Common misconception, the original did alright in Japan. Nothing too special, but far from the flop people think it was. The reason for this dub is that the story is just so heavily built around Japanese culture that any localization available at the time couldn’t do it justice in a western setting.
Nah, this humour never went away, it’s just that it got corrupted and misunderstood by people who think like you, who claim that anything bigoted that comes out of their mouths was just a joke that went over the heads of supposedly ‘overly sensitive easily offended groups’ (which we all know is secret code for people being negatively affected by rhetoric being re-framed as merely edgy jokes as a cheap defence from criticism.)
The og show not doing very well is completely false thing that was made up though hopefully you don’t get people really mad in the comments at you saying that. Like legit there are some people that I come across that sound like they want to legit kill you when you say that 😂
I don't think there's a lot of people that actually know why it was dubbed this way because I've only ever seen the "it did terrible in japan" version so i doubt anyone is gonna come after him for not knowing.

Yeah, the Japanese version did fine, although there was a previous dub that flopped. The two probably got confused in the story-telling.
