- This review is covering the Sony Bravia 9. While I am unable to purchase the TV at this time, the time I spent with it at MWave impressed me enough to purchase the TV in the future. HDR Content is stunning, SDR Content is bright and vibrant as well. While there are some flaws, including a very small amount of blooming and the lack of specular detail in star scenes, this TV more than makes up for it with full field brightness. If you can demo this tv, I heavily recommend doing so before making a purchase.

The Star-field Performance is MUCH BETTER on the 85” BRAVIA 9 due to the massive increase in dimming zones PER SQUARE INCH VS the 75” and 65”.
@@Freakyguy666 thanks for the comment! You're correct, I was only able to see the 65 inch version. I would imagine the larger pixels and more dimming zones would absolutely help this out.
This would not help. Even the 85inch has twice as dimmingzones but its still not neraly enough for such scenes. The allghorithn will work like on the smaller sizes and it would look neraly identical. Only if the 85inch has a better panel with higher contrast it would make a difference.
@@91DivineAngel I would imagine the perceived brightness is higher just because the stars would look bigger on a bigger screen. That being said, if the algorithm works well and there are more zones, you should be able to control the light better in star fields to get better brightness... I can see the issue coming with a moving star field where the backlighting struggles to keep up though. It would be a very interesting test to see a static field vs a moving one 🤔
@@SpencersStuffTV the problem is that there multiple stars in each zones. So there is not much what more zones can do so long as the zone is bogger than the Star or just slighty bigger. This is the Physics off LCDs. In most scenarios more zones will truly help and the 85inch will look better but in starfieödscenes even lowerend full array LCDs like from sony themself will look the same. As owner off the 85inch x95l and had the x900e(only 45zones!) I can tell you that the x900e looks the same. Everything else looks dramaticaly better on the x95l. My 85B9 will arrive maybe wendsday so i can compare 2808zones vs my 862zones from the X95L
@@91DivineAngelOh it helped I saw it myself going up in size it’s more than 1300 more dimming zones and about 1000 more over the 75inch. It Eliminated all blooming. It’s still not Oled stars but close while everything else is twice as bright as Oled

I have the 85" Bravia 9 XR90. I love it. Just started playing Horizon Forbidden West. Holy crap does it look great. Colors, the HDR, clarity and smoothness, contrast.
Watching movies in HDR, so nice. Finished Avatar the Way of the water.

How are the viewing angles on the Bravia 9, and is the contrast comparable to the LG G4?
@@davidross7255 I would say you start losing contrast at about 40 to 45 degrees off angle and the contrast begins to fall off. Not much. In terms of contrast, the g4 has superior contrast due to it being self emissive. The B9 still has one of the highest contrast ratios for a mini led. The difference is down to brightness. I recommend checking out rtings.com to see all the details!

@@davidross7255 the u8n was not there but the TCL qm8 was. I imagine they're very similar. As a value brand both Hisense and TCL are great, but their processing is nowhere near as good as LG or Sony. If you're a person who wants all the details pulled out of a picture and wants that granular detail, I would get the LG G4.

Great review! I own a Sony and I went to a store and I was floored by a sea of Oleds from LG and Samsung. Gorgeous TVs but they all were missing something. It wasn’t until I saw the A80L and the X90L that I found the missing parts. Then I saw the A95L which combined the best parts of those TVs.
As you said feeling is so important and when I look at LG and Samsung, I applaud the effort but not the performance especially since I feel they are blurry. It’s like an Olympic performance that is bound to receive a silver or bronze medal. The Sonys do so many things right that even the X90L with all its flaws is almost a world class TV.
Also SDR and standard mode remain the most common formats for a lot of content. Also, if anyone has ever compared filmmaker to standard mode with warm on a sony, one of those modes looks like the tv has failed and you need to call tech support and repair it.😂
@@techsamurai11 I feel the same way! Once you get used to the Sony processing and color science, it's hard to adjust away from it. LG is getting very good though, just not quite there. They're the perfect middle ground between Sony and Samsung.
Sdr is still so important and I feel alot of times it's looked over by people
Thank you for uploading this! Not many people out there will ever get to see these all side by side in person, so I appreciate the insight. I’m in the market for a sports watching tv and was between the B9 and the S90C. Seems like the B9 is built for that usage.

