My main 40 hour a week job Mon-Fri is an electronics technician who works on a LOT of arcades, redemption games, jukeboxes, photo booths etc and this was super entertaining to see you do it from a fresh perspective. I enjoy what I do and am glad you got some personal satisfaction out of the little things on your machine like I get to do every day. Keep up the good work Clint!
When I worked at Chuck E. Cheese’s, I took great care and attention at keeping the games and machines in good order. I found a lot of the old manuals, made adjustments to the settings to put them in compliance with company policy, and found long-since dead lights and fuses and implored my boss to order the replacement parts so we could get those machines looking as new and fresh as possible. Props for upgrading the plastic coin mechs to proper metal. The plastic ones never felt right, got jammed easier, etc.
I’m glad to hear someone at Chuck E’s took good care of the machines. The ones at our local restaurant were always a little on the busted side. Except for the 4+ player beat-em-ups like X-Men and TMNT... those were always in great working order, probably because they made the most money.

So it was a healthy mix between the good stuff like the classic Skee-Ball machine, and the slightly newer things like the basketball hoops and coin pusher games. Mainly I got satisfaction at bringing back to life visual cues on the older 80’s/90’s machines that had been neglected for so long.
I totally get the substance of this video. It's the little details, the ones that aren't something everyone is going to notice, but you will. Not to mention, they add an air of completeness to the project. It's like, I'm building a retro gaming PC, and I have an nVidia GeForce FX 5500 in it for graphics, and I've been searching high and low for one of those 3D puffy "jelly" badges that the FX 5500 would have come with that says "GeForce FX Series". Even the tiny details, _especially_ the tiny details, make a project worth it in the end.
I know. I was the same with my Q9650 build, finding the right metallic stickers, like the more recent holographic "Intel Core 2 Quad Inside" sticker, a "Designed for Windows XP / Windows Vista Capable" one & so on, which I was able to find sets of on eBay.
Oh I know the kinds of stickers you're talking about, they're commonly known as gel stickers or dome stickers, always loved seeing those on products back in the day.

I use to work as an arcade tech, 80-90% of my job was cleaning the coin mechs would jam and all the dust, dirt and grim from everything the coin systems like you showed and all the controls would get "gummed" up like this, then the dust always getting dust off the PCBs and power suppllies, so many systems i would see dead due to heat and burning up cause of dust build up.
How did you end up cleaning the dust from the PCB and power supplies? I can imagine using a vacuum or compressed air after you take it outside, or rubbing it with something dampened by alcohol, but I don't know if that would be effective enough.
You can clean PCBs in the sink, or dishwasher. I did it on my Neo Geo board and it looks brand new. Make sure to remove any batteries, and be sure to rinse the board with alcohol to make sure all the water is gone/dry.
@@AxialFlux How do you rinse the board with alcohol? The best I can imagine is getting a ton of alcohol in a tub and repeatedly pouring cupfuls of it over the PCB, but that seems ridiculous. There's got to be a better, cheaper way of doing that. Would putting alcohol into a spray bottle do the trick?

Then he started buying broken units and fixing them (or keeping them if the customer did not end up paying for the repairs made). Then he would offer them to bar, restaurant, and coffee shop owners, and he would get a % of profit. He saved up enought money to set up his own restaurant, debt free. He had a problem unit, he would fix it and it would fail again in two months or so. So he ended up lending it to me, until it failed again. Te coin mechanism was set up to accept anything roughly metalic and round. It was set up on our garage. Soon we had all kids in the neighborhood coming to play, using real coins. Only time in my life I had a satisfactory amount of "pocket money", lol.
You just reminded me of that Seinfeld episode when they need to save the Frogger high score and transport the machine. If that chip were around, they wouldn't have much of an episode.

@Marginally Sapient Cactus Actually, Dimes and quarters were made out of silver for 1932 through 1934 if my memory is correct(I collected coins years ago). They look like normal quarters and you can find them in your change time to time. A silver quarter in good shape can be worth around $70, or so, so not always worthless... I have a few that I just got in change, if you drop 2 quarters they make a known sound but, the silver ones even the dime does not...

Nothing says retro gaming like woodgrain paneling. I love it!! Missile Command is a classic. I'm really digging the sheer size of the arcade cabinet. It's almost as big as an Arcade1Up arcade cab without the riser.
Man I love the looks of those old circuit boards! Nowadays, a chip the size of a Q-tip, can do everything that entire board does... times, how they change... My game was Tempest, but Missile command is fun too...
In the early 80's after this machine came out it became common to roll a custom ULA for a machine like this, basically 1 chip that'd replace most of those small 74 series logic chips, it was drastically cheaper to get your own chip made than having to get dozens of discrete logic chips.
It starts innocently. One here, one there...then one morning you wake up and your entire house has been exact-fitted with arcades everywhere, your garage is an arcade repair shop. And you found a group of guys and galls who love them as much as you do, that come for "arcade parties" every two or three weeks.
Ive always been fascinated with these cabaret cabinets and I've been working on getting my own arcade cabinet recently. Love the upgrades and personal touches!
Wish I could thumbs up a million times. Getting obsessed over fixing little details pretty much describes any part of a hobby I get in to, it feels so satisfying to see you fix all the small stuff you might not even see everyday, but you KNOW you've fixed it, and it's perfect.

