Don't try to compete with these guys. These are the best. Tutorials are a great way to improve. These guys are artists plain and simple. The probably have a lot more time to spend. Don't get discouraged.
Tutorials are not a good way to improve. you shouldn't copy* details, because you are then restricted by the size of them and changing the scale style of your builds will be much harder. Only recently have I achieved a building style similar to this, only because I made my own* details.
* looking at details in real life architecture and trying to reproduce them is good however, since ti will never be the same and you can always change the size of them.
I see what you're saying but I learned a great deal from them. Tutorials taught me how to make shapes effectively and it helped me with developing my own style. Of course I changed my builds as I was following along based on my own tastes. It also helps build some level of confidence. Beginning artists almost always study the masters and try to replicate their work and techniques before developing their own style. Just my opinion experience though. I agree that replicating real life is probably the best way to get better.
I don't think that the tutorials help you with that. The more you build, the better you become, and while you can listen to tips, like add shape, you must experiment first to find what works, and many times, what you learned in a tutorial, is the opposite of what you must learn to build in a different or more unique style, and adding new shapes and angles to your buildings would be harder, than it would be when you had just been finding out what worked best. Although I don't remember looking at tutorials, I do know that I looked at other builds, and tried to copy shape and details, and trying to make a new style was hard. When trying to get a style like Elysium Fire's I had to experiment for a very long amount of time. That is because, these builds are NOT an arrangement of similar details and shapes, but rather, what works best for the scale of builds they are doing. Also, shape requires the most experimentation to get right, excluding that of modern builds, which much of can be learned by looking at rl modern buildings.
You know, We all have built dirt houses. But we upgraded it with some new blocs, structures, forms etc... look at cool stuff on tweeter, look other timelapses, learn to use WorldEdit, custom terrains... and search inspiration on pinterest for example ;)
