Lol at the towel comment. Hubby and I both re-use the bath towels, mine maybe for two or three washes. Hubby sometimes longer. His 'hack' is to use the side of the towel with the tag for his "bits" and the opposite side for his face, lol.

When I was a kid we had one Christmas that we couldn't afford new decorations so my mom cut stars, bells and other shapes out of cardboard and we wrapped them with tin foil. She poked a hold in the top and threaded red yarn through the top and tied it. To this day we still have those ornaments and they go on the tree every year! We didn't know we were too broke, we just thought we were having a fun activity.

I would say with the lights, look into your bulbs! Its cheaper to switch to LED instead of using haolgens. My partner is a sparky (electrician) and he is like "do you know how cheap these are?" when i complain about the lights haha.
If you leave things plugged in, they will draw power (like when your tv is turned "off" but it still has a little light in the corner, this means its on standby), the little light draws power, but compared to like, an old fridge, its really negligible.
Also keep in mind being frugal and being cheap are not the same thing at all. Sometimes cheap things cost more long term due to needing constant replacement, or being bad for you (from unhealthy food to things like bad shoes with dont help your knees and back).

Hey Cullen and Katie. Sitting here watching another video in your debt disaster journey. You are doing an awesome job and continue to inspire me. Coincidentally I began following you in early 2015 when I was out of work for 5 months due to layoff. I was already struggling to keep my house after my divorce and being left with a $3300 monthly mortgage, raising 2 children. I ran up 18k in credit card debt to stay afloat. Literally paying my light bill with my Discover card. First of all, during that time in my life, your videos brought me so much light during those scary times. After finally landing a great job, I consolidated all of my credit card debt with a debt management company for a $30/mo administration fee. They negotiated with my creditors and got them to agree to much lower interest rate AND stop all of my late fees. It took 36 monthly payments to get debt free and to modify my mortgage loan and I made it through!! I was able to take my family to PCB last Spring for a week, paid in cash. First family vacation together since they were very young. Well, now we are in 2020, my house is too big for just my 21 yo son and I and is a money pit. My daughter has flown the nest and my 7 yo fur baby died suddenly. I am putting my house on the market and downsizing from a 5 bedroom ranch to a 2 bedroom townhouse. It seems that my financial picture ebbs and flows. During the past year after throwing $$ into expensive car repairs I had to look for places to cut $$ from. I was able to cut my weekly grocery bill from $225 to $100 by shopping at Aldi’s. Not sure if you have one in Alabama. It’s owned by same company who runs Trader Joe’s. Aldi’s has “ knock off cereal” and we literally can not taste difference. Aldi is bringing in more Organic goods at very reasonable prices.
Wow, i just had to get that ALL out there!! So know your fans support you and are routing for you to succeed!! And thank you from the bottom of my heart for always keeping it real and making your fans feel safe to share our stories. Love you guys!!!

I love these vlogs! I am hearing you use a lot of judgment words toward yourselves, “I should do..., I shouldn’t do..., I am so bad about...” I would just like to encourage you to think about these statements. I don’t know your situation and I can only imagine how stressful it is, and currently it “is what it is” and you are doing what you can to improve it. I think being mindful of your present and what currently is, may be helpful for you to be more encouraging toward yourselves, because you really are doing some very hard work and you can be proud of it! Keep up the good work you guys!

I took my entire living room electronic equipment (tv, WiiU, switch, router, cable modem, cable converter box) on a power strip with a timer. It goes off at 11:30 pm and turns on at 5:00 am. This alone cut $50/ mo off my electric bill. I need to go around the rest of the house and add them to the rest of our electronics. There’s a meter you can buy call Kil-A-Watt it’s shocking how much is being used.

One month I decided to test this "Phantom energy". I put power strips on all major electronics and appliances, etc and turned them on when I used them. We turned our AC off and kept only our ceiling fans on. Our electric bill was almost cut in half. $400 to $240ish. Yea!! My husband was impressed but not enough to continue. Lol.

