  • Two years ago we got a call: "There is this island in the middle of the Pacific where whales are in their dozens, relaxed and respected. You can hear them blowing from your window!" Really? We did some online research, asked around, but were sceptical. Things very rarely end up the way you imagine them to be, especially in the ocean. But what if this time, they actually do?

I lived in the island 35 years ago and lived with and did free diving with Niueans. Even picked up,some of the language. At no time did anyone ever mention the whales. Have they always been there or have they been coming back over the past few decades? I saw many more of them in my homeland New Zealand, and zero in Niue. No one offered tours back then. There was almost zero scuba services and no one in the only thing vaguely resembling a dive shop mentioned them. The country was very raw and rugged. Very fond memories. Pretty shocked at the fees I just saw on line for the whale tours I just googled. Used to be you could buy some beers for a friend and they would take you out to catch tuna and wahoo on hand lines. Guess that’s “progress” 😅

This is new, since everything now is all starting to be commercialized. Good promotion though. Some locals watch whales from the shore like its not a big deal.

It truly is a fantastic spot - we were in Niue at the same time. The whales are amazing and to see them while you are having breakfast and hearing them at night was awesome.

I read that because of the exposed location, it tends to be difficult to go out and see the whales, because strong wind can make it difficult to get the boat on the water and ofc swells and other factors. Can you share your experience with the weather and the practicality of the trip please?

It's actually very rare that you can't get out on the water. It's one of the easiest places in the world to find whales. They're usually within 500m of the coast.
