Achenseebahn, Austrian Steam Mountain Railway

"Achenseebahn", Achensee Railway is a mountain railway which connect Jenbach to the Achensee Lake, one of the famous lake resort in Tyrol, Austria. This railway is the oldest cog railway still in operation in Europe. Cute steam engine pushes train 440m higher up to the Achensee Lake. The engine is always in downside of the grade, so the car location is changed on the way.

How delightful to see this most idiosyncratic of rack railways still being operated in its usual fashion. It must be 35 years since I last rode on it....Sad to see the graffiti on the otherwise very smart OBB coaches at Jenbach, though. Back in the mid-80s, the local stopping trains were still formed of green four-wheelers with open platforms! (I once spent a week or so commuting from Mayrhofen to Innsbruck, using the Zillertalbahn, OBB trains, and equally-efficient red OBB buses).
