    GREAT video! Thank you for taking the time to educate budding artists about pastels. I'm in a beginning art class and found I took to charcoal/pastels like a duck to water. hi Lindy, I bought a few single Seneliers today and one Unison stick.The Senneliers will be replaced by Unison at some point. I have lost pounds of pastel dust from my French beauties, but still love them. When you were saying "pastel sticks, half sticks, pastel pencils,'' my brain was hearing, ''spam sausage and spam, spam spam and bacon.." Monty Python will do that to a person. After 2 years of painting during the winters, I am re-watching your videos and must stress to all your viewers and Patreon followers that they will learn something new when watched again. Cheers.

    Hi I just started painting with pastels. I got my first set of Mungyos and loved it. Now I got a set of Blue Earth Nomad, but they were so expensive, I am afraid to use them. Terry Ludwigs seem to be the top brand right now, but due to the virus, they weren’t going to deliver for three whole weeks. So I bought the Blue Earth and they came within a week. Very soft. Beautiful colors. Hope you get to try both those brands, if you haven’t already.

      I have tried Rembrandt's. Didn't htink I would like them as they are quite hard and I'm a big softy! Turns out I do like them. They're very good for the first layers and also for helping to blend softer pastels. The ends stay nice and sharp so I can get some good detail with them as well.
      I do have a small box of Rembrandts that I use for the first layers . I quite like them although I generally prefer very soft pastels. My favourite hard pastels.

    I love seeing the collections of other pastelists. You have several of my favorite brands there. My top favorite set is 120 Unisons half sticks, that has all the hues and a nice variety of values - too many sets are short on violets, but I need them in landscapes to balance the greens and they're useful in almost everything. Even portraits.
    Looking forward to more of your lessons, keep this up! I just subscribed!

      I do love Unison - my current faves are the Unison Landscape set and the Great American seascape set. Totally agree about the violets- I use them up quickly and many sets just don't have enough. I often choose purple/violets for my paper which does help.

      The British pastels are UNISON. If you live in Britain or the USA they're fairly easy to get if in Australia much harder to come by and very expensive. Good online stores are Jerrysartarama or DickBlick and they both stock UNISON. Happy painting!

  • @oliviapower6503
    @oliviapower6503 6 лет назад

    Thank you very helpful. I note in another video you have mungyo professional pastels, how did you compare them to Unison or sennelier. For Xmas I'm going to purchase /upgrade from the cheaper mungyo student sets and Faber castle, together with Derwents. In your humble opinion what is the best ones you are using. Many thanks

    • @LindyWhittonStudio
      @LindyWhittonStudio  6 лет назад +1

      Oh that's a hard question! If expense is no object then Unison and Terry Ludwigs are wonderful. Terry Ludwigs are very soft so you will want to use a set of harder pastels as well. I find the Derwents too hard but they could work well for the initial underpainting and block ins . I think Unison are a great all rounder with some very lovely colours. I find Sennelier a bit too crumbly. The Mungyo Gallery handmades are a very good option as well if you want a mid range price. They have a useful slightly tapered shape like the Unisons and a good range of colours in the full set but I haven't really looked at the ranges in the smaller sets. I use them a lot ot demonstrate to my class because they can then see what you can create on a tighter budget.
      If I could only have one set it would be a Landscape set of Unisons as they are soft but not too soft , a great shape, glide on smoothly, good range of colours with some very useful purple violets. Oh - and maybe I would want a Seascape set of Great American Artworks as well-!! They are soft, great seascape colours but I can also use them in landscapes.
      Sorry , I probably haven't been very helpful-- it's so hard to choose.
      I think the best way is to set your budget, then look for the best value set that matches your interest (portrait, floral, landscpae etc,) in the better brands. What you want is as many sticks as you can get for your money and shopping around online is the best way to get that value. If you can get a half stick set it's a great way to try out a brand because you get double the colours for the same money.

    hello, nice video.
    I came into contact with pastel painting about 6 months ago and fell in love. I haven't started due to the expense of the pastels, but I would very much like to start and get nice quality no matter the cost. please is their any favorites that you personally are better than the rest? it seemed like you enjoyed the British brand quite alot. I am willing to buy more expensive pastels for better quality. should I use chalk or oil pastels or both? I really just want to take this up as a hobbie and continue. I want to make this work for me.
    Thank you and again great video!!👍👍👍

    • @LindyWhittonStudio
      @LindyWhittonStudio  7 лет назад +1

      Sorry for taking a while to get back to you. I prefer soft (chalk) pastels but I do have a small set of oil pastels which I don't use very often. My favourite all rounder brand is Unison ( very expensive) I love Great American Artworks for their very soft , creamy pastels which don't crumble easily. A cheaper good quality option is Rembrandt or Colorfix but they just aren't soft enough for me. Sennelier and Schminke are both great brands but expensive and Senneliers can break very easily. Another US brand is Terry Ludwig - has some wonderful colours.(expensive ) Then you need some hard sticks or pencils for fine detail - I use Conte- but any brand will work fine.
      A good way is to buy a small half stick set of one of the good brands - a box of 36 to 60 is a good starter. That way you get more colours for your money and I break my sticks in half anyway! Try an online store like Jerrysartarama, Dick Blick or CheapJoes artsupplies - they often have great discounts on pastel sets.
      Good luck!

      I actually just bought the complete 200 Mungyo Gallery handmade set recently and did a review here
      ruclips.net/video/E6XcBB3VFzY/видео.html
      I took a punt on the full set as I'd never tried them before but they are very good value for their cost. They remind me of the much more expensive Unison, have a good colour range , a nice feel and are plenty soft enough without being buttery. I think they're a good all rounder and a great choice for anyone on a tight budget who wants a handmade pastel. Happy painting!
