Amazing how time flies when you're having fun. In 1972 my husband and I built an addition to our home, I was 30 years old. He did all the hard/heavy work so I got to do all the taping, except the ceiling, I'm short. You brought back so many memories of a home long sold and a husband now gone 8 years. Enjoy and in 50 years you'll smile at the memories too.

Jeremy- go to a 6" knife for your taping pass. Mud goes on quicker and only one pass to smooth out as you embed the tape to remove the excess. Use a corner trowel for those inside corners.

Yep you’re right that 4 inch knife makes it harder. You’re right the 6 inch and even slightly wider makes the pass smoother and level without having to go back so much.
      Great advice 👍

Absolutely agree! Also, you might find the mesh-type tape easier to work with. I think it’s a bit more forgiving. Another tip: you can get pre-made pieces for where corners and ceilings join, which make doing them so much easier! Invest in some for the next parts of the house.

Completely agree, I saved my sanity when the gal at Home Depot took the 4" scraper from my cart and put in the 6". I will always use the larger scraper for a smoother finish.

It's looking good! Are you using a 4" trowel, try a 6" for the first coat, and switch too a 10 or 12" trowel for the topping coats. The thinning also helps with wrist fatigue. Tapping is actually relaxing and more rewarding. So keep knocking them out of the park. Also congrats on the newest little member. Take care and be safe and God bless amen.

The GREAT thing about mudding is that you can patch and sand, patch and sand until you are happy with the finished result. Paint will show your oopsies so keep extra mud and paint just in case those little spots you don't like drive you crazy. I like to think of them as the areas that proudly say 'I did that' !! 👍

I have been learning so much since watching the two of you working together on your home. My parents built their 5 bedroom house and they used plaster instead of dry wall; I can only imagine what they went through in the 40's. My mother and father were both working daily on their regular jobs and my Mom was having children during this time as well. I don't know how they did it. I have really enjoyed watching the two of you building your home and watching your children and farm. Thanks for sharing your dream with us.

A 12 in wide tool for pulling off the excess will really help leave a nice clean joint that will be easier to hide later. Also, you will need to go over the seams twice to hide them well.

In 2000 I turned 58 & found myself drawing unemployment first time after working in the tool & die industry all my life. I had worked on DIY construction projects from high school on but never around real professionals. That summer I helped a professional remove the popcorn ceilings in several of my church's classrooms & skin coated them. On the third day, I bought my own stainless steel mud pan & 6 & 12" stainless steel "MARSHALLTOWN TROWEL" taping knives. HOMEDEPOT.I have not had sandpaper on a job in 15 years. Go thin & slow without ridges. The hollow spots can be filled the next day or two. So much less work & on clean up. I have even vacuumed the floors first & any dropped mud goes back in the pan. Have fun. I sure enjoy watching both of you working. God bless.

If he had a power sander hooked up to a shop back in order to get the plaster smooth he must’ve had way too much plaster or should I say joint compound. Although I know I am no master plasterer to mud and tape drywall is pretty easy and if you do it right smooth it out with the trowel proper you should have very little sanding to do.

    • @trippinonamystery5814

    • @eugeneharris6898
      @eugeneharris6898 2 года назад +1

I hate using a sander on joint compound so keep it smooth as possible when applying then use a sponge and water to knock down small ridges. Run your taping knife over after the sponge and you end up with the smoothest joints you ever seen. Remember if you hit the paper with the sander it will put small tears in the paper and will show if your going for smooth finish. Also the sponge will move the compound into small divits so that's always a plus.

    • @duanemiller5606

@@eugeneharris6898 for just mudding and taping joints I use dry wall screens. I have two different tools to use them with. One is just a stick with a swivel head you attach the screens to and the other is a tube you can attach to a vacuum.

