Nash Point Lighthouse - Fog Horn

- This sounds loud - but try standing next to it when it goes off - Impressive!
Manned by Trinity House volunteers the Lighthouse is open March to October weekends - for a small fee well worth a trip but the Fog horn is free as the Wales Coast Path goes right past - fog horn only sounds at certain times best to check!
The single most memorable sound effect of 2019 cinema.
reminded me of silent hill ... in fact a lot of the lighthouse reminded me of silent hill, in a good way
This sound is haunting. The first time I saw this movie I genuinely felt fear JUST by the looming foghorn that goes through nearly the whole movie.
@@coreyeagles4718 im assuming he's talking about The Lighthouse
I think they sampled this for the movie
2nd best movie of 2019
I honestly thought they manipulated the sound for the movie The Lighthouse to make it sound more haunting. It's otherworldly.
Nick LeMec I’m not sure if you’ll see this, but nice Brand New profile pic :)
Me too. I thought it was a specially engineered sound, but I guess a lot of foghorns sound like this
@@martinshewfelt1236 i think that each foghorn is supposed to sound different so you can identity the location. Like each lighthouse beam is different.
@@martinshewfelt1236 this is a fog siren not a horn. It has trumpets to make the sound of the siren louder but its no horn
@@slickstrings some lighthouses had horns like diaphones and others had air horns as in super tyfons and some had sirens as in the case of this one as in his is a SIREN! No horn can emulate a rapid rising of sound like a fog siren as it works the same as smaller electric or compressed air sirens

This exact sound is used to great effect in The Lighthouse (2019) starring Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, which I highly recommend
That sound was fucking hypnotic. I loved it.
top ten best movie experience ever
I went to see the movie The Lighthouse stoned out of my mind. I couldn’t find any friends who wanted to see it much less have even heard of it...so I went solo. The theater it was playing in was the smallest I’ve ever been in and as I was walking down the aisle making my way in, I noticed it was very warm. The theater probably sat around 30 people or so and I had to sit in between complete strangers. Once the movie started, I started to bug out!! I had tightness in my chest, my palms were sweaty, I was having a hard time breathing and sitting still. Then I heard the sound of the horn and I nearly lost it!!! It really got to me, so much so that I was on the verge of getting up and walking out. I’m so glad I didn’t. It was truly a very intense experience and an incredible film.
I can’t even imagine seeing this movie stoned. I already get paranoid. I would lose it
tyce Shirrell Seriously, I nearly had a full blown anxiety attack!
I saw this movie in cinema too, was mindblown!!
"Bad luck to kill a seabird!"
Omg you poor soul 😂
I did watch this movie at the cinema by myself. Nobody wanted to go with me but I just couldnt not watch this insane piece of art.
I can’t get this sound out of my head so soothing. Thanks The Lighthouse
I didn't realize a real foghorn sounds exactly like in the movie.
Richard Santanna this one does, but not all do
They needed to sound unique, just like the painted patterns on the tower and the pattern of flashes on the light - all clues to help mariners know where they are at sea
Its no horn as its a siren
@@jezcolborne6329 though the soundmaking device used is a type of siren, the nautical terminology used is still "horn". Just like how a ship's whistle is still called a "whistle" even though they're usually a pneumatic horn nowadays.
@@kberkstr to me its still a siren that sounds through HORNS on top of the fog signal building. A horn has a diaphram or cylinder which goas back and forth to create the sound. This is a fog siren

I watched Joker in September and I could hear this every now and then in the background because the Lighthouse was playing in another room in the same theater. I watched the Lighthouse on Halloween night. I enjoyed both movies but I love the Lighthouse more. Something about that foghorn is very moving.
I like the thumping sound it makes right before it activates.

Yer drunker than a virginy fence.

I think they used this exact sound for the trailer for The Lighthouse
The sound from the Nash Point fog horn was so comforting to hear as a child from our house at the top of Porthkerry hill in Barry whilst tucked up in bed on a winters night, also the lightship lamp light sweeping across the bedroom walls through the curtains in the 1960s.
Sorry but that is a fog siren because of how it ramps up. A super tyfon can't do that and that is a HORN like a diaphone is a horn. The only other air power device that can do that is a steam whistle because of how much steam you want to put in the whistle

Every fog signal is unique. New subscriber.
I've good memories of that. My grandparents used to live in Southerndown. We always visited them in our summer vacations(we live in Germany) and we were always scared when the horn blew off in the nights 😉

Its a siren not a horn

Whitby lighthouse has a very similar horn. It had the nickname "mad bull" because it sound like this, but lower in pitch, like a bellowing bull
This ain't no horn it's a large fog siren
Damn ye! Let Neptune strike ye dead, Winslow! HAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRK!!!!!!!!
Ah I’ve gone through 2 foghorn videos to find the right sound. That’s that menacing sound.
Missed the heydays of maritime past. You had the lighthouses and fog horn guiding ships away from the coast. Arrr matey.

Unfortunate side effect: driving lighthouse keepers crazy.
Is this video gonna be loaded with Lighthouse references? Yes. Yes it is.
I remember this so well as I was 11 years old trying to get to sleep. I'm 64 now. I lived in St Mellons. (Old village.)
...Yer fond o’ me foghorn though, ain’tcha boy? D:
Growing up in Rhoose, only experienced the incredible phenomenon of a true doldrums British fog a few times. The complete silence, but for two things - the desperate horns of boats in the channel trying to stay safe in the pea soup, and this siren. Reminds me of the other - far creepier - phenomenon that anyone from Barry will know - the chemical incident siren at Dow Corning. Mum and Dad's first flat together was on the fence line of the chemical works, and they knew if the siren went, they likely were in deep trouble. I always got a kick out of bringing other installers from the Valleys to Barry on a Monday to assist on a job and seeing their varied reactions when a literal second world war siren went off at 3:15PM for the weekly test.
Side note, I love how this comments section has brought together local people who grew up in South Glamorgan and randoms from all over the world who watched The Lighthouse. Not often our bumpkin farm county is featured in international media.

As soon as it plays
I start singing "spotlight yeah, moonlight yeah"
"HAAAAAARRRRK!!!"
Hark! Triton, hark! Bellow, bid our father the Sea King rise from the depths full foul in his fury! Black waves teeming with salt foam to smother this young mouth with pungent slime, to choke ye, engorging your organs til’ ye turn blue and bloated with bilge and brine and can scream no more -- only when he, crowned in cockle shells with slitherin’ tentacle tail and steaming beard take up his fell be-finned arm, his coral-tine trident screeches banshee-like in the tempest and plunges right through yer gullet, bursting ye -- a bulging bladder no more, but a blasted bloody film now and nothing for the harpies and the souls of dead sailors to peck and claw and feed upon only to be lapped up and swallowed by the infinite waters of the Dread Emperor himself -- forgotten to any man, to any time, forgotten to any god or devil, forgotten even to the sea, for any stuff for part of Winslow, even any scantling of your soul is Winslow no more, but is now itself the sea!
That is haunting!
Sounds like spotlight uh moonlight uh
