      I know big touch screens look cool and all but it has nothing to do with the capabilities of the vehicles. In fact Starliner is a more capable vehicle given that it's bigger and has the ability to boost the ISS's orbit.
      The only major advantage Dragon has is that it's cheaper, mainly because of Falcon 9's partial reusability.

    • @chloekaftan
      @chloekaftan 2 года назад +5

      gotta be honest though, as much as i love the touch screens of the dragon capsule, there is something very reassuring about having physical switches and buttons on a vehicle of any kind. this is why even after the global proliferation of touch screen technology, we all still prefer to use keyboards and mice on our computers, and only reserve that tech for more practical devices like drawing tablets or pen displays, or alternatively smart phones.
      edit: that said i do hate how chonky that user interface is... they could have made it a lot slimmer than that at the very least.

    • @donjones4719
      @donjones4719 2 года назад +1

      The footrests detach on Dragon, that makes a larger continuous open space. The footrests in Starliner look like they can detach also. The crew would have taken them off during the trip to the higher orbit.

  • @njengakim
    @njengakim 2 года назад +10

    Boeing just decided to copy the Apollo and Orion shape without taking into account how to maximize habitable volume. Apollo was cramped, to deal with this NASA made Orion bigger. They also designed seats that can be folded to create more space and designed a crew interface made of LEDs that takes up less space. Starliner is the same shape as orion but smaller. However they do not seem to be using any space saving measures. It reminds of Apollo and how it was cramped. That pilot interface should be upgraded to a leaner model. It seems to occupy the whole vehicle.

    • @DeepDeepSpace
      @DeepDeepSpace 2 года назад +1

      The habitable volume in Star liner is fine. The individual holding the camera didn't pan around to show the entire cabin. Furthermore, Starliner is simply a shuttle transporting astronauts and cargo to and from the ISS. The trip is less than two days. You don't need a big space craft for that. A bigger space craft would be heavier and more costly to launch and astronauts are not going to be on Starliner for weeks on end. Lastly, the Apollo command module carried astronauts to the moon and back. It's shape has been proven to work.

    • @calliarcale
      @calliarcale 2 года назад

      The panel does not occupy the whole vehicle; only these two crew stations. It's really tough to get a good view of the inside of Starliner from a handheld camera, especially while most of the interior is stuffed with cargo bags.

      I thought the same. I do wonder if looking beyond the aesthetics there's any positive side to Boeing's concept other than being a larger Apollo capsule. There won't be a refund because they fulfilled their development contract, I suppose. But unless there's some particular feature, I don't see why NASA would want to rely on a separate fleet of these spacecrafts, if it isn't to keep SpaceX and Boeing competing for launch contracts to keep the costs down. Boeing won't beat SpaceX at that game, so they might as well abandon now.

    Starliner looks antiquated already. Exposed plumbing, exposed mechanical devices (2:14) that something could lodge inside of and block. Harsh direct lighting vs SpaceX with soft indirect lighting. Exposed machined surfaces. It's awkward and clumsy. It looks more like an upgraded Apollo than a brand new 2022 modern spacecraft. I'm not impressed Boeing. And by the way, you threw away the $100m worth of launch vehicles that got it there. You have to reuse spacecraft in 2022.

    • @vaska00762
      @vaska00762 2 года назад +5

      Exposed plumbing?
      That's an air duct to maintain air circulation between Station and visiting vehicles. Dragon has those too.
      Exposed mechanical devices?
      That's the external hatch - in the event of an emergency landing in the Atlantic Ocean following a launch escape, it's easy for the crew to open the hatch themselves.
      Dragon is designed for water landings, so there's less of a priority to enable crew to egress themselves through the side hatch.

    • @Neilazbiker
      @Neilazbiker 2 года назад

      @@vaska00762 Obviously the air duct is coming from the ISS. Look around. Looks like hydraulic lines, high pressure gases. Obviously they serve a function, but they are still exposed. Look at SpaceX. It's clean inside, can't get caught on stuff. Can't accidentally hook onto hatch mechanism. It just looks old fashioned and it is.

    • @donjones4719
      @donjones4719 2 года назад +2

      The seats are angular with metal bars and multiple bolts and holes. Now that I've seen the capsule interior, especially the exposed hatch mechanism, I'm pretty sure this is all a conscious design theme. Someone was a big fan of old 1940-50s sci fi movies. They had this look - because they borrowed the look from navy ships and airships.

      @@vaska00762 Oh look! its a Boeing fan BOY! Boeing STILL had thruster issues even on this flight! exposed "plumbing Airducts, whatever but it is STILL exposed and antiquated! • @vaska00762
      @vaska00762 2 года назад +3

      @@jimabbey9544 first... I'm by no means a Boeing fan. I'm actually an Airbus fan, and my favourite vehicle is the ATV. A crew version concept was designed, but it was never developed.
      The European Service Module is ATV's legacy, but the ESM will be visiting the moon instead.
      Thruster issues suck, but that's why you have redundancy built into the thing. If you get a thruster failure or two, being able to complete your mission in full without any impact indicates that the design can manage with failures.
      The air ducts are run from the ISS to visiting spacecraft. While docked, visiting spacecraft have their systems shut off, and power and life support is run from the station instead. That "visible plumbing" is something Dragon deals with as well when docked also.
      If you want to talk about antiquated, look at the station. It's been up there since 2000, using modules designed in the 1980s and 1990s.
      Finally... Starliner is a spacecraft designed to be flown by astronauts with training and experience. Look at the interior of the Space Shuffle - this is a huge step above it. Dragon's shiny interior might look all clean, but it ultimately comes down to a very massive difference in design philosophy.
      Dragon is like the interior of a Tesla. Sure it looks nice, but you have to swipe your fingers on everything to fly it. That's if you're not using the automation all the time. Starliner, by contrast, has flight controls that very strongly resemble those of the Space Shuffle. Starliner's design is one which can allow full manual flight from launch to docking and back to earth again. With a flight control stick, docking control stick and a variety of physical switches, *and* a window right in front of the Commander's seat, Starliner is a spacecraft anyone with the right training can understand. Not just that, but even Kerbal Space Program players can understand many of the fundamental elements of the Starliner control scheme after a quick introduction to the thing. A good few RUclipsrs have gone out to Boeing's facilities and tried their Starliner simulators, and some say it's just as easy to fly Starliner as it is to fly something in Kerbal.
      Not surprising then, that Jeb is the zero g indicator.

      Maybe not as many creature comforts, but I'd say that Starliner is much more of a pilot's spacecraft - full manual physical controls are available for all aspects of flight and the Commander even gets a window to see where the spacecraft is going. Dragon, is by contrast, like a Tesla interior - touch screens and barely any physical controls.

      Starliner is short but fat - there's just not a great camera angle for it. Dragon is tall but thin, so it seems more spacious on cameras, plus SpaceX have been deliberately been using wide angle shots internally.