When I worked at McDonald's, I had a lady who bought a 10-PC nugget combo and a double cheeseburger. She gave the older child 6 nuggets and some of the fries, the younger one got 4 nuggets and some fries and she got the drink, the cheeseburger and the rest of the fries. The kids got drink boxes from home and they didn't end up with crappy happy meal toy clutter.

On the towel topic: I use mine probably about 6-7 times before it goes in the wash.
On the PJ topic: I wear one pair a week, and then Friday morning they go in the wash. That's just how my mom (who has 4 daughters - though we're all older now) did it so I just continued that on!

Katie & Cullen - I’m not sure how I even stumbled upon you guys a couple of weeks ago, but PLEASE keep making these videos! I’ve gone back and watched almost all the videos in the playlist, as well as a few more, and I’m moving on to Katie’s podcast next. It’s so nice to see someone get real about issues that cause over-spending/crazy decisions in otherwise rational people! Things happen in life that can just turn everything upside down, and it’s like you don’t even care what you’re doing at the time - you’ll deal with it later (then it’s almost like coming out of a fog). Well, later is here for me too and it’s so nice to know I’m not alone! ❤️

Gosh I love you guys! My husband and I are right there with you guys in the same season of life with school debt, doctor debt, dentist debt, stupid spending debt... I love listening to these videos of yours through this journey of getting our heads back above the water. I know the Lord is all a part of this and throws these trials in our paths so we can get our minds back to being humble and focused on him. Praying for you in this season. I’m listening to you while I’m cleaning up my kids lunch and something I do is buy a disinfectant cleaner that is meant to be mixed with water (I use pine sol) and put it in a empty spray bottle with water. I get so many more uses out of the cleaner when I can mix it with water and make my own solution.

As military family have to move with young kids. I found a game plan when it come to eating at restaurants I would ask for one adult drink for the kids and ask for a little to go cups for them and order one adult meal with extra plates and then or another adult meal for my husband to and a drink for us to share. And I will eat whatever nobody else wants cause you to get to side so one of the sides for me in the other side for kids. It’s usually cheaper to split an adult meal than buying individual kids meals

I'm one of those moms who is constantly telling my children to turn the lights off or bathroom fan off. I'm also constantly telling them to close the door so they don't let the "bought" air out.

I just wanted to say thank you for these videos - it was hard for me to watch originally because I’ve felt buried in debt and have tried to ignore it - but since your videos I’ve faced the facts and Dave Ramsey might not like this, but we have decided to refinance our house, which is a pretty modest price/size house, but we can pay all of our debt with that, and save so much per month paying on a debt snowball and be able to stay under our means, and SAVE so we don’t have to finance purchases in the future! For us, it’s incredibly life changing and wouldn’t have happened without y’all :)

Another awesome video!! Love hearing how others live frugally. I try to minimize power use. Lights are off when your not in the room. Towels used for sometimes a week at most. Depending on summer or winter. My daughter is a new towel every shower!! If she did the laundry more often, she would maybe change that habit! Lol. I clean homes... so big paper towel person. I am using less at home. But things need to sparkle at customers homes. And I started minimalism last May. Love love love The Minimal Mom. Great ideas... supportive family that all get involved. They have a strong faith and make you feel inspired to achieve your minimalism goals. You guys are doing so well. Continue on this path and keep a positive mind set. ❤️

We use towels several times before washing. I don't wash my clothes after every wash because generally I am sitting at a desk working, not a lot of sweat and dirt there. And laundry is work. I would definitely clear out your kitchen, if your drawers and cabinets have space it will be a good impression on home buyers. Everything you own has a price of maintenance. Fun video and I am enjoying this trend of debt freedom and minimal frugal living.

