This is the only time she sang this song in "Beast Mode" at barely 9 yo. Later versions were very toned down, probably to protect her developing vocal cords.
In this video she is 9 years old. You saw her hand the arrangement over in the beginning. The band lovingly nicknamed her the Boss.

I love this performance so much. As they say AJ don't play. Well perhaps this is what she does when she does play and we get the most stunning, amazing performance of a 9 yr old of this Jazz standard ever created. I believe it is going to go down in Jazz & Music history as the best ever for this age and in my opinion the best rendition of this song ever created Screamin Jay included. It will be revisited for Decades and will remain relevant for Generations to come. Anyone who discovers this performance for the first time today or a 100 years from today are going to be as amazed and astounded as everybody has been to this point.
Think of the children who will be inspired by this one performance in the decades to come. This is an Iconic performance and will always be Iconic. Angelina has on her own from early on at 6 or 7 yrs old reintroduced what I believe will be a whole new Jazz Era and redefined by this young phenom and prodigy. That is astounding! And she is just 16 years old... That is unfathomable!... Oh Lord... what is coming the world is not prepared for but we as fans have been on the edge of our seats and will remain there as we wait. No hurry. We want Angelina to do it her way when she is ready. She has already established her proficiency and incredible work ethic in this endeavor guided by an incredible family and professional support now surrounding her.
We know Angelina will continue to amaze! We will be here to experience and cherish it for as long as we live.... and I am praying for many more years for myself to enjoy it till the end of my days... I hope to go out of this world listening to the most beautiful voice ever created for man just as Angelina came into it to fulfill her purpose, what she was put on earth to do, sing for the whole World... and Me! Go back into her time machine & check out her performances on Norway Got Talent. All four of her songs. She did win. She entered at 7yrs & won by 8. There is a video of her in studio singing "I Who Have Nothing" at 6. I was gob-smacked when I saw these early performances.

Angelina was 9 years old in this performance - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the arrangement based on listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. Angelina is the definition of what a child prodigy is. Yes, she puts in a lot of work into her craft, but she is blessed with such an amazing talent. She's a unicorn, altogether mythical.
While this song was performed a year after she won Norway's Got Talent at age 8, jump ahead just a year later to see her continued evolution. At 10, Angelina performed "Feeling Good" before a live audience, broadcasted a Norwegian television channel. When I hear this song, I used to associate it with Michael Buble. Not any more. Her talent continues to grow exponentially.

Thank you for continuing your journey of discovering Angelina. She is well worth every moment you spend on her. I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on RUclips, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she con convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener.
Yes, Angelina was 9 years and 2 months old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956. She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original.
Things I found particularly worthy of note in this video are
(a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled.
(b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers.
(c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it.
(d) The smile on the face of the Bass player.
(e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine"
(f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand
(g) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody.
Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.
You are just witnessed what is considered to be the finest vocal recording ever by a 9-year-old! Great reaction and comments and I'm looking forward to your next video. I assume that as a reactor, gaining subscribers and boosting analytics are very important. Your reaction and praise for Angelina was welcomed, but I'd like to share some thoughts on what might help you attain your goals.

Absolutely amazing performance from 9 year old Angelina and the amazing thing is Angelina arranged this herself pay tribute to the original artist Screaming J Hawkins, Angelina is the boss and has been known to correct an orchestra, I’ve been following this amazingly beautiful talented artist for around 6 years now and this summer was fortunate enough to buy tickets for Angelina’s live concerts in Norway her home country, her stage presence was phenomenal her live vocal performances were absolutely amazing, Angelina is definitely one of the best vocalist around! This is the very first video or song I ever experienced of Angelina and i, like you had the same kind of reaction--just blown away. Everybody gets that same dumbfounded look when they hear this little nine-year-old pixie belting out that song like a 50s blues singer! And let's talk about her sense of timing! This is 6/8 time and she's perfectly on point. 68 time is difficult for many adults to stay on top of, especially with some of the freeform phrasing that she put in there! She truly is astounding!
Exactly! It's off the charts good. That was a break out moment in her development. She was always phenomenal, amazingly good with her voice control and clever vocal choices with such a jazzy tone. But this was on another level. Of course the pattern of the song was Screamin Jay Hawkins' version but still, she arranged it from a theatrical to a serious jazz version. That level of development continued into the next year, at 10, when she did the reverse cover of Baby Fuzz's "I'm Still Holing Out For You" where she was asked to demo his new song before he even recorded it. And many believe it took the top spot as her best one to that date. Like many jazz songs that address heartbreaking experiences, this one went from sadness, to heartbreak, to despair, signaled by the entry of the strings. Impossibly good for a 10 year old. Good collaboration between Baby Fuzz writing and Angelina's performance.

Yes, we know...you were expecting a Child's voice at age 9....not with Angelina! In fact, to hear her sing like a child, you'll have to go back to when she was one & a half years old...(although even then you'll find she sang IN KEY to Whitney Houston!). As you may have read, She Won Norway's Got Talent at age 8 (Auditioned at 7)...And she competed against seriously talented competitors!. This no mere Child Singer. Even the word "Prodigy" fails to encompass the vocal miracle that is Angelina Jordan! I recommend you go Further back and listen to the 4 songs in that Competition next to orient yourself!

The artist she based her performance on was Screaming Jay Hawkins, which Angelina show’s a picture of in the video before she starts singing. You can’t miss him, he’s the one with the bone in his nose. Listen to Screaming Jay and you can see and hear where her inspiration comes from. Angelina’s performance based on SJH’s is really quite amazing because she reimagined it and her interpretation was actually better! Also, Bami, there is a reason she is bare footed so rather than stating rather bluntly that you don’t care to see her toes, you ask why they did so. It’s a meaningful trademark of Angelina’s which at this point is quite well known.

Her Adele covers and her Lana Del Rey covers at least match the originals. She's 16 now, going on 17. Her recent cover of Elvis' Suspicious Minds is just as remarkable. Or her last original 7th Heaven.

First time watching your reaction - Good job, In order to understand, I would check out, if only for a minute, Screaming Jay's performance. She reinterpreted from that performance. When you take in to context, she did all of this (All of it) at age 9! You know you are witnessing something that has no name! What is something, at the end, her reaching up to her chin, and you can almost see in her eyes. How could I have done this better.

It appears she had a very different attitude than other kids when she was little. She trained for years and scoffed at suggestions to try a talent show, saying she's not good enough yet.
If you want an more sober reaction of how she despite her age is able to sing that mature. Listen to the vocal coach Julia Nilon and her explanation and also the risks she takes singing like that at her young not fulle matured voice. Even though she sound like she does she put´s herslef at risks belting that much. But Julia was of vourse wrong. Especially if you listen to "I´m still holding out to you"
I do have one observation!! Trying to hear what you are saying at the same time the video is playing is a challenge. You can turn the audio level down a little or speak a little louder would be my suggestion. Otherwise very nice.

You need a little work on your presentation. Professionals don't typically use profanity during a critique. You tried to talk while the video played, thus we couldn't hear you. As a reactor, what industry specialization do you bring to the table with your reaction? What technical aspects can you relate about said video? This list goes on and on, but it's up to you to study your chosen profession and do it right.
