Thanks for a great tutorial. Clear, concise, to the point. Better than most out there! Added bonus is you're broadcasting from my old stomping grounds... Barnegat Bay! Great spot. Enjoy!
I have the same setup and love it. I saw the ZM-2 in your older videos, did some research and bought it about a year ago. Its extremely good and I've made a lot of contacts using it. It does a fantastic job tuning almost anything. Thanks for the vid Alan!!
Thanks. I bought one of these to go with my LNR Precision Mountain Topper QRP transceiver, based on this review.. Although I do have a Yaesu FT 817ND rig, this tuner seems to fit well with all the components to build a portable station mounted on a clip board. Total weight for the complete station, including antenna and 1,600 MaH battery pack is less than the FT 817 alone. Great tuner and great review. 73, K7SFA.
whoa- a flash. my grandparents had a beach house at beach haven crest. bought ~ 1950. it is still in the family. oh. the emtech- nice vid! going in the shopping basket.
Well done vid. Short/Concise/To the point. I bought this ATU in early 2020 and have only played with it a little. Was very impressed then but also with the many positive reviews. Good vid. Tnx......
Thanks for the feedback on Facebook regarding my build. I have actually seen this video before it was part of my initial research and was one of the videos that prompted me to build the design. I didn't video my build as my workshop is very cramped but to share my progress with club mates via pictures. Thumbs up.
Excellent explanations dear OM. Even if we are not the best in English we understand very well how to tune. I ordered my ZM-2 and am looking forward to it. 73 - F5NFB / Jo.
Great video. Very informative. I really like that little tuner. I think it's great that they provided a tune position with the use of the toggle switch. It's a well thought out tuner. I wish they would have used BNC's instead of SO 239's. I always use RG 174 with BNC's on the ends. Barry, KU3X
Well Done Alan, yes for years now been using that setup Ft817nd with ZM2 great tuner matches about every thing.I was hoping to see the Antenna you was using ? I carry the MP-1 in a Chimerical made pack for the radio had for years also, its a Backpack type that allows you to fasten a antenna on the pack like the MP-1 and ham stick foubnd times had to drag a counter poise lol lol In walking PED Mobile ""HFPacks" My operation QRP did not have the great places you have tho !!lol lol I also put on the Voltage control unit on the Pwr input ? 12v to 9V usage, you will see not much in RF different But saves the Battery Life .Thanks for the Effort of Qrping Alan . 73's
Nice! I'm afraid for how much of this knowledge has been and will be lost in the future (specifically on how to BUILD stuff like this). We have Internet now but that may not and probably will not always be the case. Radio skills should be taught in school like how to cook. It's fundamental to survival.
haha! grew up on 30th st in Beach Haven Gardens - dated the mayor's daughter and took her to her prom... now i couldn't even afford a week's stay on the beach...
Some antennas (verticals for example) use ground as a counterpoise, while other antennas are balanced and don't need to have one side of the feed grounded (dipoles for example).
@@somersetlevellersmtb5564 Put it in the ground position to connect the black BNC to the ground of the input coax. Use this when driving a vertical or end-fed wire antenna. When driving a balanced antenna like a dipole, switch it away from ground.
According to the service manual, that error code refers to a Ch1 Output Offset Calibration failure. I've never worked on one of these, so I don't know how to calibrate or repair one.
I've got several of the Par antennas,so I can use this video as my reference. Thanks for producing a video that offers clarity on the ZM-2 tuning procedures.
DC means that the frequency range extends all the way to DC, 0Hz. The usefulness is that the frequency coverage includes very low frequencies, so things like vibration analysis and sub-audible signals can be observed. This also brings a precaution too - because there will be a specification of the maximum DC voltage that can be applied to the input - do NOT exceed this, or you can do very expensive damage to the input. You must make sure that your signal's DC offset doesn't exceed this value.

All of your tutorials are logical and well planned. And very enjoyable as well as informative. Thanks for uploading! 73 de KT1R Lou in Maine
Thanks for this! I just put together a ZM-2 and wasn't sure how to work it.

Neat little tunier Alan. Tanks for sharing. Also enjoy your vacation.

Barry - they do sell a version with BNC instead of the SO-239s
Plus I live and die by adaptors. With a half dozen of those I don't have to worry about the fact that half ham equipment is UHF and the other is BNC.
Looks nice and relaxing! Neat tuner.
I have one of these arriving today..... Pre Built, of course. N1JWW

fuck off ye fanny !
A small question - does it make sense to reduce the power from 10W to 1W during tuning to save resource or does this tuner make no difference?
Even though the tune position keeps the SWR
Ground or Link for random length of wire? Thank you.

good job nice antenna turner 73
Can you explain the link/Ground switch please?
Some antennas (verticals for example) use ground as a counterpoise, while other antennas are balanced and don't need to have one side of the feed grounded (dipoles for example).
w2aew sorry new to the hobby, so when in Ground position, and when in Link?

Hi Alan i have a Tektronix AFG3021 that shows a Calibration Error as 1103,0. what does it mean Thanks
According to the service manual, that error code refers to a Ch1 Output Offset Calibration failure. I've never worked on one of these, so I don't know how to calibrate or repair one.
Do you have any advise for me
Thanks
Nothing beyond consulting the service manual:

It seems that i will sell it (As Is or For Parts or Not Working) in eBay
Thanks Alan
3:36 - you don't worry about your coax being tangled up? I mean coax with less shielding. And it is Zed! ;-) Just as in Zed Zed Top!
It's usually not that tangled, I was just in a hurry to do the video before the sun came around the house.
What antenna were you actually tuning up with the ZM-2?
It is an end-fed half-wave triband antenna by Par Electronics.
I've got several of the Par antennas,so I can use this video as my reference. Thanks for producing a video that offers clarity on the ZM-2 tuning procedures.
What type of antenna was you using? Thanks
End-fed half-wave wire, with matching transformer at feedpoint.

Hi Alan what is the use of DC in spectrum analyzer
I'm not sure I understand your question.
What i mean is that there is some spectrum analyzer goes from DC to 3Ghz what dose DC means in this situation
Thanks

Doesnt that rig have a built in tuner already?
No, the FT-817 does not have a built in tuner. My *other* QRP rig, the Icom IC-703 does, but not this rig.
twin capacitors and no inductor?
Yes - it's an interesting design - check out the links in the video description.
its the ZM-4 ATU nowadays .. and its WAAAAAY too expensive for a kit !
