You have to realize, the 90's we were still dealing with rampant racism across the U.S. Laws had been changed but racism still existed heavily. The media was one of the last mediums to be racists almost openly, and so they always portrayed rappers and NBA stars and referred to them as former thugs etc. The racism is still there today, but very rare because nowadays it's bad for business (but good if you want to win the Presidency I guess). Remarks like that were common in the 90's but wouldn't fly at all now.
