    Metroid Other M receives a seemingly endless overabundance of flack from its narrative, but *HOLY SHIT* the graphics are on a completely different level that more people need to discuss. As well as the 3D animations in and outside of cutscenes. _Clearly_ the right people were hired for that job and it is amazing. Hire a better script writer and the game would be pretty ok if you ask me.

    I feel like I'm in the minority in not caring about a game's graphics. In fact, when games are advertised as having the most realistic graphics to date, that usually tells me that less time was put into other aspects of the game in order to make it look the way it does. There's a reason I find myself playing more and more older titles and fewer modern games. I've been going through the Ultima games recently, and I find these titles (at least, starting with Quest of the Avatar) far more engaging than the high majority of modern games, despite their dated graphics and UI.
    The one exception, though, is when games do something unique with their art style. The art design of games like Cuphead, Odin Sphere, and Yoshi's Island have such a timeless quality that will never age, but, even then, those games have plenty of other great aspects that make them into outstanding games. All in all, graphics are never the priority (or even a secondary consideration) for the games I buy.

    • @Shantae1188
      @Shantae1188 6 месяцев назад +3

      I am kinda in the same boat. I kinda prefer my games to not go full realism because it just seems distracting.

    • @AoiLucine
      @AoiLucine 6 месяцев назад +3

      Stylization over realism, basically.

    • @thecrispymaster
      @thecrispymaster 6 месяцев назад +2

      I think there is a difference between "realistic" graphics and "good" graphics, though, and graphics that aren't good can severely hamper the experience of playing the game. Things like enemy projectiles being too indistinct to make make out against the background, poor telegraphing in an action platformer on what's a grab-able ledge and what's just pretty wall or a draw distance that actively hampers your ability to react to obstacles in a reasonable time are what would classify as "bad graphics". And it's worth noting that both retro and modern games alike can run afoul of these problems.

    • @rpgfan1187
      @rpgfan1187 6 месяцев назад

      @@thecrispymaster For me, I don't really care whether or not the graphics are realistic. I do agree that it hampers a game when graphics are so terrible that I can't tell what I'm doing or if it messes with the player's depth perception. However, I'm not nearly as bothered by poorly aged graphics as a lot of people seem to be. For instance, Deus Ex is my all-time favorite game (no nostalgia bias for it, either, as I didn't play it until about five years ago), even though the graphics are definitely dated. This also applies to even older titles like the original System Shock from 1994, which is among my top 25 favorite games but would immediately turn most people off with its combination of old 3D graphics and less approachable controls and UI. What I'm trying to say is that graphics have never been a huge factor in my enjoyment of a game. The only exceptions are -- as I mentioned before -- games where the graphics hamper the gameplay or if the graphics are so unique that they stand out from the pack (in which case that's more of a bonus than the selling point for the game).

    Rise of the Robots could be another one that fits this list even if it's from 1994. The Pre-Rendered CG Graphics STILL look impressive today, but the AI SUCKS HARD man... I'm not even good at fighting games and even I Can exploit these opponents. Maybe it can go on a list of Bad Games with Great MUSIC as that's about the only OTHER thing in Rise of the Robots that's good.
    Also I know that this list is about games we should Avoid, but I kinda wanna try out that Deer game now. Even if it's BAD, it still looks up my alley, I can't help myself!

    • @goranisacson2502
      @goranisacson2502 6 месяцев назад

      Man it's been so long I forgot that Rise of the Robots was legitimately considered a graphics showpiece back in the day. I feel like the environments were such grey and black generic nothings that it never really struck me. Pixelated fighting games at the time had such living areas, man even Mortal Kombat with IT'S digitized graphics could still have things going on in the background like the forest with the face-trees... but RotR just had the main robots looking all shiny. I get that a fighting games characters is the main draw, but they overdid them so much that the rest seemed bland. Goes to show that sometimes even when you go all in on what is technically the graphics, you still create something that can look like _nothing_.

    The Division deserves an honorable mention. It wasn't terrible, but it lost 90% of its playerbase within 2 weeks because it wasn't what people expected. It is also the most atmospheric snow setting I've ever experienced in a video game. Which is kind of a shame since I recently played Days Gone and you'd think that all the years of graphical improvements would've made that game's dynamic snow at least as atmospheric as The Division's, but that wasn't the case. In a world where Ubisoft wasn't allergic to taking risks, Massive Entertainment would've been working on a The Division reboot that got people the game they expected to get back in 2016 instead of making a second Avatar game about a second Avatar movie, neither of which anybody cares about. It's kinda like how Raven Software were relegated to the Call of Duty slave pits after Singularity turned out to be a commercial failure, which the second Division game was. I guess Todd Howard really saved Bethesda from becoming one such shovelware slave studio with Morrowind.

    This was a platformer and puzzle game where the protagonist, Abby, is a living marionette, trying to escape the cruel Ringmaster and win her freedom, guided by an interactive narrator who talks in rhyme. Scenery and sprites were beautiful, and the plot could have been made into a great story. The gameplay, however, was far too easy, and the game was too short. Wasted potential, IMOHO.

    Another potential candidate for this list - at least according the franchise's fanbase - would be Gran Turismo 7.
    The Gran Turismo games - particularly since the PS2 era - have consistently been at the forefront of pushing the graphical boundaries of what the console is capable of, and go above and beyond with the levels of detail on display. And GT7 is no exception. It's actually really bizarre how much detail everything has, and how every little detail is considered - especially in the designs of the cars. If you have a VR headset, just take a few moments to play the game in VR mode and explore your virtual cars in your virtual garage. It's incredible!