Oh my goodness your talk on taking on a new challenge whoa!!!! To hear this, this week is so incredibly uplifting. Long story short. I was working a job and all the rest and I had a sever reaction to a statin med. I lost my ability to feel sensations and had 4 surgeries on my feet and lost my ability to walk. About the time I was released to start aquatic physical therapy the pandemic hit. I finally started the end of this January. I was in a wheelchair and scared of falling and being around people again but I went and am now using a walker. I was discharged from one on one therapy and started group therapy in the pool. All the fear came back like a vengeance and I’m now in my second week. I’m doing things I did as a teenager. Walking on my hands, doing flips and power walking in the deep end. I’m starting to speak to other ppl in the pool and feeling at home. My goal is to be walking without the walker by the end of summer with a cane. Challenges can be fun even though In the beginning they scare us too pieces. 🥰

My dad always says he knows i can do it, and my brother reminds me of all the projects ive done myself. Ive fenced my 1/2 acre property, built a new retaining wall of3x5ft lego bricks 6ft high, built a 67ft Trex deck on back of my house, a shed, and a base for my hottub. Each one of these projects had many tears, boat loads of self doubt, self abuse of what did i think i was doing. At the end of the day, each one of the projects got done.!!! Great job guys. Love your videos. There are three trowels I recommend. One is for inside corners and one for outside corners. They work wonders and make the job so much easier. The last one is a trowel that’s about 6-8 inches wide. It gives you a much flatter seam since it goes beyond the tape to flatten it out nicely. Good luck.

Take it from someone who has been there with regard to mudding drywall. My late husband and I gutted and reworked our entire basement. It was hard work but we learned a lot! Try using wider trowels (6" and 10"). You use the smaller one on the first coat and the wider one on the second coat. You'll find that it will go on faster and more evenly. You also might also want to switch to a corner trowel to mud the corners. You guys amaze me! You should be proud of everything you've done. And, congratulations on the latest animal addition to the homestead! **I apologize if someone has already made these recommendations. I haven't read all the posts yet.**

Years ago I helped a friend build an addition on his house. We started to do the drywall finishing our selves but he decided to hire an old professional. What I learned was that he used a wide knife and the seams got finished with about a foot of compound on each side. By the time he finished there was barely any wallboard that wasn't covered with compound. The other thing I learned from him was to use a sponge mop as a fast way to sand and keep the dust down. It nicely smoothed everything out ready for primer. I really enjoy your videos.

I've seen good and terrible finishing. You were right to take on the challenge! My only advice is to sand and sand and sand some more, shine a light up the wall making sure there are no heavy edges on anything before putting one drop of paint on the wall. It's all in the prep work for the finish look to be perfect! Can't wait to see it all done. :)

Having a drywall business for many years I know how hard it is is properly put on mud and tape. The proof will actually be when you put the paint on the walls, that's when light will catch the flaws, but if you're going with a heavy texture, it should be ok. I give you both all the credit in the world for doing your own drywall finishing. Its not because it hard to do its pretty simple but I think its an art form that some people have and some don't. I do not and hate to do anything with mud and tape. Its looking better and better everyday. Pretty soon you'll be waking up in bed looking up at that ceiling you guys built, insulated, drywalled, and finished.

Nice! Seeing sheetrock up, with tape and mud going on means you're in the final phase of building! It won't be long and you'll be moving in! Then a house becomes a home! We break ground in Sagle for ours as soon as the frost restrictions come off the roads!

Melissa, more excellent words of wisdom. When I was 16 years old my parents decided we would build our own home. We tore down a house in the city that had to be moved or destroyed to make way for a shopping centre, transported all the lumber including hardwood flooring (after removing all the nails by hand) 40 miles away to where we had a cottage on a lake. We converted the cottage to a detached garage and built a 3 bedroom, 1 1/2 bath bungalow. We built all the trusses, the wall assemblies, the plumbing, the electrical, installed all the drywall, did the mudding and taping and sanding and painting, We sheathed the roof with 1" hemlock boards and installed the shingles. The only thing we contracted out was the digging of the foundation for a full height basement and the installation of the concrete block walls. It was the best experience of my life. If I was physically able, I would do it again in a heartbeat. By the way, congrats on the new member of the sheep family.

