time my walks where just from home to school and from school to home. :)) You should also visit in Torino (Turin) Basilica Superga which is an amazing cathedral situated on a beautiful hill that gives a nice view over the city. Plus the city is famous for its car industry (it is the motor city of Italy or the Detroit Of Italy) - you can visit the old FIAT factory (Italian Automobile Factory which now builds the FIAT cars, the performance Alfa Romeo cars etc, I think they still own 10% of Ferrari and they also own Maserati if I'm not wrong..plus now Jeep because they merged with Chrysler from U.S.A...I hope I'm not wrong) where they have that famous mini NASCAR style racetrack on the roof - a famous scene from the legendary movie THE ITALIAN JOB was filmed there. Ooh and let's not forget the famous automobile museum which is one of the best in the entire world (with everything from Ferrari Formula 1 cars, Lamborghini, Alfa Romeo, Mercedes, BMW, Ford Mustang..you name it) and it is in UNESCO. They have a few legendary car design companies that have designed many legendary cars from around the world. They have like a school\university famous all around the world were you can get a degree/diploma in car design and you can work for any car company in the world. Also some scenes for the latest Fast and Furios movie (Fast X) with Vin Diesel where recorded there..but in the movie they used the footage in combination with the scenes from Rome..they described as Rome in the movie (what a shame). If you love football (soccer if you are from U.S.A.) they have the legendary Juventus football (soccer) club where even Cristiano Ronaldo played and other famous players such as the french legend Zidane, Ibrahimovic or the iconic italian goalkeeper Buffon. Also the famous drink Martini is made over there (the famous brand Martini that you also see it as a sponsor on race cars.. you know the famous Lancia Group B rally car with the Martini logo - you can see it at the car museum). I also think that somewhere around Torino, over there in the Piedmont region, in one of the small towns that are around there, there is a well known school or something like that dedicated to gastronomy - after you graduate you become somekind of a Gordon Ramsey something like that. :)) ❤

      Thanks so much for sharing these additional insights into Turin! Very cool to have lived there, even if it was when you might have been too young to appreciate how cool of a place it is. Sounds like you are making up for it now! I think the school you are mentioning is The University of Gastronomic Sciences, which is south of Turin in Pollenzo. Last night we watched Ford versus Ferrari (which we've seen before, but definitely worth a second viewing), and it motivated us to visit Modena and Ferrari the next time we are in Italy later this year. We have so much more of Italy we want to see, but we are going to try to squeeze in a few days in Turino if we can and we'll definitely add some of your locations to our list of places to visit. • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  5 месяцев назад

      Hi Tracy, we love hearing you will be in Turin soon. Please tell us what you think of it when you get back. We really wanted to squeeze in a trip there this year, but I don't think it's going to work. It's funny you should ask about our travel to the US. We are actually in the US right now. My birth mother (I'm adopted and found my birth mother just before the pandemic lock down!) just turned 80 and we celebrated with a family trip with her to San Diego. We visit the US typically once per year. We do not have a home base, so we don't come back to the US to swap out clothes. Everything we own we carry with us. We do use this time in the US to refresh some of our gear, but that's only because Amazon and other vendors have most everything we need here! The primary reason we visit is because we have three children and family and friends we try to meet up with. It's tricky because our families are scattered all across the US, so we never get to see everyone. Our time in the US is typically our most expensive time because we have to rent cars here in order to get around to seeing everyone.
      Last year we came back to the US after our time in the Schengen region was up and before we set off on a 7-month trip to Asia/Southeast Asia. We usually coordinate our trips back to the US to times when the flights will make the most sense or when we need to be back for a special occasion. I have an aunt turning 93 in November, so in 2025, we probably will try to visit to celebrate her birthday in California. We have family in California, Texas, Arizona, and Buffalo, New York, so people are quite spread out. -Judy

      We wish we had that opportunity. We were only in Turin and Genoa for a week apiece and did not have time to travel beyond the inner city because some of that time involved working on RUclips. We absolutely adore Italy, but we haven't managed to slow travel there and spend an entire month. We'll be in several cities in Italy this year-Orvieto, fast travel for two weeks (with our daughter to show her around several cities-her preference, not ours. We'd rather deep dive into a few places, but that's not how she prefers to travel), Summonte (where my grandfather is from), and then finally a month in Sardinia. Hopefully we'll get a chance to check out some vineyards while we're there. The only vineyard we've visited is one in San Gimignano, which was very nice. We are going to try to hit a vineyard when we're in Verona or Florence as well. It's not our ideal way to do wine tasting, but we did a city tour in Verona, which was good, and a lunch in Florence that involved several wine pairings. We had some of those wines shipped back to us when we still lived in the US. -Judy

    Torino è stata sempre legata a leggende esoteriche riguardanti la magia bianca e nera, tanto da essere chiamata la "città magica". Si trova infatti nel punto di intersezione tra due triangoli, quello della magia bianca con Praga e Lione e quello della magia nera con Londra e San Francisco.

Also, if you stay in Airbnbs for a month if you can take that much time, you will save a lot of money on accommodations. Some people even use TrustedHousesitters to offset accommodation costs in exchange for watching a home and/or caring for a family's pets while they travel. It's an interesting way to see the world with lower overhead. It requires a subscription, but it potentially will save you a lot of money if you can travel frequently. I do understand that it is hard to find work in Italy in general, and the one benefit to native Italians is that many are living in multigenerational homes.
