1:32 It's amazing how much a difference a simple fog effect makes to visual fidelity.
. . . it's the same way they do fog in the first game. They just choose not to overapply it so you can see the track.
Great comparison. I reckon every version of Colin McRae and Dirt has looked amazing in the era that it released. Codemasters always do really well. Now we just need a new TOCA.

McRae 2.0 is great af
It was great because it was about the physics more than graphics. Controls suck for newer ones and they're not nearly as much fun.

HD bloom was what games used to make previous gen graphics look better, before games started using the full potential of the HD platforms. It's the reason why the original DiRT and GRiD games don't hold up as well as later entries in terms of visuals. While I don't have a favourite DiRT game, GRiD 2 is definitely my personal pick from that series, and I'm glad it was the first to be backwards compatible on Xbox One! Still wish they made DiRT 1 & 2 compatible though...

Good ol' '07, the time of undeniable bloom galore.
That said, I was there from the beginning, back in '98, remember playing the thing with a cool hover cars cheat code; Some of the most fun I had with a rally game, Sega Rally aside that is; Sega Rally is legendary.
I'll never forget the last track of UK championship in the first game - night and fog. It was so dark we used to set the brightness of monitor to maximum just to see anything haha.
I'm definitely subscribing this was one of the best comparisons I've ever seen and with this game all versions were impressive for that time greetings from Macedonian in Australia
Whom else would still play every single one of these today and still have a boatload of fun?

You too? I was of course extremely bad at it and I didn't even speak english back then so I just pressed random buttons until I somehow got into a race...
but the most important thing was that I was having fun and I still have fun playing that game to this day

The foliage in the trees looks rubbish in 2017. 2015 looked better in that way.

I'm with Colin McRae Rally 2.0 and I'm good. Best game in the series after the latest Dirt 2.0. Those are the only two I'm really fond of.

Grew up playing CM 3, 4 and 5 😊 great memories. Had Dirt 3 on PS3 which paled in comparison. Just got Dirt Rally 2.0 and hopeful it captures the magic of the early games.

No4 still looks incredible to this day.
And the co-driver STILL sounds like they are giving out the directions remotely rather than from the co-driver seat of a rally car being thrown around a dirt track.
I do like DiRT still though. The software house had the advantage of being located in the UK's motorsport belt. Amazing detail in the game.
Dirt 3 was really over-saturated with almost no vibrant colours and the bloom of the first Dirt made my eyes bleed a bit, but overall it's impressive to see the progress in a single series in 20 years, especially the few versions in-between where the graphics really improved!
2003 was my shit. I spent hours playing split screen with my dad. Pity it died.

One of my 1st games on my PS was Colin McRae. such a nostalgia.
My fav is and always will be Dirt 3
Dirt 4 is fun but my laptop won't run 60fps stable. Dirt 3 is my favourite and runs 60fps stable even on high settings. Such an amazing and fun game to play. People who complain about the tint effect it can be removed by changing the value in post processing-> effect file which is located in Installation folder on pc platform. After the tint effect is removed the game looks amazing i should say its better than dirt 4 except rain scenes.

Tree quality really took a dive in DiRT 4.

I have Colin McRae Rally 1 on PS1 because I've read how difficult it is to get it to run on Windows 7.

i had every one of them..every one.. except dirt 4 until im buying it..and perhaps i would be the only one here but i believe c.m. dirt for ps3 was the best of them...there was smth special the 1st time you go up that pikes peak with an escudo..or raid your way across with trucks and 4x4 's. or buggy jump through looped stages..and when you mastered the handling rally stages were as fun and as challenged as ever...

Actually, CMR 3 was 2002 not 2003, and CMR 04 was 2003 not 2004.
yes this is evolution ...,, but... i still waiting for an real overall improvement since we have now video cards with 16 GB ram DDR5 and 8 cores CPu etc....

Dirt Rally (2015) is still my favorite......Dirt 4 was where they started falling off, the cars felt less realistic and less connected. Also, Dirt Rally 2.0 requires you to be online which is entirely unnecessary, and Dirt 5 was literally a bag of dicks