I can tell you now, I really like the b9 for sports. the sustained brightness in SDR is huge. I always say you want more brightness than you need so you can dial it back whenever.
If you want and oled for sports, the LG G4 was great as well, granted, it still wasn't close in brightness to the bravia 9. You could also save some money and look at the bravia 7. That TV is more than capable.
The Bravia 9 sounds amazing except for one thing: According to the Rtings review, turning on BFI results in a blurry, duplicated image. I always use BFI on OLED because it increases motion resolution in retro games and helps create a more “filmic” look for movies. So to hear BFI may not work properly on the Bravia9 is a potential deal breaker for me. Would love to get feedback on this from B9 owners. Thanks for your video it was super informative!

It's not an OLED so why would you need BFI? It's going to having smoother motion due to the fact it's an LCD panel.
I don't use BFI or the "motion blur" setting in games. I could try it. But don't see why.
I am using VRR and playing Horizon forbidden west and it's smooth as butter and looks fantastic, I am playing on PC with RTX4090.
Also a lot of these things comes down to the user of the TV and what they notice or not. Using a program that could detect minor duplication in a freeze frame is not the same thing as you the person playing it. You might not see it at all.
You can never know any of this unless you test it yourself. That is unfortunately how things work. You cannot rely on what others tell you. It's only yourself and what you notice.
Some people are super sensitive to stuff and see it when others don't.

It's definitely the TV to beat this year for best TV of the year. I just wonder will it beat the fantastic OLEDS by SONY, SAMSUNG, and especially LG.

I can say some aspects it definitely beats OLED, some it doesn't. As I said in the video. I'm sure the purists will always go toward OLED, but people who want to have fun and push their TVs will have a blast with the Bravia 9. I look forward to the day we get an affordable self emissive display with the brightness of a mini led.
I currently have an a90j and am x930e so I am in the same boat. You can appreciate both technologies for what they are!

Hey Spencer , I’m originally from Michigan also . Great video, got my 85 inch Bravia 9 delivered last Thursday so far so good . I’m still getting a feel for the settings and features but I can vouch for this panel indeed .

My fav thing about the tv so far is the detail to image . Granted it’s only been since Thursday … I’ve seen the power of what this panel can do . I had the 85 inch Sony X95L but something told me to invest into this option instead . Then the price dropped 700 I had Best Buy bring and mount the 85 option. It’s very immersive for sure .
Which would you say is more important for HDR movies: big, bright highlights or smaller, specular highlights?
Also: how does the Bravia 9 do when displaying vibrant colours? I’ve seen the S95D myself and was very impressed with its colours. How does the Sony compare to it?
@@rayenwoomed5323 for the first part: this is down to your preference. Do you want little specs/10% windows that will glow, or do you want the bigger windows to shine brighter? Usually the larger windows are where led tvs shine. I personally prefer the larger window brightness because more of the content I consume are in larger windows. Plus full field scenes jump off the screen And that wows me more.
As for color volume and vibrancy, the s95d has a higher color volume, but the processing is nowhere near as good as the Bravia 9. In my opinion, the s95d is a one trick pony. It offers a bright, punchy, and unwieldy image that looks extremely fake to me. But I know some people like this.
The Bravia 9 feels like the middle ground. You can crank the brightness and the color is does have will not fall off since it is also a qd tv.

@@rayenwoomed5323 its tough to answer. I tell people, if you're in a dark room, if you want extreme brightness in the dark room, you'll probably want to use biased lighting. That being said, the Bravia 9 could be a great dark room tv because, as you turn down the brightness to your comfort level, your black levels should improve. I personally like having the extra overhead to make the TV how I like it. On an OLED, if it isn't bright enough, you're stuck with it. You have a ton of flexibility with all TV's now
Do you think they will release a 97” or 98” Bravia 9 next year?
@@tedshep after talking to the Sony reps at MWave, I didn't hear anything leaning that way... Granted they have NDA's, so they could be working on something. Your guess is as good as mine. There have been A LOT of people requesting it according to them

What tv would you recommend for sports and movies. I am not into video games. Huge oled fan. Debating between 77” a95L, 77” Bravia 8 or 83 A80L.
@@chrisrizzo627 for this year, I think the LGG4 is the best sports OLED personally. I still have issues with ABL kicking in on Sony oleds

