The normal protagonist would tell Raphtalia to run away immediately, and even when she asked about their own safety, the protagonist would say something like "Don't worry. I won't die." even if their chance of death was almost certain. But what did Naofumi do? Stage 1: He's in a pickle and he asks her to stab the monster with the dagger, quickly. What does she say. *No.* Stage 2: He tries to put her in a situation where she can't refuse, with the words "If I die, you'll die too." The response is once again, *no.* Stage 3: He repeats what he said first, along with "this is an order," which puts her in enough pain for tears. This is something that the normal protag would never do. Naofumi does NOT want to die and he's willing to go to these lengths to preserve both of their lives. You know what comes next. *no.* Stage 4: She's a small girl. Tears are streaming down her face. She takes a step back. Naofumi is still human and even if he can't save both of their lives... he can at least save one. "Raphtalia, forget it. If you can't fight, then get out of here." Stage 5: She asks him, "But what about you?" He doesn't lie and give her a false sense of security. "I'll buy you time to escape." Extras: "Hurry up and go!" and later on "Well done." "Get off already....*sigh*" I've been rambling but I really love how they wrote this character, especially in this scene. If you've read this far then thank you!
What I like about it as well, as, you could also take it that, he's manipulating her, emotionally, to attack the dog... Like, you can take all sorts of perspectives about it

@@FF18Cloud that's because they didn't show his thoughts in that moment like in the manga, he realised he was forcing her into a bad situation and decided he would protect her, he later decides to raise her in her dead parents' stead and sees her as a daughter while she has romantic feelings for him (demi humans such as her don't grow up by age, their bodies grow up the more levels they have, so, she will unlock her adult form fast, Naofumi still sees her as a daughter regardless, he only keeps the slave seal because thanks to Bitc... i mean, Myne he got a slaver shield that gives exp boosts to anyone registered in his party as a servant, since his mission is to save the world and they have to be in top form when the waves hit he decides to be pragmatic in that issue.)
+Alejandro Tapia they also didn't reveal that he pretty much had a mental breakdown and can't feel the taste of food and doesn't realise Raphtalia grew until she comforts him and reassures him she never believed the rumors about him since: a. Demi humans appreciate the shield hero because all shield heroes treat her people right b. She knows him and despite being bitter he treats her better than anyone barring her parents treated her, it is too late however as because of Myne and Motoyasu being a lecherous dumbass his perspective of the world is a little better but his rage evolves to wrath against the kingdom, against Myne and all her family and he unlocks the cursed series of his weapon, the black shield in the opening is a direct result of this.
For those who dont know why Raphtalia got more EXP, Naofumi unlock Slaver Shield by absorbing Ink+Blood Mix in Slaver Shop. It provide stat Buff and +EXP gain for Slaves in Party.
Actually it's because (discussed in the light novel) that the person who lands the killing blow gains the majority of the EXP (Edit and somewhat spoiler) Though the slave user shield does comes after with the effects like you mentioned

it's because it's perfectly directed. with the way the snippets go by so quickly (usually animes give you enough time to process what you're seeing) it gives the viewer just as much confusion and anxiety as raphtalia would have in the heat of the moment

What gets me sad about this scene is that when Raphtalia sees her parents leaving, they're smiling, because they showed her how much they loved her even in their final moments. But when she sees Naofumi leaving, he has a stone straight almost disappointed face, as if that's what she imagines he would be like if she failed him and let him die by not being able to help.

This scene holds so much dramatic weight. I already liked the manga a lot, but the anime has shown that it will become even better in adapting the source material.
I'm surprised that no one has re-dubbed Naofumi being falsely accused in Ep. 1 with Asusagawa Sakuta screaming, "I'm a virgin!" I mean, it's the same VA, right? hahah

In the anime, the situation is even worse. Raphtalia broke her sword, Naophumi is bleeding at death, with more than an arm wounded, and she finally find the courage to go against the monster, and stab the two heads with the separated parts of her swords, multiple times, until it die. The scene still looks very cool in the anime!
One episode in and she is a way more wholesome situation of the subhu- i mean laguz from FE: Path Of Radiance. Both are discriminated by humans to the point that they are used as slaves and they are considered vastly inferior to humans (half humans in one case, subhumans in the other). In other words, protecc with Great Shield.
