I just love you. You bring back sweet memories of my Italian-American friends in NY whose family members really spoke like this. I can almost smell the GRAVY simmering, too. Thank you and God Bless!
That sounds delicisous....... We need a great little family Italian restaurant in our town, Big Time... Keep up the great vids, you maka my days!! Grazia Stevie B!!
I heard this from my mother's side of the family all the time. It sounded like marone, but was an Americanized version of Madonna, or Madonna mia. It is a common exclamation in Italy. "Aaay, Pops, can I ask you a question?" "How you gonna learn if you don't ask? Go ahead, Son." "Could I borrow the car?" "Madonna mia! Why do you ask such stupid questions?"
Yeah I always wondered why the Italian Americans say madone or marone. I know Italians in Germany they really say: Madonna!! And they say it like madonnnna!
Oh !! Stevie. Glad to see your video's again. I gotta say ... i enjoy them a lot . In return ? I also hope you and your friends and family have both a happy and cool Labor day weekend too or as what's left of it. Anyway Buona sera, Ciao.😉
Ohhh !!! Stevie Grazie mille for the word teachings. I'm a native born Bronx New Yorker living in the S.W region now and im also 61 and being away from the cultures back east that i for one love ? Many words have let's say slipped away To top that? Out here many of the locals here don't know what that means and aside from shows like the Sopranos they've never heard the word. As youse can imagine its not that common of word used out here cahpeesh ?? Anyway i love your channel it is primo . Anyway take care and again ? Thanks for the video's and a refresher.
I grew up in a kinda seedy part of 1950's/60's Brooklyn. Neighborhood was mostly Puerto Rican, Italian, Polish and all Catholics. I was a WASP. Ain't nobody got no accent no more?? I miss the lingo, thanks man.
Hey Stevie...I always thought it was MA-DONE with a D. And that was because my mother and gramom both said it was short for "Madonna", as in Mother of God.
Stevie - you're like our Uncle Poncho (DeFranco RIP). He wasn't that much older than us, but taught us cool Italian phrases to share a laugh in certain situations. Our parents never taught us Italian so they could talk around us without us understanding the adult/private nature of their conversations. But Uncle Ponch taught us cool words at the moment, like getting into a crowded car.......he's say we're going to be too "cu-pod". Keep it up.
I wish this man was an actor...I'd probably see anything he filmed. He'd be an awesomely entertaining interview on the talk shows. PEOPLE...I just got it, he should be doing commercials, OMG, talent agents wake up out there.
Growing up in an Italian family on my mothers side, and my great grandparents and grandmother coming over from Rome, and my grandfather (Nonnas husband) from Naples, all I ever heard was Madonne! Which meant Madonna as several here are saying. Also zuga for sauce, not sure of the spelling but we pronounced it Zoog. And it was sauce not gravy. And Uh di! for Oh Dios. Madonne! your welcome.
Someone commented, "Why does he have to repeat every story?" The first 'story' is in context, that is how you would use the word in a typical conversation. The second is explanatory, or an explanation in everyday english without the colloquialisms.
I'm German and Irish-- grew up with Italians.. I say "OH MARONE" all day, every day.. (a bit of "funguul" too).. I know the spelling is wrong but the feeling is 100%.. Side note- I use a lot of "Oy Vey" too-- so, it looks like everyone is welcome to my shit show...
I always thought that, so I wouldn't say it. I don't use it in that context. I like a good Korean "Ai-goo!" similar to marone...no translation, just gets the point across!
Chuck Celentano See, that's what I thought, too...that the word was pronounced with a D in the middle, not an R. But then again, I thought the word for escarole was ska-DOLE, so what the hell do I know?
It's still driving me crazy that I can't find a slang word my family ALWAYS used in conjunction with eating, especially sweets, ice cream, or desserts: it was pronounced cha-GAH-la. They'd always said that it meant something like "goes down easy" or "no bones". Example: the kids at the table bitched and moaned about having to finish their 'skadole and beans at dinner. After dinner, they're wolfing down their cake or ice cream, so Pop looks at them, rolls his eyes, and says, "Oh, sure, looka dem kids. Chagala, right?"