@@lawball1727 I unfortunately haven't seen the 85 inch version. From what Brian said at brianstechtherapy, he said the 85 inch is a true successor to the z9d, which is regarded as the best led to ever created. I would say that's high praise

Hold on, surely the OLED produce more colour volume while not getting quite as bright? 🤔
Also, the Samsung S95D is currently the brightess OLED with its third generation QD-OLED panel. I'm now skeptical of anything you're saying here.
@@SagaciousFrank the issue you run into is sustainable brightness and power allocation. OLED's have to allocate power to each pixel, which can cause some problems when it comes to shadow detail in high apl scenes. If they're cranking the pixels to run at the highest brightness possible on, say, a sun, that's less power to feed brightness to another part of the screen. This was the issue in the movie Alpha. And as 4k nit content becomes more common, I think oleds are going to keep running into the same problem. This power budget is not the same on a mini led, which is why it can get brighter.
The issue with Samsung is, they were definitely bright, but their image processing and usage of the brightness was nowhere near as good as Sony's or LG's. It ended up turning the picture from believable to fake very quickly. There are some people who will lean that way, but I'm not one of them. Down to it, this is all down to opinion and what you like. There's nothing wrong with that
@@SpencersStuffTV , thanks for reply. However, the point I am making is that although OLED cannot (at least currently and perhaps never) get as bright as LCD/LED, the colour volume is objectively still wider in testing and in real world practice. In that same Alpha scene with the sun, FOMO showed that whilst the Bravia 9 is indeed brighter, that the S95D had more colour volume. It's not night and day, but it's there. I'm not defending OLED or Samsung. I've never owned an OLED. My current TV is now a 5-6 year old Sony Bravia XF90. And I'm fully aware of Samsung's dubious motion processing and upscaling, which have broadly put me off their TVs. But the fact remains, the Samsung S95D is brighter than the LG G4, and so is currently the brightest OLED TV available on the consumer market at the moment.

I feel that man. I wish I had a Robert Zohn in the area haha. As the channel grows I'll start picking tvs and focusing on the longevity of the tvs. I'm getting married this year so I'm a bit tight on funds. I love this hobby so much but its soooo expensive lol
I’m the same as you about SDR. Had my 75” z9d for nearly 7 years. 840 nits calibrated is a sight to behold. Felt no need to upgrade until the B9. Have an lg c1 upstairs and the apl on some content drives me nuts.

After watching this video I want the Bravia 9 85" more than ever. I just can't justify in my mind getting rid of my 65" Sony OLED for it.

The bravia 9 is an amazing mini led the best ever , I saw in person a few weeks ago in person and I got to put my flash drive in for my space movies I love not for me the contrast wasn't no were the same ad oled I will take the infinite contrast on my Panasonic MZ2000 MLA and A95L over brightness every day of the week .

You don't have the pixel level control to get the same specular highlights on a small scale, but the Panasonic and a95l still cannot touch the Bravia 9s full field brightness or larger window brightness. It's all down to preference. I prefer that over the star field personally. Nothing wrong with either preference. I appreciate you commenting. What tv do you have?
@SpencersStuff1777 I have Panasonic MZ2000 MLA and A95L and the best tv in my house is the Panasonic MZ2000, they are a bit better at processing than Sony when it comes to movies in my opinion , they have a Hollywood colurists tune there tvs and it shows.

Are you holding off for a little while on tvs, or are you looking to upgrade? I know the a95l is obviously new, but some people upgrade quickly!
@SpencersStuff1777 I am holding off for the 2025 pentonic chip set for Panasonic and Sony for 2025 both will have 4 hdmi 2.1 ports finally .Panasonic is the King of accuracy even better than Sonyi love both though .

