Great video, well done, no waffle just a skilled man with his dog getting on with the job with economy of effort. The best advert i've seen for this axe which is a joy to use for general purpose woodland work. Punches above its weight but light to carry too.
The axe looked to do a super job to me and you are an accomplished woodsman, mate. I’m building an functional set of axes for our new firewood biz and I’ve been impressed w the one GB axe I’ve added so far. Question…if this axe isn’t your favorite, I’d sure be interested in knowing what is…

Honestly I can't get over how absolutely amazing your dog is..... I have told you that I have been a 4x's owner of them (2 black, 2 white; I dont discriminate)..... Also, nice swinging.
Every axe is constructed for certain tasks. The GB Scandi was specifically designed for softwood pine forests. To be doing the work and the kind of trees he's doing in the video you'd definitely want something bigger and different like an American felling axe. (Though the capability of the Scandi is clearly shown) All that said, I have a GB Scandi and love it. It really is a quality axe and capable of larger work and hardwoods no problems. I've split larger hardwood rounds with it that I initially thought it wouldn't be able to handle. Only con is the handle is a bit on the thicker side. But if you're going out into the woods to do this kind of thing you want something different for sure. The Scandi makes a great pack axe where you have enough axe to do larger work but don't want to be lugging around a full sized felling axe. 99.9% of people will never be doing or have to be doing what this guy does in this video their entire lives. I'm an avid outdoorsman, camper, hunter, and bushcrafter....I'm not a lumberjack or aborist...😉 And I'd suspect most others aren't either. The GB Scandi is plenty of axe for your average person....though definitely overpriced these days.
@@pennsyltuckyreb9800 best description of this scandinavian thus far. If I'm walking into the woods for some part time fun with a pack on my back, this is the ax I want. Hell if I'm hiding in the apocalypse this is probably the ax I have. If I have a homestead. This ax will also be with me but next to a few others.
Did you thin the handle on this? I know they do come quite thick don't they. I thinned mine a bit, but it could still do with a bit more. They're still usable out of the box and a lot better than the hultafors or Husqvarna axes , but you still need to put a good hour or two in before they're up to scratch. I've got my Husqvarna dialled in lovely now though, nice slim handles make all the difference.
Yea thinned out the grind and the grind on the head a bit. Approximately 18° in this video. Sold the axe shortly after this. Too light and too narrow for my liking.
@@elemental4rce after I wrote this comment I thinned the handle down even more to my liking. Mine is not too bad, pretty decent profile. I sold one that was really thin and a strange concave shape. The one I have now seems like it has a nice little profile. Luck of the draw I think.
It's just how it feels in general whilst using it, not something you can really see or put into words. It's certainly capable, as you can see. Its just I have better axes that I get more enjoyment from basically.
When my favorite ASMR chopper posts a vid, I stop what I’m doing and watch. Gotta get rid of that stupid hook swell they put on their handles. It’ll rub a hole in your hand real quick.
@@KevinsDisobedience I was going to get arty and seal something in the epoxy like an insect caught in Amber but I mixed the epoxy up and forgot. But if I have to do it again.... Although hopefully just make my own handles now.
Lovely video and I'm really trying not to get too jealous of you out in the woods with a useful purpose...... and a fire. Do you have any problem with ivy on the trees down there? If aye, do you take it down or off the trunks?
Provided you dont hit any rocks or chip the edge on a super hard knot, it would most likely still be reasonably sharp afterwards. GBA steel is pretty hard and holds an edge relatively decently.
No, I think that goes to the english pattern mod. I just wanted to get this video done because I had been talking to people about the granfors a fair bit recently. Cheers Joey!
I know what you mean about swedish handles... My Agdor Montreal came INSANELY thick and i spent hours rasping it down to a comfortable size. It blew me away how big their handles are stock... I was spoiled with my Council tool that i tuned up into a super thin whippy handle lol
@@bladesandbows1521 i was recently gifted a made in Germany hatchet thats a beast, but yes the handle was very thick lol i had to thin that one down aswell. The steel also skated some of my files.
What about the Council spoiled you? I have heard alot about this brand. I suppose those shopping price would like the brand. Just wondering what you like so much about it that it spoiled you? Thanks have a great one.
@@damienvanhalen Just that council tool axes come with some of the best stock handles. They hardly need any thinning done to them, if at all. While other axed may be better, their handles come super thick like clubs, which need a lot of rasping and and fine tuning to be comfortable. Especially if you plan on working with them for hours at a time. Council tool just makes great axes for affordable prices. I wouldn't call them cheap, but they are inexpensive.
Great video Owen !! Man that axe means business, how thin did you grind it, I’ll be honest I was getting nervous watching the upward swing, I’m like I hope he doesn’t go through. It was relieving to see you finish with an over head chop lol .. I know you know what you’re doing I’m not coming here to judge your chopping after I saw what you did I realized you almost had to. Just saying it made me nervous a buddy of mine got an axe to the head once swinging up.
Just making sure I understand, it's the best on youtube because of it - because it's what it is, you handling it, the way you take care of it or...? Looking at the 430 right now actually (aspirations of buying a plot and disappearing occasionally)
@@elemental4rce thats really great:) I see a lot of people on youtube and in the forests where i live that they cut down beautiful trees for no reason, which is just sad

Bosque infinito, This forest is too dense, trees need to be felled to allow more light and more space for the existing trees to be healthy and for new growth as well.
Anyone else see the dog run for his life...that's a pretty smart dog !!
Looks like the dog is playing a game to me😊
Steven from Skillcult suggested I get over here and learn how to become an axe master. I will now begin with the binge watching. Cheers!!
Oh my God! I was scared for your dog. On 1:32. Great video, thanks so much for your job.
Another enjoyable high quality video. The music, fire and close ups of notching and back cuts was a nice touch.

What don't you like about the Forest Axe?
How much did you hone the handle and bit compared to how it came?
Hello Mr J. Which of your axes would you prefer to use instead in this circumstance?
What axe do you prefer over this one? In truth you swing this axe as if it were made for you.

Can’t do it, every width of a tree deserves a different axe.
