After nine regular season events, the Lexus WSL Finals brings the top 5 men and top 5 women in professional surfing to Lower Trestles for a one-day, winner-take-all, showdown for the coveted title of World Champion. From Pipeline and Portugal to Teahupo’o and Cloudbreak, it has been a hard fought season for the world’s best surfers. Ten surfers enter, and only two will emerge as Champions and add their name to the legacy of the sport.
This September, current world No. 1 John John Florence will be making his first appearance at Lower Trestles as a World Title contender. Caitlin Simmers, in only her sophomore season as a CT athlete, will be making her second run at a World Title while also donning the Yellow Leader Jersey. Meanwhile, world No. 2 and defending champion Caroline Marks will be back in front of her home crowd to defend her World Title.
Tour veterans will battle a new generation of talent for the World Title this September at Lower Trestles. History will be made, and legacies will be defined.

If I could vote on it, I would still prefer the old year long champion but I do think a Tournament of Champions would be ideal topper for big bonus at Lowers. JJF proved he is a champion once again, no matter what happens next week. I like the big waves and power surfing the dream tour can provide and a world champion of all conditions. Thanks WSL for bringing it to us. T
Best thing about the Florence’s is they are mad cool in person.
Add everybody scores even though it's subjective, over the year and see who wins. Why does somebody in 5th place get an opportunity to win when somebody else has been better all year. Oh I forgot sponsors, and money, y'all don't actually care who the winner is.

I like John, great surfer, but being an Aussie I would like to see Jack or Ethan win the title. Frankly I think these 2 are surfing the best right now. All Aussie final!
This stupid scoring system sucks! Whoever has the most points at the end of the year is the winner.

To get here they had to prove themselves at Pipe, Chopes and Cloudbreak. Let's hope for some proper Lowers so now the best at mixing above the lip skills and carving rail game combos will prove who indeed is best overall, and this a worthy world champ. The goal of the final 5 format is to draw intrigue to the final event, love it or hate on it it does just that.

Fairness will be achieved whenever judges will score a ride without knowing what other judges are scoring for that same ride. Feels very coordinated at times
Im a JJF fan but this mid year cut / final 5 system is the worst thing to happen to surfing
I'll be rooting for JJF but if betting I like Ewing on a squash in small lowers. His style through the sown sections will make a big difference for the judges.
JJ should already have the title in my opinion. I personally don't understand or care for this format.
Also John pls do a carving roundhouse 360 a move no one but Kelly tries, you do it and win the title...🙃
I don't agree with anything with how subjective the judges are. Every wave every break do it like golf. Just like Scottie scheffler said I hate the format in golf. I won seven times And a gold medal. Who was better than me. Same thing with John John. Add all his scores on his waves and compare them to the added scores of the other competitors who was better. I hate sports with judges.
Surely you can contemplate the difference between golf and surfing. Of course there's no way to have a surfing contest w/out judges lol... but nonetheless, I think your point is that you don't like the format with this s t u p I d grand finale, and I agree.

Sorry to say but the finals event does not show who is the best surfer. John John is the champ!!! Carissa Moore got robbed 2x. Bring back the old format please.

Think about it, best two waves no time limit. If that's it in the Olympics came through 2 minutes earlier John would have destroyed Jack Robinson because he's the best backside barrel rider in the world. But you score people on nothing.
Funny how uninteresting the world title has become with the change of format, no triple crown, etc. The WSL has become irrelevant. Who stole the soul?
This method is terrible
The upcoming event should be cancelled as there is no waves of consequences, but waves for clown show. WSL shouldn’t make and event under were the waves are head or overhead size.
Yeah I'm good I am not a fanboy. I hope a lot of these guys go back to free surfing and doing their own videos.

Final 5 format sucks. Its the worst way to decide a world champ, at the shittest wave on tour. Makes no sense and all the other surfers I know say the same thing