Stevie, i hope you are well. I was hoping you could help me out. Back in the day, my boyfriends' dad, from Italy used to say Marone, La mazaria! I cant find the translation. Do you know what this means? Grazie, amico ;) ..oh! & what about pizano?
I just stumbled onto Stevie b anunciating Italian American Lol managgia...my grandmother from Italy always said that! Lol But what is the correct spelling? Or is that correct? Lol
OMG! Stevie B! You bring back so many memories! I am not Italian, but was "adopted" by my friend's family. I heard a lot of these things at their house when I was a teenager. Thanks so much for the memories!
I always thought the guys in our Little Italy were saying "Mah-thone", which meant "Mother". So instead of saying "MF", it was easier on the ears in mixed company to say "Mother" or "Mah-thone". Either way, it worked! I love being Italian-American.
Madone is one of them Slangwords you also have to be carefull using id say.. use it in the wrong way and one is cursing from what i understood. Now im dutch so i dont know tooo much about that buut im learning.... buut using this word as a WOOOW seems to be okay then... Really nice because i somehow started using it after a client i pick up some plants is called Greenhouse Maron XD Kind Regards from the Netherlands (In NL Language: Groetjes uit Nederland) Bjorn
New York born and raised, and there are real people who talk like this. I find it amusing that the vast majority of the country thinks this is an exaggerated dialect found only in mafia movies. The generations who speak this way are on their way out though.
Stevie B Slang Where were you raised, Stevie? Bronx and Westchester here. Have you noticed people are now dropping vowels on inappropriate words? Shit like: "Yeah, lemme get a pepperoni slice and a Coca Cole!" Or: "Bro, my favorite actor is Robert Deneer!" Or: "Who's pitchin tonight, CC Sabath? Marone, we're gonna need at least 8 runs!"
Yes , I read that on google. But it is used in different scenarios. I HAVE heard it said a few times here i Philly.. One time when I was 20 years old I was with my best friend here Mark..... We were downtown Philadelphia in front of a Community College we attended. ....Mark went up to a small "Hot Dog" cart to get us a hot dogs. . ...MARK tried to put mustard on his hotdog. Squeeze and took the bottle... No mustard.... Then he squeezed aguan hard one more time and the mustard Shot out. ... and sprayed the hot dog vendors shoes. ....The hot dog vendor shook his head and rolled his eyes looking up and said .."Marone"... , I could not stop laughing, It looked like a scene from Laurel and Hardy.... :)
Joseph Iannuzzi, in his book "Joe Dogs, the life and crimes of a mobster" uses this word frequently. He uses it in an a number of different contexts, when a guy walks into a room with half his face hanging off or in response to the sauce maybe not tasting so good or when a pretty lady suddenly walks in front of his car while he is stopped at a traffic light. So I'm thinking the word may convey various shades of meaning depending upon the context and the inflection used.
ThatS not how my grandfather pronounced, and he didn’t come to the U.S. until his late teens. Marine means brown. The word you were looking for is “Madonn’ “ shortened form of Madonna Mia.
Italians are America's greatest import.

Hate to say it but Stevie B should have been in the Sopranos cast. On second thought he's too nice a guy.

I was born and raised in Jersey. I’m not Italian, but this guy looks and sounds like every single one of my friends’ dads growing up 😂

Hey Stevie...I always thought it was MA-DONE with a D. And that was because my mother and gramom both said it was short for "Madonna", as in Mother of God.
Yes my family definitely says it with the D. MADONNA MIA
It's just the way he's sliding the d, that's why it kinda sounds like an r, japs do it too

Dude broke my brain when he spoke white business man
Great video! Spelling question: Should it be "marone" with an "r" and not a "d"? Just wondering. My parents said "Marone" every day, it seemed.
Marrone is actually a bastardization of "Madonna", where one beseeches "The Madonna". Many tines my Mother would say "Madonna Mia"!
I always thought that, so I wouldn't say it. I don't use it in that context. I like a good Korean "Ai-goo!" similar to marone...no translation, just gets the point across!

Madonna in southern dialect
It means basically “holy (insert expletive here)”

It's really Madonna, like Madonna Mia. But marone is the way most slang-users pronounce it. One of my favorites.
