We are the Patagonia of the north...Aylmer lake lodge is a big place with a widely varying water of every type imaginable. This means that anglers that finally make the pilgrimage to the Northwest Territory we are often refered by clients as the Patagonia of the north we are located on the barrenlands. Many fly fishers head to the east part of the NWT barrenlands to fish sprawling freestoners evocative of back-home rivers in places like Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho, where bushy, foam terrestrial patterns and dry-dropper rigs are the name of the game for big lake trout and massive arctic grayling. Anglers that love fishing big, articulated streamers will often opt for the un-named rivers that rush northward towards the Arctic Ocean, in search of the aggressive, predatory lake trout that prowl these waters. Those that live for technical fishing, for targeting individual, rising trout with diminutive mayflies often travel north to some of the NWT region's most remote area like Aylmer Lake, where un-named rivers and creek fishing predominates.
Just picture this, what it would be like to hook a huge lake trout in 2-5 ft. of water, that’s right you read it right in 2-5 ft of arctic water.
Well, the answer is quite simple. It’s absolutely achievable and a amazing experience!!! Never mind fishing under the northern lights.
From mid August through the first couple of weeks of September you will see huge female lakers move to very shallow rocky reefs and points in anticipation of their yearly spawn.
These lake trout are displaying their full fall spawning colors that can only be seen during this time of year. When you hook one it is like a hooking a rocket and they will absolutely crush the lure or fly presentation that catches their attention. Whether you are using a dry mice fly or large spoons, the results are the same, catching huge lake trout. #aylmerlakelodge
We have yet to find a spoon that is too big for these monsters, and a Lemon Lime Diamond is as good a spoon as any.