I would have to check, but I believe there is now a high score kit for Frogger as well. If you didn't know the original game does NOT keep high scores with initials. It just shows the score and ranking. So you had to just know who's scores were whose back then.

@@LGR you just can't go wrong with the Ender 3. $200 base price and then you can start modding it with the things you really need. no need to pay $800 for a Prusa.
3D printers are cool, but not helpful in reproducing certain things like coin reject buttons and even coin door bezels, etc, or most trim on control panels. Control panels and especially coin doors were built to be kicked by snot nose teenagers, you need metal to get the right look and feel. Refurbing arcade games is an odd mixture of scavenging the internet and then also fabricating your own parts for those times when your cabinet frame is rotting from the bottom, etc., and for the structural stuff inside the cabinet where most people wouldn't see it - arcade owner/operators back in the day didn't have 3D printers! Do it the old school way!
@LGR For something small like a token, you'd get the best results from a 3D printer that uses resin, although the post processing of the prints can be quite messy. But you can't argue with the awesome results. Heck, you could probably make your own custom keycaps too.
I can agree with filling up the coin tray with quarters. I've always liked that sound, too. It may seem odd, but the bright side is that you'll never run out of quarters to use for the machine.

Preppers, or just people looking for a unique home, like to buy them. Problem is, not everyone has that kind of money (I found prices of anywhere from $400,000 to $3.2 million). Plus, not all of them are in great shape, having been decommissioned more than 50 years ago, so it could be quite a project to renovate.

Man, this takes me back. Back to the days where there were these places called "Arcades" where kids and young adults would gather to play the latest video games. My game of choice was "Lunar Lander". Loved that one. Also, your next step should be the side stickers to replace wood grain cabinet.
Clint as a guy who used to work as an Arcade Tech this video brought back some great Memories of fixing old units like this. Somewhere in the Wichita Kansas Area there is a Centipede/Millipede/Bowling System I rebuilt from the Ground up.
Missile Command and Centipede both had to have a track ball (an inverse mouse, if you will. Get off my lawn kids today don't even know a mouse had a trackball inside it back in the 90's!). I'm with LGR here, I found Missile Command to be absolutely fiendish and therefore draining of my 10 pences (the UK equivalent of a USA quarter).

Soaking the sheet in cold strong tea for a while and then drying it would give you the yellow color you are looking for. Test on a blank sheet first to get the timing right.
At first it seemed like some of those changes would have been rather difficult and technical but found it so satisfying, seeing how simple each change was and how so many little touches like that really made a huge impact.
10:17 When I did something like this, I printed it out on overhead acetate, and printed it more than once. so they could be stacked on top of each other. This makes the black more opaque and because it's printed on transparent acetate, lets more light through where there's no print.

Very nice little original details there. Love the idea of putting a ton of coins in the coin tray for the "correct" money drop sound! A lot of work obviously went into this. Glad it payed off!
I've been rebuilding my empty Smash TV converted to a Killer Instinct 2 cabinet, sadly the cabinet was damaged and I got it from a local shop friend in town, into a MAME/JAMMA cabinet. It never had coin-op mech included, but I found someone with a midway coin-op mech and I was super excited, I also had to do some repairs to the entire assembly. But it was so satisfying after getting it to work and got the bucket installed. Nothing is even more satisfying than having a full-ish bucket as you mentioned for that metal coin action!
That 8 Bit Pit guy, whose name I've forgotten already, is a top notch dude for sending you all that stuff. The machine is really cool. Whenever I see the Missile Command game, I think of T2 when John Connor and his friend go to the arcades.
They may be small upgrades, but boy are they satisfying to watch. As soon as you mentioned replacing the coin return labels, I knew the LGR logo was coming in! I love that reference/test chart on the back panel. Seeing it lined up perfectly through the electronics when you reinstalled it was my favorite part. I also gained some insight on how to play Missile Command. I had it on my 2600 but I had no idea how to play it as a kid and haven’t thought about it since. Now I wanna give it another shot!

I felt nerdy and financially imprudent for buying my OSSC and automatic SCART switcher, but that's nothing compared to dropping $200 IN QUARTERS on an authentic quarter-insertion sound. That is next level.