Omg the library!!! When my kids were little (preschool to 5th grade) and we were on a major budget, we were at the library all the time! Our library has so many great FREE activities all the time!!! I miss those days! We would be there 2-3 times a week in the summer! They had a summer reading club that had a special invite only party at the end of the summer if you read a certain number of books and got it signed off on. My kids LOVED that because it made them feel special to get to go to it and it got them interested in books of all kinds! And for movies, our Cinemark movie theater has a summer movie club and the movies are once a week for $.50 each or you can buy the pass for the whole summer (just a few dollars). They were older movies but my kids didn’t care! Most of them were movies we had not seen anyway. I would pack popcorn and juice boxes from home.

Towels in our house are changed when we remember lol. I actually have two at a time, one for my face, neck and hair, and one for my body. I'm super frugal, mindful actually, as I am so aware of the mounds of trash we expect poor mother earth to recycle for us. And the resources it takes to get the stuff we humans use just once! So not only are you helping yourself, you're helping the planet. Frugal rocks!

Same page on so many of these!!
We are lights people too, I hate it being dark inside, my son goes to peoples houses and turns the lights on or says we need to turn the lights on in here lol. We very rarely get our 3.5 yr old food but at McDonald’s I get apple slices and yogurt no fries, like you said he can have some of mine...but the yogurt I save for snack at a later time. Same on the towel, I grew up in a one time use house but my husband reused so like you said I’m the person washing all this dang laundry I’m reusing that thing lol
Love your channel and these videos have seriously changed our lives. My husband and I have completely changed our mindset on our finances, lifestyle and spending. We’re getting ready to pay off over $20k of debt.

Unplugging everything, turning my heat/air down when not home or going to bed - all helps!

We are one of those families that keep all the lights off all the time. We bought some led night lights that come on automatically and it is just enough to walk through the house without needing to turn the lights on. They are pretty cheap at Walmart. We have them in our bathrooms as well, then when you have to get up in the middle of the night you can still see. Towels- we use the same towel at least twice, sometimes 3 times. We started out hanging them on hooks to dry so we were not putting wet towels in the dirty laundry basket, then we decided to start using them multiple times to save on laundry.

  • @33snowgal

I grew up in a ‘use a towel once’ family- and I would use one for my hair and one for my body. And then I started doing laundry for my family of 6. We now have towel racks to use them multiple times. I cap at twice but my husband will then use mine lol.

A lot of what you’re talking about I grew up doing. When you talked about the free movie and Bringing your own food, that’s what my family always did. My mom planned so such fun treats and asked ahead sometimes what we’d like and help prep the food. I never looked around as a kid and was jealous that everyone else bought food at events. It’s so great to be doing this with your kids so young so that they grow up with these great skills and views to better set them up when they are older!

My parents have the same change jar!! My parents will roll the coins ever once in a while and buy the other a gift. Like my dad got my mom an ipod a few years back and most recently my mom bought my dad AirPods. Another way to save on electricity, (in the long run) that most people don't think about, is to schedule a dryer vent cleaning. I was noticing that my clothes were taking 2 full cycles to dry. So about an hour and half or an hour 45 minutes for a big full load of laundry. We paid $100 and had our dry vent professionally cleaned (the guy said it was FULL), and now I can dry the same sized load in about 45 minutes. It's crazy how much of a difference it made! AND, it minimizes the likelihood of a fire in your home. Win-win!

Speaking of coupons- recently my daughter and I had a 3am trip to the er resulting in Ear infection for her and sinus infection for me. We went to fill our prescriptions to have one of hers come to $89 😳 I remembered a commercial about goodrx and thought it was worth it to try. I’m so glad I did it took that $89 prescription down to $35!
We only turn on lights in the room we are on. We also only leave a small table lamp on when we leave the house in the evening. I don’t keep my flood light / outdoor lights on all night. I keep my ac set to 75 during the summer and I keep my heat set to 65 during the winter. (I live in South Texas for reference of summer humid heat). You just dress accordingly. We do have ceiling fans in bedrooms which we run to circulate the air during the evening. I work from home so you just adjust. I open windows when the outdoor temp is close to what I set the indoor for and let the cross breeze cool/heat the house. I keep the curtains/blinds open to let natural light in instead of turning on house lights.

