I love them too. They were definitely against the grain of the era where sexism was the norm. Women and minority groups certainly tended to get shitty deals in the record business, even in it's biggest years. But it's also true that in the tech/sound/lighting world, you'll find many women. So I think Kurt just didn't want to get it wrong. He's being as polite as he can be about something that's pissing him off.

It's produced what I call a "harmonic" or "overtone" thought. Meaning, sometimes when you combine notes into a chord, an "overtone" is produced that didn't originate from the notes or ingredients of the original idea.
While I have never fought in a war myself, I have a grandfather who spent two years on the pacific front lines in WWII. He was as "in the shit" as you could possibly be. I have heard and preserved most of his stories that are more horrific than any depiction I've seen or read. By a lot of luck and fortitude, he survived some very extreme odds. As a result, here I am typing these words nearly 80 years later. In a nutshell, my grandfather's perspective on the hell he went through would not align with the ideas of "For God and Country" we so often attach to bygone wars (especially WWII) as they become relegated to history so people like you and I can fetishize the behaviors. It was more "No god I prayed to would ever allow this, To hell with my country, to hell with the politicians, I'm fighting for the guys who I arrived here with." It's more in line with the idea of "a band" oddly.
Here's the overtone thought:
Do we owe "greatness" to stupidity? Let me see if I can break this down: In the US we're currently divided into several different perception camps but what seems to bind us is our lack of trust. We don't trust certain leaders. We don't trust our corporations and captains of industry. Even from the inside looking out, I'd argue a lot of us don't even view the US as the "Shining Beacon" we once did. We all know too much, even if what we "know" is a fabrication. A lot of us have learned history but we are repeating it anyway. Many today would say the world has "gone to shit." But I'd argue the shit was always there, there was once a tighter lid on it and the ideas people had about "how things were" were largely based on their isolated experiences -- which were much, much harder to publicize. What's changed is how we are able to communicate. I'd argue politicians were always crooked, industries were always greedy, depending on how you want to read between the lines, the US as a nation has likely inflicted more suffering than it has received before it was possible to show it in real time.
We owe a lot of our successes to the willingness of people to naively and stupidly believe in an idea, only to become firmly trapped inside the reality of it later. The lesson comes after the experience, not before. We've always relied on that naive step off of a landing craft, or into a recording contract as the justification for greatness. This country turned into a recourse based economy during WWII and did things almost unimaginable even 80 years later. Are we any less capable today with 80 years of progress to leverage from? (OR) Do you suppose what we are incapable of is naively agreeing to march in that direction? Does it work better when we know not what we do? (or) Does it work better when I can sit and listen to my grandfather's account of the hell he went through and how I grew up with him saying "I'll break both your legs before I'll let you join the army."
It always takes bravery to take a very public position on any idea that is unpopular. It may not be the bravery one exudes in a war but I'd argue it's a more educated decision to choose the former and more of an insanely stupid one to choose the latter. Neither decisions are right or wrong, they just are.