Cleaned, straightened, lubed up, and working smooth... how fantastic! The arcade I work at does a ton of coin door/mech restoration amd it's an ongoing battle. If I had to guess as to what caused the damage to the coin mechs to begin with, I'd say employees who removed the coin tray too aggressively probably slammed the mech structures a few times. Older arcade coin trays are already a hassle to remove(especially when they're full), and if you're tired or in a hurry it's a little too easy to accidentally hit the coin mech structure when pulling the tray out. I'm happy to see this classic arcade getting some love!
I'm sure it's been mentioned but hitting the Coin buttons (or any plastic you want to be shiny) with some rubbing compound will buff out most of the very fine scratches and really make them shine. If you wanted to go even further with some soap, water, and 2000-3000 grit sandpaper available at any auto parts store you can lightly sand out all the imperfections then use the rubbing compound to polish it to a glass like finish. I've done this on many vintage parts and it really makes them look better than new, plus it keeps the original parts which is always nice.
Tokens can be bought relatively cheap (for the amount you get) .. you'd need to replace the plastic part of the mech's tho. they have to match the tokens. (experience from my Asteroids deluxe ) i did get a little lucky on my end i got my token mech's from a chucky cheese that was going outa business so i got a bucket of tokens to go with it. kept my quarter mech's to tho.
Watched you on The Friendship Onion yesterday and it led me to finding your RUclips channel. I recently acquired two vintage cocktail arcades: dedicated Mrs. Pacman and Space Invaders Deluxe. Both are in fantastic condition. It almost looks like the Space Invaders was barely used.

Yep, it's a 40-year-old arcade game used by the public and "maintained" by countless random people over the decades. These things get beat up, it's a fact of life!
@@LGR There are replacement harness connectors and female pcbs you can buy, I would honestly advise replacing the harness connector and soldering the edge connectors of the board to a new PCB, it should help frevent future damage to the board

Nothing says retro gaming like woodgrain paneling. I love it!! Missile Command is a classic. I'm really digging the sheer size of the arcade cabinet. It's almost as big as an Arcade1Up arcade cab without the riser.
This brings me back to working at an arcade in an amusement park back in high school/college. Those machines were fun to open up and tinker with.

Man I love the looks of those old circuit boards! Nowadays, a chip the size of a Q-tip, can do everything that entire board does... times, how they change... My game was Tempest, but Missile command is fun too...

In the early 80's after this machine came out it became common to roll a custom ULA for a machine like this, basically 1 chip that'd replace most of those small 74 series logic chips, it was drastically cheaper to get your own chip made than having to get dozens of discrete logic chips.

It starts innocently. One here, one there...then one morning you wake up and your entire house has been exact-fitted with arcades everywhere, your garage is an arcade repair shop. And you found a group of guys and galls who love them as much as you do, that come for "arcade parties" every two or three weeks.

Wish I could thumbs up a million times. Getting obsessed over fixing little details pretty much describes any part of a hobby I get in to, it feels so satisfying to see you fix all the small stuff you might not even see everyday, but you KNOW you've fixed it, and it's perfect.

I would have to check, but I believe there is now a high score kit for Frogger as well. If you didn't know the original game does NOT keep high scores with initials. It just shows the score and ranking. So you had to just know who's scores were whose back then.

@@LGR you just can't go wrong with the Ender 3. $200 base price and then you can start modding it with the things you really need. no need to pay $800 for a Prusa.
3D printers are cool, but not helpful in reproducing certain things like coin reject buttons and even coin door bezels, etc, or most trim on control panels. Control panels and especially coin doors were built to be kicked by snot nose teenagers, you need metal to get the right look and feel. Refurbing arcade games is an odd mixture of scavenging the internet and then also fabricating your own parts for those times when your cabinet frame is rotting from the bottom, etc., and for the structural stuff inside the cabinet where most people wouldn't see it - arcade owner/operators back in the day didn't have 3D printers! Do it the old school way!
@LGR For something small like a token, you'd get the best results from a 3D printer that uses resin, although the post processing of the prints can be quite messy. But you can't argue with the awesome results. Heck, you could probably make your own custom keycaps too.
I can agree with filling up the coin tray with quarters. I've always liked that sound, too. It may seem odd, but the bright side is that you'll never run out of quarters to use for the machine.

@@hwykng82 You *can* get those, actually. All the military hardware's been removed, of course. I think there may be... about a dozen up for sale? Preppers, or just people looking for a unique home, like to buy them. Problem is, not everyone has that kind of money (I found prices of anywhere from $400,000 to $3.2 million). Plus, not all of them are in great shape, having been decommissioned more than 50 years ago, so it could be quite a project to renovate.