I found that a wider knife used to push the tape into the mud gives a smoother finish so that I had less sanding. I forget if it was a 11"or a 14" knife. For ceilings, I built a small bench that I could stand on and reach the ceiling. It was basically a 5' long 2" x 12" x 5' with 12" legs. It made the work a lot faster and easier. 2" x 12" boards on milk crates can work too. Good Luck, Rick

So happy for you guys, taking one day at a time does it for sure. Word of caution, please make sure to use glasses when handling the drywall mud. It will irritate your eyes for days if even a tiny droplet gets in (speaking from experience).

Few quick tips on drywall mudding. I won't elaborate to substantiate what I am saying.
Use the dark green lid quality, dense mud.
It is easier to put on than it is to sand off. So put on a thin coat. Don't worry about shrinkage. Think a lot of thin coats, rather than a thick one.
In between coats after it is cured, take a wide putty knife and go over the mudded areas to shave off any nubs. A little nub can turn into a hill when you put on a subsequent coat. In only a little bit of time you can scrape off all of the nubs. You can fly over these areas.
When you are done use "Cover Stain" primer which is oil based. You'll need to wear a mask and open some windows, and use a fan to vent, but the next day it is completely cured so much so that if you need to sand anything, you can sand it to a powder. It doesn't have any odor the following day.
Water based primers take two weeks to cure. If you try to sand it the next day it clogs the sandpaper real bad. You can't sand it in other words. Cover stain also gives you complete coverage with one coat, hence the name "Cover Stain". It gives you a even base to paint over making it possible to do a single coat with the paint. I went into Home Depot to get some Cover Stain, a gallon, and there were only two left on the shelf. I asked the Home Depot paint guy why they only had two on the shelf, and he replied, "The contractors come in here and buy it by the case.".
It looks like you are doing a nice job as usual. I like the way you guys do things. Love your channel. I'm hooked on it.

good job just remember less is more better off to do light skim coats , I did too many mistakes mudding putting too much on and had to sand too much. Keep up the good work. Its time consuming but you got this!

  • @MattyO-72
    @MattyO-72 2 года назад

Few tips: sand well before the last coat of mud, use 8" inch knife for that last pass, thin the last pass of mud with a bit more water, really feather the mud into the wall with long strokes of that 8" knife, then when dry use a big damp sponge and take your time blending the mud edge into the wall and removing the mud dust off the entire wall. Then you are ready for primer paint ! Finish this first room with primer before moving on to other rooms to ensure you have the result you want ... there is a learning curve to mud, tape, sand, sponge, primer. Take your time as that prep is key to great looking walls with your selected colors.

When it comes time to prime and paint, we always use First Coat. It's a thicker primer for fresh drywall! It hides a multitude😁
My FIL had a drywall business, and after 10 year of Active Army, we had one too. My hubbs could hang an entire house in a day after a helper assisted him to hang the ceiling!
He always hated finishing though...I hand it to you for tackling ALL of it🥰 Bless you!!!

Your mud is to wet. Your putty knife is to small for your first coat. Need at least a 4" blade for first coat. Them 6" and final coat 10" or 12" blade. Need corner bead around all your window and doors for a clean edge. Not trying to tell you what to do but I was a carpenter for many many years.

You can buy a rocket heater that runs off diesel and it holds quite a bit of fuel, it will warm up a good portion of the house fast.
We thought we did a good job on our sheet rock LOL, until that beautiful sun came through the windows and showed every little thing! Hopefully rent a sprayer and put it on heavy coat of texture to cover all the little uneven spots you"ll see later! It's amazing what shows up!
House is looking great! I cant wait until your pantry is done!

A couple of suggestions. Use the yellow mesh joint tape which has a light adhesive on one side. You can save a step this way. Apply it over the raw adjacent joints. Then add the joint compound which will squeeze into the mesh. Then get a 8” wide paddy knife to smear it out. It will give a wider joint and blend better when sanding is done. Good luck we love your show. Tom & Suzie.

6" blade for the initial taper joint (use a smaller blade to get the mud outta' the bucket), then progress through larger on each coat.
Someone mentioned the mud being too wet, and I agree.
Someone else mentioned a power sander (w/vacuum) when the time comes, and those things are da' bomb. In the end, it's all on you, so.........don't screw it up. LOL J/K, you're doing great. Mudding is fun once you get the hang of it.
