Lovely stuff. Most of your commenters seem to be Christian and want to comment on the religious value of the film. However I really think that this is enjoyable and thoughtful for the non-believing audience too, purely as a work of art. I hope you have further opportunities to complete projects like this.
Great story! Nice work! I relate very much since I have moved from the city of millions to the mountain of a few thousand people. The aesthetic fight is real the spiritual battle is ever present but the Word of God wielded by the Holy Spirit conquers the lies the arrows of the principalities sent to distract, discourage and destroy the man or woman of God. Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy, lord have mercy.
God providing a piece of good food to comfort you after a heavy spiritual battle or emotional hardship due to standing up for Him is so familiar as He did the same for me on various occasion just so after the battle or tears have subsided woow!
Its insane how England had three kings that were also saints compared to France that only had one. Such a holy land, yet today its fallen into shamful sin. Such a shame. O lord Jesus Christ, son of god, have mercy on me a sinner. Amen.
Great film, I love how you decided to show Cuthbert's struggle with his doubts of the faith. I'm generally a visual thinker when it comes to telling a story & I find the image of a temptation showing up as a person is really intriguing and creative.
I have studied the saints of England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and have such admiration and love for what they suffered and sacrificed to spread Jesus’ message “to the whole world.” What a wonderfully produced film and message for a time such as this. Thank you.
Christianity was all ONE up until 1054 when Catholics decided to separate and then Lutheran protestants separated from Catholics. But that original Orthodox Christianity remains unchanged until today with all its monasteries and churches.
This is beautiful. It's a real joy to see that voice of doubt, even in the mind of a holy person. I'm at the brink. Right at the point of taking the plunge. Not sure if I'm there yet, but this was a real blessing to see.
Thanks. I've been there myself, and although there are always ups and downs, I've not regretted taking the plunge for a single minute. Wish I'd done it earlier. Peace and good wishes.
Thoroughly enjoyable! Glad RUclips put this in my recommended list! I often wish that St. Cuthbert was the patron saint of England as his story is so deeply intertwined with the history of England and his mission to spread Christianity in the British Isles.
Love this. As a member of the Community of Aidan & Hilda, Cuthbert is one of the saints that inspires us. This film shows Cuthbert in his historical context, but is also contemporary. I will share this.
Nice touch showing him eating onions. His military past is debated of course, but it certainly is a good device for telling his story. Great short film. The existential struggle depicted here was quite moving. Something I deal with as well. The endlessly repeating voices of doubt, questioning every decision I have ever made and every commitment and loyalty I have, foremost to Christ our God. The Jesus Prayer is incredibly powerful, as well as short phrases from the Psalms. The words act as a sword parrying away the attacks of the Enemy. I should start using the Breastplate of St. Patrick too. I’m sure Cuthbert must have known it.
Thank you. And great name btw! I entirely empathise with what you've written there and this story was very much a informed by those kinds of experiences and struggles from within my own life. I think he would've known the prayer, yes. So I'm using the anonymous "Life of Cuthbert" for my military source. But it is more allegorical than anything else. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@OliverMurrayYT Yes, I am rereading it again in anticipation of his feast on the 20th, and it does explicitly mention that he was in battle, supported by divine Grace when the rations were in short supply. I rewatched your film too and loved it even more.
@@OliverMurrayYT I like the name too, haha. St. Cuthbert is my patron saint. I am Orthodox and an American, so it is amazing that I found him (or vise versa). He has been a great help to me. I am not worthy to even be equal to his boots, which were used to heal a paralytic after his repose.
@Cuthbert's Boots Great to read that you found him from the US. He is very well loved in the north east of England in particular, at this stage in our secular society more as a folk hero than as a Christian. But I'm hopefully that will change. Thanks for the support.
Inspiring film! Love it. I finished reading Bede's "Life of Saint Cuthbert" to my young sons recently. Such an amazing saint. More stories of him would be great. Especially the one with the ravens. I liked the part where he was in the ocean reciting Psalms. It made me think of Bede's life.
Amazing that you've been reading it to your sons. I read that for the first time last year after visiting the places where St Cuthbert lived and gave a few nods to it in the film. Thank you!
Well done! This is just plain brilliant. Thank you so much. I found it via the Diocese of York website's News and Events page. Very moving and thought-provoking .... and just asking to be shared widely. Little wonder your mum is so proud of you!
Well done, Oliver! You wisely choose to focus on his inner spiritual struggle instead of his outer miraculous deeds. What's the story for the inspiration for your script? Did you have an insight into this struggle when visiting Lindisfarne? Alexander Clifford did an outstanding job as St. Cuthbert. What's the story of you finding him to play this part? Where did you find replicas of the distinctive pectoral cross and the gospel book of St. Cuthbert?
Thanks Bob! I'm going to make a video on the background of the project and the reasoning behind a lot of it very very soon. It took four months to put together so I just hope I can get a few people to see it first before that. As you know the channels pretty small. I felt so many elements naturally flow into one and other when I visited Lindisfarne last year and followed Cuthbert's steps, I was blown away. The concept just came together in my mind....the significance of what he means/meant to northern england and my own journey to faith (helped by this corner of the internet). He evangelised us once, I think he can do it again. I also think the era has such a Tolkienesque feel to it. Just so much seemed to collide within him and his story. Particularly as Bede writes that he battled evil on Farne island. I just thought...wow. Great. An ascetic on an island few are brave enough to sail to - the spiritual life today - and the trials we face when entering that life. Thank you for your comment on the performance, Alex is an old friend. And I picked up the props online, will be happy to drop you the links if you'd like. I know Cuthbert is your patron saint.
And yes, I feel one can get an insight into his struggle when you visit Farne island (just off of Lindisfarne, where he lived an ascetic life). It is extremely solitary. There's something amiss there despite all the bird watching that goes on. It would be great to have ecclesial presence there again but I believe there's still no running water or electricity.
@Oliver Murray Don't worry about small, just put out content that you personally love, and the audience will eventually come. Look at Dr Allan Barton's channel. It was small for a while, and then it grew exponentially overnight. He puts up what interests him and because he loves it, that love comes through in interesting content. You have done the same and that's what matters. Don't plan too much what to do, instead put up content that interests you without worrying about what might interest the hypothetical audience. Behind the scenes stuff like how to make a short movie is interesting. Stories about the lives of saints and the places they lived are interesting, too. Bede is a treasure trove of ideas.
