I've been coming back to this tutorial for years after I took a workshop of yours at the 1st and only Adobe Effects summit in Seattle 9 years ago. I think they just call it Adobe Max now. Hope you have been well!
This is a nice tip, I like how streamlined it is. I was wondering if you have or would be willing to make a tutorial on an equally streamlined technique to make the green screen footage match the general color scheme of the environment.
Thank you, this is a very efficient way to do it. I have to do a project with a lot of green screen, so this combined with the true comp duplicatoe script will save me time and headaches
This is going to be extremely useful when I do green screening!! It will help create even more separation with the background! Awesome tutorial *****! :D
Thank you Mickey! Great tutorial! Came in very handy for a project I'm doing right now. Was kind of scared of lightwrapping without a plugin but your easy way is really....yeah EASY!
great video! got a question tho... the light wrap works perfectly but when i add on top of the lightwrapped subject for examp. a fog plane, the lightwrapped subject has this dark outline around... any ideas on how to fix this?
I know this is an old video but I can't get this to work? The earliest issue is when I set the first Matte a sillohuette does not appear? Any help would be great, the footage is pre-composed but maybe I did that wrong?
You got to have the layer into a precomp, and the keying done it inside that precomp. But I've got an easy solution for you: Now AE have Light Wrap (Effects > Key Correct > Light Warp) and does all of this with only apllying this effect to the subject layer.
@@ERey55 I have similar issue now that im using newest after effect to use this trchnique (used to be worked before) and there is no light wrap effect on the list too... is there any solutions?
Hi Mikey, great tutorial but I'm having a problem even though I've followed your instructions to the letter. When I add the set matte effect for the first time and check the alpha channel, something weird is happening. It vertically stretches the alpha channel from the below precomposed GreenScreen. I went into Green Screen and turned settings on and off to see if this made a difference but no change. The resulting effect at the end of the whole process is a light wrap that is stretched vertically and does not fit the actual person. Any ideas?
NLE_Ninja Effects Make sure the foreground and background are the same resolution, and you'll probably need to nest the foreground. but it should work.
Hey Mikey, Having a little issue with this one. My comps are exactly the same and I can not see the alpha channel matte like you do when I set the Take Matte From Layer to the one I am using as the key. When I invert it I can see the key. I only have the three layers- the background, the green screen layer ( which is a comp) and the duplicate of the background on top. I am working with CC 2015 on a PC running Windows 7. Thanks
I know I'm late to the party, but here's a likely solution. When pre-comping your green screen footage, be sure to select "move all attributes into the new composition" or else you won't end up with an alpha from the pre-comp.
I've had the issue that it hasn't quite got the right outline with the set matte so the effect have un affected part stick out (hair flicks) how can i fix that?
Hi Mikey, I'm following along just fine until I get to inverting the upper Set Matte. Then the full (matted) foreground appears. Wonder where I went wrong. AE version 13.2.0.49, running on Yosemite 10.10.2 on a Mac Pro (early 2008) Thanks for all your efforts. Bill Taylor
I'm trying to incorporate this effect into a project but when I try to apply the first set matte effect and select my video layers alpha channel I am not getting the result you are showing. I'm not seeing any result for that matter. I was wondering if there is a step that I am missing. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks!
***** It is literally called "light wrap" in the key correct section. I was wondering if there is a drawback to using that compared to this cause if so I will start doing it this way.
***** ??? Which version of AE are you in? I've checked CS6, CC and CC 2014 and there is no such effect. I'd love to tell you what the differences are, but I really don't know anything about this effect. I've searched google all over for it.
Great tutorial, but when i create the light wrap it takes the wrap from the center of the image, but my on screen talent is standing off right, so she is not necessarily being wrapped by the exact background she is in front of, am i missing something or is this just the case, I see your talent is dead center.
Mark Donohoe the one "Gotcha" with this method, is both layers have to be the exact same resolution and size, so you might have to precompose one to make them match.
I combined different layer sizes -- a square greenscreen layer, precomped into a 1080 frame, and a non-standard BG pic. Look at your Set Matte settings and make sure you uncheck "Stretch Matte to Fit" which seems to default to on.
Hi Mikey :) I would change this technique just a bit to add more flexibility. I would precomp the keyed footage using "leave all attributes" and not "move all attributes", and hit the collapse switch. if I need to change any transform of the background I would so the same. this technique demonstrated in this tutorial ruclips.net/video/Qqk7IAPqsQ0/видео.html

This trick is still gold after so long. Thanks a lot mate!
Bro. You just saved my life. Thank you!
I was using another method until I stumbled on this one. I prefer yours. Thanks for the tips!
This is great ! Super simple solution. Thanks for sharing !
Really good explanation. This wasn't hard to put into practice with my own assets.
If your BG needs to be scaled, Pre-Compose it and use the new comp.
Both the BG and the Green Screened image need to be the same size.
YO! This comment saved me 8 years later. Thank you so so much!
@@jonatantrudeauhazzard2732 Glad to hear it. And, as it turns out, a good refresher for some stuff I’m working on right now myself.