@@AnythingGoesJoJo this is like a better controlled z9k. It feels a bit more predictable in its local dimming. I think the reduction in resolution helps this panel quite a bit

My major complaint with the Bravia 9 is how many of those features were left out of the Bravia 7 which is also expensive. The Bravia 7 is going to outsell the Bravia 9 by a considerable margin and those folks will get a lot less for their money.
Which is logical. Why would they get more for their money and reduce the value of the Bravia 9. It makes no sense.
What features? The wide angle and more dimming zones and better 22-bit control. Of course they need to keep the extra for the Bravia 9 or they could just have Bravia 7 as the only option.
@@techsamurai11 you're saving money going with the Bravia 7. There'd be no reason to buy a Bravia 9 if the 7 had all the features. That backlight system on the 9 is more expensive to build than the traditional mini led backlighting in the 7.
@@SpencersStuffTV it's the wide angle and finish that they could have included. The backlight of the Bravia 7 could have been just a tad closer to the A95L.

Starfields in movies are fine. They are nothing like starfield tests like on Spears and Munsil. Because they are just a "backdrop". Sure the stars might be 20% less bright than the best OLEDs. But those scenes do not happen often and you do not have an OLED next to your TV to even know. It's more like how well does it handle the black in those scenes and does it bloom constantly. It does not. The blacks and contrast is amazingly good. It's a miniLED that can hang with OLED in 90+ % of the content that is deep contrast. In anything else it exceeds the OLEDs.
@@Swecan76 I've said the same thing myself. We always focus on one "downside" of a tv when there's no perfect technology. It's all down to preference. I think too many people look at a TV from a "reviewers" point of view and don't add their human opinions to a tv. These mini LEDs have gotten INCREDIBLY good

I can do one better than this video. I'm waiting for Sony to release a 55" B9, so I can relieve my Oled from any possible future burn in from gaming in the ManCave.
My coworker bought the 75" B9, and we had a chance to directly compare it to his 77" A95L via 4k UHD blu-ray movies, and a 4K splitter. Let me just say this, the B9 will be the best LED for years to come, I find it slightly better than the X95L LED, from the previous year. With that said, I could definitely tell the differences in PQ between the two sets, while the B9 definitely had brighter highlights, the A95L had more color definition, and saturation in those highlights, additionally, when we played Mad Max "Fury Road", you could clearly see the benefits of QD-Oled, way more detail and saturation, but as stated, the B9 can reproduce the brightest whites, but I can easily still see some blooming in super dark scenes with bright highlights, and yes, to some this will be a non-factor, but to me, it just validates the fact that LED can never scientifically match, or beat any self-emissive panel...
@@bigcdub it's all down to preference too and watching habits. The a95l was still a great looking TV but even in the brightest scenes, it didn't really touch the b9's overall brightness. If you're in a dark room, blooming can happen, but I can also say it's not noticeable if you use backlighting, which I do.
My real issue with OLED is always ABL. I have not come up on an OLED that doesn't dim when I play games and it's infuriating. There really is no perfect TV out there right now unfortunately. But I'm happy we have options. I still love OLEDS. I have an a90j currently and it's solid. But I can't stand it when gaming.
@@SpencersStuffTV Even in the dark, I could clearly tell the A95L was far superior, with regards to contrast and detail, and that’s where we did most of the 4K Blu-ray watching. Keep in mind, both sets were calibrated, and yes, the B9 definitely had brighter highlights, we could easily tell the A95K had much more detail in it’s highlights, especially the scenes where the guy plays the guitar with the fire shooting out of it, the A95L trounced the B9 in detail, and this is my whole point. People dumb down the blooming, but anyone particular about their PQ will definitely notice it, no matter how minimal, it still exists, and so does the off axis bad viewing angles. I think its saving grace is its bright room performance, which is stunning.
Like you said, it’s personal preference, but it still will never match, or surpass any self emissive panel in overall PQ period, and those are just facts. I own 5 QD-Oled panels, including the A95L, A95K, and S95C and S95B. If they release the 55” B9, I’ll have that also…
@@bigcdub absolutely. And even still oleds have their strengths in the whole. I know for me, a large factor in moving to the b9 is sdr performance. I prefer that brightness. I guess we are getting to that point of "what's good enough." I have a ton of backlighting so my room is never dark and I even like standard modes on my tv. I'm not a big person on creators intent either as I feel it takes away from owning your tv. But I can appreciate people liking a TV for that as well. OLED's are still phenomenal, and as I said in the video, you really can't buy a bad tv anymore
@@bigcdubMy 85 eliminates all blooming non-at all the extra thousand zones is really helpful and it’s the best HDR experience I’ve ever had and this is coming from somebody who owns Oleds in every room. I can’t explain to tell you how well this TV handles perfect blacks it’s almost as if the tv turns off there’s are scenes I thought I sat on the remote lol
@@NexGenTek Yeah, I still want the 55”, if they ever release one, but from seeing the 65” in-store, and the 75” my coworker has, I could still see blooming, not saying it didn’t still look awesome, just saying it’s still definitely there. I also own many Oled’s, and at the end of the day, the B9 is still just a LED panel, so it can never control saturation at the pixel level, and the content we watched on 4K UHD Blu-ray, you could definitely see the difference in a dark room. Bright room viewing, I agree will you 100%…