These vlogs have been interesting! Some suggestions for other debt series vlogs: day in a life, budget meal prep for the week, clothing versatility (combining clothes and accessories to dress them up or down).
My suggestion for budget vlogs and “how much we put towards our snowball” type things would to be very clear (if you can/are comfortable) about all the values owed (put on poster board, dry erase board, overlay in editing etc.) this way even first time watchers know what is going on. I guess I’m more of a visual person and like to see the numbers owed and paid etc. it makes more sense when you are walking through your monthly budgets and remaining debt amounts etc. I think it will also help viewers to keep interest and their investment towards this journey when such things are detailed and not rough values/ vague. I understand some things just don’t make sense to share but thought I would pass on the advice. Anything to help you guys retain and gain viewers through this process. Real people doing real people things. This is a very relatable issue and a relief to see real content vs scripted stuff common on lots of other channels :) good luck!

I have a long terry cloth robe that hangs in the bathroom. I don't use towels - after a shower I just put the long terry cloth robe on and it absorbs the water. I dry my feet with the bottom of the robe. Sometimes I use that extra couple of minutes and lie down on the bed and enjoy the relaxed feeling. I used that for several years and just recently found a new one at the thrift store. It was 1/2 off day and cost me $5.00. It looked new and was similar to the one that I paid $69.00 for. In fact, I never shopped at thrift stores - I always thought that was beneath me. But, I have learned that you can find some real bargains there on new or look new items.
I had a friend that makes her own Toilet tissue. She cut up material into toilet paper sizes and uses them as TP. She washes them until they don't look good anymore. I use to think that was gross, but if you think about it - you wash your underwear and use them again. I am pretty stocked with TP, but may consider that if my finances become really in dire need.
I could go on & on but I am probably grossing you out about now!

Y’all are hilarious!!! We def use our towels for a week before they get washed. I’m teaching my kids and husband to use a hand towel and stop messing around with the paper towels. But all those tips are very helpful and I’m totally with Katie on saving small scraps of food. I will make anything with eggs taste delicious 😋 haha and I’m the only one whom likes left overs in our house so I don’t mind it much. Best of luck and have a good restful weekend. ❤️🙏🏼

I love having cash for saving change. We even save all of our $1 bills. I do use our debit card as well for things like gas, etc. and when I do, I will go in and round the amount down and transfer that money to a specific thing we're saving toward. It adds up pretty quickly!

There are 5 of us in our family. We have a area that is reachable with 5 plates, 5 cups, 5 bowls, 5 forks, spoons, knives, etc. We do have more dishes but keep them out of reach. It keeps us from filling the sink with dirty dishes.

I have always used the same towel for up to a week as well! My husband came from the same thought too! I do have a separate hair towel that I use to dry my face and then wrap up my wet hair. But both my hair/face towel AND body towel are good for a week!

When I was young my parents would make us spend one afternoon looking at the timeshare stuff at the beach so that we would get a $100 food gift card. We knew going into it we weren’t getting a timeshare and made it a goal to get in and out of the showing as fast as possible

We use our towels for a week before washing. You should look into making your own elderberry syrup in the Instant Pot. It is so easy and you can get a bag of elderberries on Amazon for $23 and it will make at least 4 quarts of syrup. The store bought is $23 and is 90% sugar. I make and sell my syrup and it usually pays for our use. :)

I was like Katie. I always was raised cleaning towels after each time, but once I was married I was converted. Most everyone I dated would also reuse the same towel. I will only use the same towel for half of the week. Can’t really go a full week yet.

Love your videos😎 thanks for letting us be a part of your journey. I don't know if this is an european vs us thing, but most of the things you mentioned are so normal for me. I grew up in Europe and I still hear my mom say ' don't use the paper towels. They're expensive ' or 'Switch off the TV completely when you go to bed'. I have been told there's a difference between the US and Europe in ways of living ecofriendly and spending habits. I've never been to the US. So I can't judge. 🤷‍♀️
Keep up the good work. Love watching every video😍

We have a big cheeseball bucket, lol, that my daughter made a label in the theme of the movie "Up" and we drop all our extra change in it. We go on a big vacation every 2 or 3 years and we drop money, in it over the time in between trips and it becomes our spending money!

