  • Episode 30: Chronic Kidney Disease Treatment: How I increased my GFR & improved my kidney function Part 1. Just 6 months ago today I was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease stage 5 and was told there was "Zero" chance of improving kidney function and that there was nothing I could do to lower my creatinine levels and increase my GFR. The doctors had no recommended chronic kidney disease recovery treatment for me - only dialysis. The doctors where wrong! In just 6 months I have changed my life and increased my GFR, lowered my creatinine levels, and improved my kidney function from Stage 5 to Stage 3. In this video, part 1 of 2, I share what I feel are the 10 most impactful things that helped me improve my kidney function, lower my creatinine level, and avoid dialysis. Let this video inspire you to take an active role in your kidney disease treatment and push for better care. Let me help you in your chronic kidney disease stage 5 recovery!

    1. Built an amazing health team.
    The first part of a good kidney disease treatment program is building a health team. My #1 support is not my Nephrologist - it is my Primary Care Physician. He is very positive, straight forward, and is there to help me get better. My Nephrologist mostly keeps an eye on my improvements, but really gives me little support or details. My Endocrinologist and Urologist have put my worries to rest of other serious issues. My Dietitian is the #2 player in my team. She is amazing at listening and giving me real advice - including exactly HOW to do things. I had to go through a lot of others to get this team built, but strong communication and a dedication to getting better like no other has been critical.
    2. Manage my blood pressure
    I made this a priority. It took some trial and error, but I take my blood pressure at home multiple times a day and pushed my doctors to change my meds quickly if I didn’t see positive results. It took about 1 month to find the right combo of kidney friendly meds to get my blood pressure down to under 130/80 consistently.
    3. Eat a low inflammation kidney friendly diet.
    Check out my video on how to shop for foods at the grocery store and download my list of low inflammation kidney friendly foods that I eat. The list is pretty massive - the largest I’ve ever seen. Yet it is missing a number of foods you may have heard are ok to eat which I have not included in my diet. Such as potatoes - even leaching potatoes is not acceptable to me. Following this renal diet and never cheating got me from Stage 5 to Stage 3 in about 5 months. At stage 3 I modified my diet - it is a different strategy to get from Stage 5 to 3 than going from Stage 3 to 2. I also strongly encourage everyone to see a Renal Dietitian. They will customize your diet and set the daily min and max for key nutrients like Water, Calories, Protein, Potassium, Phosphorous, Calcium, and Sodium.
    4. Used supplements to support my body.
    The word “supplement” scares a lot of people because they don’t understand the word, but supplements are a key part of my kidney disease treatment program. There are good and bad supplements. The ones which have really helped me the most are Fiber supplements (like Benefiber and Chitosan capsules), Vitamin D3, Vitamins B6 and B12, Omega 3, and a lot of other vitamins and minerals. As the right balance was figured out, I was able to replace a lot of different tablets with less - mostly thanks to a Renal Multivitamin called Pro-Renal+D w/Omega3. I also take CoQ10 to support my heart and blood pressure.
    5. Avoided things which could slow or stop my recovery
    I removed all NSAIDs from the house and only take medications or supplements approved by my health team. I drink plenty of water - started out at ½ my body weight in ounces and adjusted as I lost weight. Avoided all sodas and juices - I stuck with only drinking water from Stage 5 to 3. At stage 3 I added 1 small cup of coffee in the morning without any additives except MCT oil. I avoided all Artificial ingredients, preservative, and I read all food labels for everything I purchased. I stopped eating out except for an occasional treat and always stuck to the diet.

As a diabetic for the last 35 years I manage quite well on low carbs now but had not been aware of the painkillers, and I fact had recommended paracetamol to help with gout pain (not aspirin).

      @DADVICETV  3 года назад +4

      You can do it! The higher your GFR, the easier it is to increase it with diet and lifestyle changes. Be careful with focusing too much on your GFR - it's just a measurement and really is very general. Focus on how you feel, how your blood pressure is, and things related to your health. You won't notice a different between GFR 80 and GFR 50 - it really isn't until your GFR is fairly low that issues start appearing.

    Very wonderful resource from a kind heart. Very grateful to you! I have had a bizarre history since i noticed i had slipped to efgr59. I knew it was on account of my BP as i had known of the relationship. Immediately, i started taking lots of water and it shot up to 62. Unfortunately, my physician just said everything was normal so i wasnt paying too much attention. Just last year February, i did my annual meds and realised it efgr was 55. Started searching for remedies with more water and green tea and guess what, a repetition of my meds just last week saw my efgr at around 35. Very significant drop. Now, i have just changed my BP drugs and going to follow a strict regimen on food. I am inspired by your videos that if there is the will and with a great deal of luck, it can be overcome so much. Thank You

    Omg, I just discovered your videos and after watching them I feel so much better. My mother's doctor just told her that her creatinine is at 1.4 and it is not good. Right now I am stressing out. Your video really helps me to believe that there are things I could do. I believe that her creatinine is this high because she had been sick for a long time so all she eats are blended meat mixed with rice porridges every day. I think the protein is causing her level to be this high. She doesn't have any fibers in her diet which I will start incorporating after watching your videos.

