I'm an Illinois farmer, so maybe not relevant to your organization, but man oh man if you progress to mechanical termination, those roots will continue to pump fertility in to your ground year after year. We're a whole different ball game here, we're basically growing everything that can be grown, but the most important thing we grow are the livestock under the ground.
I'll admit, as we grow and acquire new ground, it's tough. But the ground we've been no till, cover crop, and farming to organic standards for 20 years farms itself and is in the top 10 for "bushels" in the area. I hate throwing out bushel talk, I'm not growing bushels, I could care less about yield. I'm paid for the tryptophan, lysine and other amino acids and micro nutrients. My big buyers aren't even producing "organic" product, just non GMO, but the performance of our feeds is so much better, it's cheaper to pay more.
I won't live to see my land get back to the 12% organic matter it had before man 1st put plow to it, but my kids will towards the end of their tenure..