I’ve been trying to turn down the thermostat before leaving for work. Also, we use Honey, and Groupon to look for discounts. We got a Ring 2 camera for $119 on Groupon! Those things are $199 normally. Always check Groupon for stuff lol!

many electric companies offer a gismo that you borrow to measure the amount of power each item uses. our power company calls it a 'kill a watt' meter, i paid $50 deposit, which is refunded upon gismo return...you simply plug the gismo into your outlet, plug your item into the gismo, leave it in for about 24 hours and then record the wattage.

In case I missed this pro tip but if you have vents close vents to rooms that need less/no heat so the heat can go to heat most used rooms. Well at least that’s how we run heat in our house.

I laughed so much about the towels. I will use them maybe twice before washing them. Growing up my mum would use them then hang outside until dry then put back in bathroom for a couple of uses. I visited for coffee the other morning early and she was hanging out the towel from her shower. Currently wearing what I did yesterday 😊

Going to leave some comments and tips for everyone too, I used to do classes on penny pinching! ~Leaving chargers plugged in is bad, it can cause fires among other things. I know someone who just a few weeks ago had a fire due to their charger being plugged in.
~"off brand" is actually usually made by the same company as the brand name they just make a different label or sometimes there is a difference a little bit in the ingredients.
~ Meal plan and have a plan b for the left over things you're not using in that meal, for example if you have peppers left that you haven't used, plan to use them in a different meal or freeze them.
~Grocery shop by the sales and use coupons, and PRICE MATCH, Walmart here in Canada does it you show the flyer ad from the store you want the product at the price it is advertised. That will save gas as well as time and money. Some stores don't advertise that they price match but if you ask they will, and hey worst they can say is no, right?
Keep saving guys you're getting there!

I grew up using the same towel for half a week. Mom washed towels twice a week; on Wed. and Saturday. Since being married, I wash towels once a week. I don't wear jeans/pants but I wear the same skirt for 3 or 4 days and I will wear the same shirt for at least 2 or 3 days. My daughter has been doing her own laundry now for quite a few years so between my husband and I, we don't have that much laundry each week. These are some really great tips. I have a friend that uses cheap dish cloths or cut up old towels as her "paper towels" She has a bin that she throws them into when they are dirty or as soon as she is done using it and then she just washes a load of "cloth paper towels". I can't quite get to that point yet, but I do try to use my dish rag more when wiping up kitchen counters. I have also switched to Norwex cleaning cloths for my windows so I don't use paper towels for those anymore. Yes, the initial purchase price of the cloths set you back a bit but they last practically forever. Way to go on getting your financial situation back in check and thank you for being open and honest and helping others. Can't even begin to imagine the guts and nerve it takes to share all the things!

Great list! That is absolutely true on babies and ALL humans for water and going outside! We love the library, but I have failed to go since we moved. We have definitely brought in our own food or a drink. Yes, we reuse our towels for a week, too. We reuse the gallon ziplock bags, just wash out dry and reuse. Don't reuse if they had raw meat in them though...that's just wrong!

We plug those things into power strips and then you can just cut them off with your foot. Its made a big difference in my power bill. I also unscrewed the bulb to the staircase bc we ALWAYS forget to turn it off. After a month, secretly screwed the bulb back in and now we just don't use it because our minds were used to not having it. Washing clothes and using the dishwasher at 2am abd 3am is half the cost because noone else is using the electricity at that time. IT WORKS!!!

Great video. Luckily where I live, our electric company will come to your house and inspect it to make sure you're not wasting electricity. One of the things I was told is, if it has an OFF switch, you do NOT have to unplug it (I still do), however, if it does not have an off switch, you DO need to unplug it (i.e. cell phone chargers).
