- Dragon’s Dogma 2 is bringing us deeper relationships in a huge open world, four times bigger than before. With more characters than ever, the big question is: will romance play a role in this highly anticipated sequel?
While we're not sure about the romance details in DD2 yet, I’m taking a closer look at how the first game handled its somewhat complex and awkward romance system. This exploration is crucial to understanding how romance might work in the sequel.
In the original Dragon’s Dogma, your love interest and the whole romance system was a surprise at the end based on an invisible affinity system. If Dragon’s Dogma 2 follows the same idea, this guide will be key to figuring out how romance works in the game.
So, without further ado, let’s uncover how romance worked in the original Dragon’s Dogma, with the hope of shedding light on how it will work in the sequel.

Dragon Age & Mass Effect are respectfully mature games intended for a mature audience, my content will feature such themes, so please be aware of that when watching. Thanks! Игры
Seriously, my biggest hope with DD2 is that we actually get to choose who we want our character to be with. It was infuriating when I would give the Arisen's Bond to Aelinore or Quina only to get to the final battle and find out the dragon chose freaking Reynard as my beloved just because I completed his quest more recently and accidentally maxed out his affinity, and then my reward for saving the world was having to watch my straight male Arisen get straddled by another dude against his own will. I love the first Dragon's Dogma, but that was by far the stupidest, most asinine way I've ever seen character relationships handled in a video game.
🤣
My Arisen ended up with Madeline.
My bro ended up with Fournival, because he kept usin his shop and doin his quests to get stuff
I got Valmiro first play through, he’s not a bad looking guy but man I just don’t swing that way 😂
I spent every moment in between quests talkin to and givin Mercedes stuff after he got Fournival a 3rd time
the dragon already stole me heart... metaphorically and literally
Yeah, I sincerely hope it's a way more straightforward system in DD2. I get the devs probably just wanna do their own unique things, but I don't see a problem with echoing romance systems of other games in the genre. Limit us to a handful of important characters, have the romance play out via dialogue and quests with them, and make it crystal clear where we stand with each character. Not everything has to be a complicated system that we're stumbling into completely blind.
😏and the most important question of all... can you get it on with the Sphinx!?
Most important question indeed
That's what I'm saying. PC version is definitely being bought for modding potential lol
Having a more direct descicion about what character to end up with would be ideal, imagine if we are even able to romance some of the villain characters depending on the story.
I hope they do not go with the old "you end up with the most recent NPC you spoke to."
I don't want a repeat of my shock when I found out Fournival was my soul-mate in the previous game even though I gave the ring to Mercedes.
in an ign interview Itsuno pretty much said that they made a yendere protocol. for those not in the know of Japanese culture and anime tropes, yandere is the trope of a crazy obsessive, typically female, love interest in the story. think, one of the most famous of these, Yuno Gasai from Future Diary. in dd2, Itsuno stated that the affinity/relationship system from the first game was returning but also being expanded to not just be relationships NPCs have with the player but also with each other. he went on the say that they would start a literal death match if they caught someone else hanging out with you or returning from it while they were on their way to do the same. sane people would assuming this is someone they are already enemies with, worrying you will side against them in a key decision or something, but he never said that. he said, in his hypothetical scenario that it would result in the 2 characters fighting to the death unless you manage to stop them by begging them not to fight over you. this is Itsuno's dream game since he was in school so... we've seen similar insanity before. Hideo Kojima, with no one holding him back since he owned the developer studio, had you pissing on mushrooms and using piss grenades on eldritch monsters. while i don't think Itsuno is that insane, this game will show us just how wacky a man he is when given a team of kindred spirits to help him live out his dream. him saying that they spent long hours coming up with interactions kind of gave me the vibe of a man who follows the sacred rule of table top "if you make the dm laugh, he has to make what you said real in the game no matter how insane it is." i'm loving this lmao. more detailed romance was also in a document of concepts and scrapped ideas, the old stuff that had you teleport to the moon to turn it back on so it wouldn't stand still but truly orbit for the purpose of shifting the tides to give you access to the final dungeon with the senechal. in that the moon was a dungeon too.
problem with that, if you only focus on affinity with 1 person you are missing out, shops will get more/rare items in stock with higher affinity. at least, that's how it was in the original
Can we rizz the Sphinx?
Best question of them all
If it does return, I hope is that it's not mandatory this time around. I like a good romance, but I want that to be a choice rather than a requirement.
Very goof thing to mention - what if you don't want to romance someone. In DD1 you're just given someone at the end, regardless of your choice.
If you think about going back to DD1, your beloved can also be based on your choice. So I am sure what you mean is you hope DD2 lets choose who you want as your beloved just like in DD1.