We've been taken through the rollercoaster gubbins of these LED TVs time and time again yet no one knows how they do it! Mini leds will sweep the board when it comes to nuanced high fidelity. With Neo Qled it's the QD factor, with Sony it's about Bravia engine. Where OLED would need really accomplish anything in the future it's screen size. As with TCL sets we just see them getting bigger.
Sony absolutely needs to make larger screens. The issue is, we have to pay a ton for it. I'm so excited to see where tvs go in the future. This Bravia 9 really opened my eyes to how far we have come.
PLEASE HELP! Bravia 9 85" or A90L 98".....This is really a tough one for me. The wow factor of the 98" will be amazing but it appears the Bravia 9 is the best TV ever produced.
Hey man! They had the x90l 98inch in the room as well! I can easily say the Bravia 9 outperformed it in every aspect. I personally would get the Bravia 9 OR wait to see if Sony brings out an upgraded large format tv next year.
he best gaming display on the market right now is the LG G4, people are buying high end TVs for pure gaming, and Sony really dropped the ball in this regard.

I shared that opinion until I watched tech with KG’s video on the S95D. It looked best in most gaming scenes and I love the color brightness of the Qd oled so I think he changed my mind.
The g4 is extremely impressive. It offers a higher peak brightness than the Samsung, but you run into issues with color volume reduction at that brightness. It's a tradeoff.
We need to talk about more detail than just "gaming." There are a lot of gamers out there who don't play shooters or fast paced games to where ever microsecond matters.
@@SpencersStuffTV I hear ya. If you are gaming at a level where you are overly concerned about microseconds.. I would buy a top-of-the-line gaming monitor.
@@Redridge07 you're speaking the truth. I see too many reviewers saying they're hardcore gamers, yet you're on an 85 inch tv. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me haha. But to each their own. I can give up a few milliseconds if I'm more immersed in what I'm playing.
I respect Sony for taking the risk on this. Heaven knows they have taken a lot of flack for making a non OLED flagship, but it is increasingly looking like Sony had good reasons for doing this.
@@Sabundy as they keep honing this tech in, it will only get better. There's definitely a market for these types of products. Glad people are being receptive toward it... Granted I've come across a ton of OLED fanboys who always put the technology down. It's a shame. They're missing out on a great product
The A95L still remains Sony’s flagship TV despite it being released last year

@@SpencersStuffTV For 2024 yes but their current flagship TV regardless of technology or year of production is still the A95L, at least as far as I’m aware. This is not a dig at the B9 by the way.
In addition, I don’t know about the U.S. or Canada but in literally every other country the 77 inch A95L from last year is still more expensive than even the 83 inch B9. In the UK, the 83 inch B9 is £500 cheaper than even the smaller 77inch A95L released last year. That gap will probably widen as it doesn’t seem Sony are dropping the price of the A95L.
I’m considering the 83 inch as I already have the 77 inch Sony OLED but I’m concerned about the viewing angle of the B9 which may be a problem with our living room set which is currently fine with the OLED.

Bro be real. Noone gives af about filmmaker mode it's a fake mode. Real life doesn't look like filmmaker mode. Standard colorful is the mode close to. This standard filmmaker is disgusting
@@johnlerma9753 I am not a huge fan of filmmaker mode either lol. I always say "if you want to neuter your tv, throw it on filmmaker mode." To me I'd rather use the tvs processing and make a lifelike, punchy, and enjoyable image that brings a sense of immersion. I can buy a projector if I want filmmaker accuracy