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  5 лет назад +5

      Ace - glade you found my channel. You mom is actually very lucky to discover her Kidney issues so early. Being sick will also throw off her test and most people start to see decreased kidney function as they get older. I'm sure her doctor will recommend a change in her diet. It will seem a little extreme at first, but she'll get used to it and find lots of great alternatives. After just a few months I no longer missed the old foods that were the key staples of my unhealthy diet (like Big Macs, French Fries, Ice Cream, etc.). I'm just a few minutes away from uploading Part 2 of what I feel were the most important things to improve my health - check it out and I'm sure you'll find more helpful information. Good luck and it really warms my heart that you are concerned and helping your mom! There is so much conflicting (and bad) info out there and having someone help is amazing!

    I am not sure why you are more concerned about potassium than phosphorous, and why you are worried about potatoes but not meat. Dropping meat is probably the best thing you can do to avoid causing further damage (Although it is actually meat plus inflammation, probably. Since meat causes inflammation this distinction might be moot). Especially avoid meats that come with lots of preservatives like hot dogs and sliced lunch meats. I agree with you about ibuprofen. If you need this sort of pain relief, a better alternative is a shot of tart cherry juice. If you need it because of workout muscle pains, consider eating watermelon.
    If I am wrong about potatoes I would love to see the studies demonstrating this. I always want to get better.
    Edit. It should also be noted that French Fries have 3 times as many calories as baked potatoes by weight, so are not what is being discussed here.

The Drs here in my country, are only interested in getting rid of you as fast as possible & are not interested in discussing much or helping you get the right treatment or support, etc. It's like a conveyer belt system, in, out, neeeeeext! Kaching! Done. They're just not interested. And they get very irritated & impatient and act insulted when you question them. And I can't afford private Drs & private care/treatments. Specially can't afford a dietician!! How am I ever going to get better?? My egfr fluctuates. One month it will be 63 and then 6 months later its 83. What do you think this means? My albumin, protein, BUN, Calcium levels are normal, but my creatinine is a tad high at 136. I had high blood pressure a few years ago and I had bad kidney stones last summer that completely shut off both my kidneys until I was hospitalized.

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  5 лет назад

      +RubberWilbur I am not a doctor, but hydration plays a big roll in your labs. Just being slightly dehydrated, having a higher muscle mass, and having done some exercise can all increase your creatinine levels. Creatinine is also added in a variety of supplements to help build muscles. Your primary care physician should be able to help narrow down the cause. It never hurts to eat a balanced and healthy diet - avoiding things which can harm your kidneys. Your GFR will also decrease with age.

    My brother is stage 5 and 10% function. They are talking about starting the process of dialysis and putting in the port today. After watching many of your videos, I am trying to convince him not to do it

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  3 месяца назад

      If your brothers eGFR decline over time to 10%, then it may be time to consider having an access installed so that he ready for dialysis when needed. The latest recommendations are to start dialysis around eGFR 5, unless there are other risk factors that cannot be addressed by medication. While diet and lifestyle changes along with managing blood pressure and blood sugar can help slow the progression of kidney disease in most people, with your brothers low kidney function. It may be too late to slow the progression. If your brother’s dropping kidney function is sudden, have him ask his doctor if this may just be an AKI in which he may be able to recover without dialysis to a higher kidney function or may only need dialysis for a short amount of time. It is difficult when the kidney function is so low since symptoms become present and time is not on your side. For me, I have been very lucky the last 5 1/2 years to get up to stage three and now I teeter on the border of stage three and stage four, with absolutely no symptoms now. My doctors believe I had an AKI on top of CKD which drove my kidney function down into the single digits Due to dehydration.

I take a regimine of meds daily and watch my diet for phosphorus and potassium. I also take binders for those. If I was stricter like you said could my numbers improve. My labs are high creatinine and low GFR but I’m stable for all this time. I’d love to get to stage 3,and be off some of these meds. Can it be done. I lost my right kidney 3 years ago due to an infection and I had PKD but didn’t know it for years. I had no symptoms.

      Just in case you didn't see my response on another thread, I'm going to paste my response here in addition:
      The most impactful and critical thing I did to improve my kidney health has been working with a renal dietitian and STICKING to what they recommend. A Renal dietitian is a life changer for many with CKD - if there is the possibility of improving, they are one of the best to help. A renal dietitian can also help with how to eat at places like Subway and other quick serve restaurants. Is your mom working with a renal dietitian? Are there things you can do to help her stay on her diet? I'm pretty good with my diet, but if the kids leave snacks laying around, it's hard to fight to temptation. It may be helpful to remove all the foods which are not good for her and make sure she is stocked up on a variety of good foods for her diet (based on what the renal dietitian recommends).

    • @richard5981
      @richard5981 4 года назад

      Dadvice TV - Kidney Health Coach Thank you I appreciate your advice very much. I’m going to follow The steps I seen insome of your videos and ask her doctor for a Renal dietitian hopefully it’s not too late and she could stay off of dialysis. She doesn’t have any snacks Near her The only time she ate junk food was when the refrigerator was broke down we eat out a couple days and she had a couple of tuna sandwiches during the two days. But her diet usually consisted of fish and red meat such as steak from what I seen in your videos it seems like it’s better to go to a vegetable diet with some fish and chicken because that will put less stress on the kidneys. What I did discover is one of her favorite soups had a lot of sodium in it. So I decided to remove that soup from her diet. I’m also making sure she drinks more water. Hopefully she could increase her renal function back to 27 near 30. I’ll keep watching your videos. you always give great