@@hp2546No, what we mean is is that romance should be an option, not a must. In DD1, you had to have a beloved to progress, regardless if you want to engage with romance or not. As popular as romance is in RPGs, not everyone is interested in the feature, either because they find the available romantic choices lacking or are not interested in romance in general (i.e being Aromantic). That's why I hope in DD2, having a beloved is not a requirement as it was in DD1.
I remember having to unsheath my weapon over and over to lower affection to not get other people to be my beloved. 😂 One particular person I did let like, I casted the tornado spell and watched them fly. No offense to them … I just didn’t want to have that particular romance. 😅
About to end up with Caxton again. "They masterworks, all. You can't go wrong".
I do hope to romance Wilhelmina during my first playthrough. I can decide whom should I romance during my second playthrough.
who cares.. why does it matter?
Now I know that her name is Wilhelmina. When I looked at her in summer 2023, I thought she was the adult version of Selene because she dresses up in black, her hair is black, and she has an almost similar appearance as Selene. I thought that might be Selene who managed to turn taller. I mean if Selene did lose her pawn powers, she should be able to age like a normal human. Turned out her name is not Selene. Her name is Wilhelmina.
As much as I loved this first game's wonky romance system back in the day, because it was hilarious, I do hope they refine it this time around. I thought the option to pretty much romance anyone was cool, and I liked how it tied into the story. But seriously, please no possible child romances in DD2!
I did not know that basically, what you're saying is, even if romance isn't a priority for us (as for me because I just want to get through the game for the lor before getting to DD2), you are forced to have someone by the end of the game? That sounds extremely annoying and not at all something I'm into. I like the idea of being able to romance any npc but ninja-mancing me is not is not a fun way to go about it. I am still trying to figure out where to go next, I'm not thinking about who to romance lol
1:37 Yeah, it totally came as a surprise, i didn't know i had a love interest XD
Super excited to play this game man. Getting it day 1!
I can't imagine them keeping it the same after all the complaints and controversy. Or at least, I'd hope they cut off the more awkward or problematic matches this time.
I really hope it doesn't work like the first one and is more explicit lol let the player activley choose who to romance
Honestly, the romance system sounds awful, hope they go with something normal for DD2
With my luck I’ll wind up with the blacksmith again like I did in the first game.
Honestly swap out the max favobiliry of the ring for a lock in slot. Like no character take priority of this one with the ring in terms of romance. So you can really lock in what you want.
I had my eyes on Brant originally, then I watched some gameplay of Ulrika taking care of the arisen and just adorably smiling into the camera.
Yeaaah.. XD I hope we can choose this time. I did get the romance I wanted in DDDA but it was kinda nerve wrecking as I had seen so many people getting Feste or Symone as beloved.. XD
I was waiting for this🤔
if you preorder dragons dogma 2 deluxe edition there is a gift you can give someone in the deluxe package you get so ya
The Arisen's Bond might not be back but the Heartfelt Pendant from the deluxe edition might take it's place.
What they should have is a DTR (define the relationship) moment at some point in the game. You can spend some time talking to/flirting/gifting several people, but at some point you need to commit. Perhaps giving the ring like in DD1, but in DD2 it locks that person in for your one romance partner from that point forward.
I'm currently playing through DD1 for the first time and I honestly have no idea who to romance because several of the NPCs feel bland. I'm only about 30 hours in though, so that may change as it goes.
Of course I want to romance the Elf I've seen, hopefully it's more fleshed out as in the first Game :)
I romanced the Princess in my first play through because I had a feeling giving gifts had a point, so I just kept giving her stuff 😊 I’m hoping for family mechanics in DD2 ❤
Caxton is the peak romance option in DD. Masterworks all, you can't go wrong. I should GoOooOOOooOO
They already told us, you can romance characters, they can romance you, they can even romance each other.
well lucky for me,😅
I managed to romance one of the female bandits (Tilda) in Heavenspeak Fort😁
You can romance the bandit?!
Man I am playing DD1 at the moment for the first time and I'm now scared to end up with that merchant dude or the innkeeper dude in Gran Soren. I interact with them the most. If the dragon kidnaps either of them, I'm shutting down the game and just gonna ignore the final.
I would hope DD2 even allows the arisen to become homewreckers. In DD1, my arisen would prefer to choose an NPC that is already married. For example, in the 1st playthrough, I steal Mayra's husband which makes my arisen the mistress. That will make my arisen bisexual because she had previously had sex with Aelinore. Then on the next playthrough, I steal Merin's wife. That will make my arisen a lesbian and make Mayra bisexual. In DD1, Mayra and Merin is also considered to be the arisen's next door neighbor. They even have a son. Best of all, even if any of them cheat, they still consider each other spouses. If I steal Mayra's husband, Merin will still call Mayra his wife in the post game. If I steal Merin's wife, Mayra will still call Merin her husband. This proves that every married couples in Cassardis is ok with open marriage.