Thanks you so much for this tutorial! It was totally amazing and useful! I am so happy!
1:20 is when he actually starts to explain it
Thanks skipper!

First Tut (this one): Learned a really good tip.
I'm sold.
Thanks.
Glad to have you. Let me know if you have any questions. Just comment on any of my videos.
Thanks soooo mccchhhhh short quick and to the point love it.

Thank you so much! It's help me a lot ! I also add "glow" between Channel Blur and Set Matte 2. It could make it more vivid. Thank you~

Thanks! Have used this a couple of times already.
Thanks actually a great simple tutorial! fantastic stuff
Amazing Tutorial!!!
I was searching for a Light Wrap Plugin for free, but this way is so easy that I'll use it instead...
Keep up the good work!
Great tutorial. May I ask what was the purpose of duplicating the Set Matte at 2:27?
Never mind. I just noticed the difference it makes, subtle but good!
Nice technique bro
Really helpful tutorial! Thanks!
Nice and simple, I like it!
Very helpful. Thanks so much for the tutorial. I'm looking forward to trying this.
Awesome!
great tutorial but when applying the set Matt and then blurring it, the Matt doesn't line up with the green screen image. Thoughts please?
Really nice Mikey. You just blew the heads off of at least 3 of my compositors. LOL! :)
I hope they're alright
***** LOL #2. :)
That's a cool trick.
Thank you for your tutorial. It was really helpfull!

Thanks brother!!
thanks man YOU ARE AWESOME
Great tutorial!! Thanks.
Awesome! And to go further, use masking/feathering to specific areas, for more control, for example how much affects hair!
Welldone!!!!
Still applicable in 2022. Thank you!
Thanks man!!

How did I missed that video?

make sure that both comps are the same size dimension wise.
***** Thanks Mikey. Yes my background was scaled up. After pre-comping it, and having both layers at 100% scale, I had no problems. Thanks matey.
Great tutorial! Thank you oh so much good sir.
Very cool
Cool tip. You're right. Everyone usually requires to do a lot of comps to achieve this or use a 3rd party plugin.
Don't thank me, thank the Set Matte effect :)
I will. I might try to see if this translates into Premiere since it has the Set Matte effect as well
NLE_Ninja Effects Make sure the foreground and background are the same resolution, and you'll probably need to nest the foreground. but it should work.

excellent

Wow that's useful ! Thanks.
Will this work if i'm using a background not from an image instead from a recorded movie clip?
Many Thanks
Thanks Mikey, tutorial was a great help. Definitely gonna take a look at your channel to check out how you can help my video work.
Thank you
I've had the issue that it hasn't quite got the right outline with the set matte so the effect have un affected part stick out (hair flicks) how can i fix that?
Nice job, but if I move the body? the mask doesn't follow the precomposition (green_screen)

Try pre composing the layer that has the green screen on it. make sure you move all attributes.
Thank you, helps...

UnrealStudiosInHD I'm not to blame for idiots like hitler or for that we have won the world Cup :P
I really wish this worked on my computer...
Whoever gave this video a thumbs down deserves to get eaten by an army of ants!
I think I might have an anti-fan, it seems that every time i release a video in the first 20 minutes I get a thumbs down, then none after that.
What is wrong with just using the light wrap effect?
Which effect are you talking about?
***** It is literally called "light wrap" in the key correct section. I was wondering if there is a drawback to using that compared to this cause if so I will start doing it this way.

That's weird :/ I'm using cs6
Oh wait my bad man. It is a plugin by Red Giant I forgot because usually my Red Giant plugins are in a red giant drop down box but this one isnt

I like the visual effect tips. It's weird, I "should" know the motion graphics tips, but I "want" to know the VFX tips.
Also, what's up with your cursor?
iceycat25 Yeah, i'm not really sure, it screwed up somehow in the screen capture.
reminds me of true detective title
I've got a tutorial for that as well 😀
Great!