Man, this takes me back. Back to the days where there were these places called "Arcades" where kids and young adults would gather to play the latest video games. My game of choice was "Lunar Lander". Loved that one.
Also, your next step should be the side stickers to replace wood grain cabinet.
Clint as a guy who used to work as an Arcade Tech this video brought back some great Memories of fixing old units like this. Somewhere in the Wichita Kansas Area there is a Centipede/Millipede/Bowling System I rebuilt from the Ground up.

True that! It's why I bought an X-Arcade Tankstick for MAME back in the day, having a trackball is essential.
Missile Command and Centipede both had to have a track ball (an inverse mouse, if you will. Get off my lawn kids today don't even know a mouse had a trackball inside it back in the 90's!).
I'm with LGR here, I found Missile Command to be absolutely fiendish and therefore draining of my 10 pences (the UK equivalent of a USA quarter).

Soaking the sheet in cold strong tea for a while and then drying it would give you the yellow color you are looking for. Test on a blank sheet first to get the timing right.

I keep a Pacman board I fixed next to the TV. It's amazing how big these boards are for what little (by today's standards) they do.
That quarter sound, not a "silly thing" man. I completely agree, it completes the experience.
I remember Ross from Accursed Farm got a coin from Carnevil 3D printed for him, so maybe something like that could work for your customs tokens.
At first it seemed like some of those changes would have been rather difficult and technical but found it so satisfying, seeing how simple each change was and how so many little touches like that really made a huge impact.
Hearing how excited LGR was when he made his custom coin release labels was so charming.
10:17 When I did something like this, I printed it out on overhead acetate, and printed it more than once. so they could be stacked on top of each other. This makes the black more opaque and because it's printed on transparent acetate, lets more light through where there's no print.
I didn't know it had airplanes.

Very nice little original details there. Love the idea of putting a ton of coins in the coin tray for the "correct" money drop sound! A lot of work obviously went into this. Glad it payed off!

I've been rebuilding my empty Smash TV converted to a Killer Instinct 2 cabinet, sadly the cabinet was damaged and I got it from a local shop friend in town, into a MAME/JAMMA cabinet. It never had coin-op mech included, but I found someone with a midway coin-op mech and I was super excited, I also had to do some repairs to the entire assembly. But it was so satisfying after getting it to work and got the bucket installed. Nothing is even more satisfying than having a full-ish bucket as you mentioned for that metal coin action!

They may be small upgrades, but boy are they satisfying to watch. As soon as you mentioned replacing the coin return labels, I knew the LGR logo was coming in! I love that reference/test chart on the back panel. Seeing it lined up perfectly through the electronics when you reinstalled it was my favorite part. I also gained some insight on how to play Missile Command. I had it on my 2600 but I had no idea how to play it as a kid and haven’t thought about it since. Now I wanna give it another shot!

I felt nerdy and financially imprudent for buying my OSSC and automatic SCART switcher, but that's nothing compared to dropping $200 IN QUARTERS on an authentic quarter-insertion sound. That is next level.

The arcade I work at does a ton of coin door/mech restoration amd it's an ongoing battle.
If I had to guess as to what caused the damage to the coin mechs to begin with, I'd say employees who removed the coin tray too aggressively probably slammed the mech structures a few times.
Older arcade coin trays are already a hassle to remove(especially when they're full), and if you're tired or in a hurry it's a little too easy to accidentally hit the coin mech structure when pulling the tray out.
I'm happy to see this classic arcade getting some love!

I'm sure it's been mentioned but hitting the Coin buttons (or any plastic you want to be shiny) with some rubbing compound will buff out most of the very fine scratches and really make them shine. If you wanted to go even further with some soap, water, and 2000-3000 grit sandpaper available at any auto parts store you can lightly sand out all the imperfections then use the rubbing compound to polish it to a glass like finish. I've done this on many vintage parts and it really makes them look better than new, plus it keeps the original parts which is always nice.
Tokens can be bought relatively cheap (for the amount you get) .. you'd need to replace the plastic part of the mech's tho. they have to match the tokens. (experience from my Asteroids deluxe )
i did get a little lucky on my end i got my token mech's from a chucky cheese that was going outa business so i got a bucket of tokens to go with it. kept my quarter mech's to tho.
Watched you on The Friendship Onion yesterday and it led me to finding your RUclips channel. I recently acquired two vintage cocktail arcades: dedicated Mrs. Pacman and Space Invaders Deluxe. Both are in fantastic condition. It almost looks like the Space Invaders was barely used.
The game that gave me a headache after round 100, havent played it since that saturday in 87.

Yep, it's a 40-year-old arcade game used by the public and "maintained" by countless random people over the decades. These things get beat up, it's a fact of life!
@@LGR There are replacement harness connectors and female pcbs you can buy, I would honestly advise replacing the harness connector and soldering the edge connectors of the board to a new PCB, it should help frevent future damage to the board