But can you romance anyone regardless of gender like in bg3. If not then that would be a huge bummer.
No Fournival please....
speaking of revealing things in marketing material, you can tell by the lack of it for gear customization that the reduction to only 4 slots compared to 7 is something they're not proud of. I have a feeling the esg department for capcom made gear layering a bit difficult so they went for a more reductive system. It's a bit of a shame because I loved the system of the original.
I did not like how your paramour in Dragon’s Dogma was essentially a stalker. Sure you were nice to them, but you had no plans to start a relationship with.
I kind of hope not. In the first game it was awful...SO awful.
Even Twilight had a better love story than Dark Arisen. Lol
wilhelmina a baddie
Sooo i bought this on sale for 5 bucks to try. Was this a mistake? Lmao
If you mean DD1, then it just depends how long your game can last. Buying a preowned game for 5 bucks means there may come a time where that CD won't last and you may be forced to buy a brand new one. I remember when I brought it for 5 bucks, my DD1 game only lasted for 1 year. That game eventually freezes to a point where the game can no longer be turned on. I had to buy a new one from Amazon. If you buy it in person, just make sure your game can handle old games and make sure your game does not freeze.
What if I want to romance both ladies? Capcom need that option. Lol Like Yennefer and Trisha in Witcher 3. They need more romance to avail
Just like in DD1, an arisen have options to romance both ladies if the arisen were to choose another woman. I know in DD1, the arisen's first romance in Duchess in Distress can be a one night stand where that romance is casual. Then the next person the arisen romance will be the one he/she marries and it will be their choice. I don't know if you meant being able to have sex with more then 1 NPC in DD2, but that could be a good example of romancing both ladies in DD1.
Since you have a name that is 007, that is what James Bond would of done. He would make sure he have a chance to romance multiple women. I am even going to bet when you played DD1, you must of decided to romance Aelinore and then choose another woman for romancing.
Can i romance young Pip still?
I will take it that every character in DD2 may not even be the same person. In DD1, Pip was a 13 year old boy. I don't think anyone is expected to see the adult version of Pip.
honestly, this is a bad system, if it only included your companions it would be ok, but merchants ? thats bad in every way, both in a gameplay point of view and in a immersion point a view, people you only had casual business conversations becomeming the love of you life...
It's called Rizz. It's can happen in real life too. Chill😂
The fact that it includes the merchants is what makes it hilarious
Bro you are the arisen are you stupid? You gotta get fournival😭
I just hope we can rizz up our pawns this time 🤷
@@iblitz6307pawns doesn't have feelings and human necessities.
Before i even consider finding love i wish to first talk about something more important that ruined the privious game for me what i truly want is revenge on our pawn from the previous game God i hated so much the so called "good ending"that ending is bad ending for us only good for the pawn the ending of dragon dogma 1 with you die and the pawn becomes your clone and steal your love and your identity and all your riches and fame and impostering to being you that was really shity and really felt like the worst kind of betrayal hell our pawn even stolen our armour in the water and left our dead body in the sea on purpose without proper burial that why the pawn wears the same armour as us armour as he wakes up on the beach even though i gave my pawn completely different armour.
the main pawn is a scambeg traitor of the worst kind and don't give me the excuses of the pawn becomes you its his nature that is bullshit even if he looked like me doesn't mean he couldn't tell Mercedes or Elanore the truth that he is the pawn and don't start with the bullshit of the pawn not being aware of him being the pawn because you can see his sad face when Quina unlike the others recognize that he is not us and see throw his bluff the romance is important but first before any romance i want revenge and i want to know that this time the true ending is not including our main pawn steal all we holds dear.
It is Quina and Selene who will be able to tell a difference between the real and the fake. So it is not just Quina that will recognize. It will also be Selene.
This game will only hit 30 fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S and wont allow multiple save files... Yeahhh im good, and before you comment "bUt HuMaNs CaNt EvEn SeE 6o FrAmEs PeR sEcOnD" feel free to get fcķèd 😂 They are charging $70 for a game that cant run at a decent frame rat
lmfao get a PC, console peasant.
I dont want any fkn romance in my games. Leave your house and get some. What a sad state
Remember my first beloved was Julien but I wanted Mercades it was sad I beat his ass everytime he respawned
You should of just let Julien beat Mercedes and then it is guaranteed that Julian will not have any affinity for you. Once Julien beats Mercedes, Julien will leave town dissapointed and will want his solitude life. If you beat Julien and revived him, you potentially win his heart. He is thankful that you saved him and will even be willing to turn himself in to show respect to the arisen.
