Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane

- Pure romance with no "sleuthin". I have stripped the story of Lord Peter Wimsey's love for Harriet Vane from Strong Poison, Have His Carcass and Gaudy Night. Portrayed by Edward Petherbridge and Harriet Walter, written by Dorothy L. Sayers. With music by Bach of course but also Pachelbel, this is an unashamedly gooey piece of editing on my part:-)
@aussierozzie Thank you for taking the time to write such kind comments. Making this video was pure self indulgence on my part as it was very enjoyable choosing the clips and the music:-)
Too bad no series for the Busman’s Honeymoon 😭. I ♥️ British shows/films.
That was brilliant and not in the least bit gooey. The scenes fit together perfectly and the background music couldn't have been more appropriate. Lord Peter as played by Edward Petherbridge is my idea of the perfect man. I suppose the reason Lord Peter is so appealing is that he was created by a woman. Anyway thank you so much for this great clip.
Beautifully made, what a lovely homage to LPW and HW.. *sighs*
Thank you @Shirley2107, for posting this, it has treated my eyeballs and heart too..
Best wishes from Wales
Oh, thank you! Am rereading all the Wimseys and this was like dessert.
Just like Jeremy Brett was born to play Sherlock Holmes, and David Suchet to play Poirot, Edward Petherbridge is born to play Lord Peter Wimsey....PERFECT!
My Oxonian husband was just like this but even better!
Janette Miller-Heffernan Did he constantly propose to you even though you've only known each other for four minutes too? 😂
That's so funny (and I totally agree!) because he felt otherwise, insisting he was too old for the part. I thought he was lovely, and who better than the great Harriet Walter?
Someone said it perfectly and better than I could and be 2000% correct
Totally agree!
How lovely. I read Dorothy Sayers' mysteries to my late wife while she was in hospital; Lord Peter and Harriet Vane permanently hold a vast place in my affections. Thank you so very much for editing and uploading this splendid video offering.
Marvellous! I've loved this series and the books it's based on ever since I first saw it on PBS in 1988. My copies of the books are so tattered, you won't believe it. I finally bought the series on DVD last year. Only one moment is missing from your montage - where Peter and Harriet are standing on the cliff at the Flat Iron rock - at the end of the scene, he kisses her wrist between her glove and her sleeve, and you see the thrill go through her at this first sensual contact between them.
Placetne, magistra. Placet.
fabulous ...
I do wish they'd included that. They were, apparently, afraid it wouldn't be understood, but of course, we'd understand it.
@@girlCary that was my one disappointment with that movie. I loved that part in the book. 😊
A great loss these two wonderful actors couldn't fim Busman's Honeymoon. The definitive characters, to me.
Mary Nolan How come? I thought there was a film/tv series die Busman’s Honeymoon. 😔 I’m so sad. I’ve been binge watching these past couple of days.
Lord Peter is at once the world's most perfect and perfectly adorable man, especially when he's talking piffle with his monocle on. :)
There is nothing as delicious as an Oxonian in love. DL Sayers got it just right. Reminds me of my youth especially the punt!
Tell us more ;)
What a sweet lovable gentleman. He's like a puppy dog.
Would be wonderful to see Edward Petherbridge and Harriet Walter do a "Lord Peter Wimsey" sequel....the later years. Children grown and back into sleuthing again.
Apparently they had three or four boys, sounds perfect.
@@mfjdv2020 3 boys. Lord Peter's stories. At the age of 52 he is upto lots of piratical mayhem with his eldest Bredon alias Scatterblood who confesses sleepily at bedtime' I do love you,Captain Teach' or something like that.
I read that book quite a while ago and think how delightful his life with Harriet must have been when he sees her rolling on the grass with the youngest son and decides to join in , along with their dog Bombom. Striding folly is the name of the audio recording on RUclips. Enjoy - Search keyword Talboys. Striding folly. They have a really tiresome and interfering guest. Very amusing audio book read by Ian Carmichael.
I agree with the earlier comment about Jeremy brett being born to play sherloc holmes. and here Edward Petherbrdge is peter wimsey charmingly and naturally. .could watch and listen to this dialogue again and again.
I wished they'd filmed Busman's Honeymoon. It's a darn shame they couldn't. Love the books and all the short stories. Jill Paton Walsh has done an extremely credible job of carrying on Dorothy Sayers' tradition. Her 3 Lord Peter and Harriet Vane novels are excellent.
Thank you so much for the tip! I didn't know someone else had started a sequel. If you recommend them they must be worth reading!
Really?! I'm always terrified of sequels by other authors! Witness "Death at Pemberly"
@@misselder1 same here. So far, I have read, "Thrones, Dominions" and "A Presumption of Death". I enjoyed both very much; and did not notice a difference to the original series. Of course, I haven't made a study of it... Well worth the try, I should say. 😊👍
I always laughed when he asked her to marry everytime and she replied: ''Of course not.'' so naturally.
But then i started to feel bad for him while reading Gaudy Night.
I noticed that she didn't really cared about what he was doing.
In fact when he went to the University she didn't even know.
And she didn't know he was part of the secret affairs for internationals problems.
She noticed everyone knew but her and she felt bad because she wasn't so interested to ask him.
In that moment i think she realized her mistake: He wanted to know everything about her but she didn't ask about him.
I'm happy that in the end she realized that she was in love with him.
They make a really good couple.
I like how their love bloomed.
Dear Shirley 2107, thank you so much for creating such a sensitive and emotional collage. What an absolutely fabulous tear-jerker!
This was a darling series, and you have brought all the good bits together so beautifully. Thank you so much ;)
God, Harriet Walter is strikingly beautiful. Thank you for the video, Shirley.
I don't see it, pretty in her younger days but I don't see it beyond that.
I’m in love with both of them! Go figure!
Wimsey, Vane and Pachelbel. Three of my very favorite things in the world, all together. Thank you so much!
Er, it's Bach actually. First of his 48 Preludes. But an easy mistake to make, I notice you aren't the only one!
Oh yes, it''s wassis name later, I clicked through it a bit. Sorry and all that. But I still prefer Bach!
Petherbridge is the perfect Lord Peter :-)
Was Miss Sayers falling in love with her character a bit? I just binged on all three adaptations.
Thank you so much for this.. I watch it over and over and over again!!!
This video was beautiful. I watched the series recently and after series 2 had decided that life had no meaning if Harriet and Peter didn'g wind up together. Great job putting this together!
Could never be truly gooey cause their's is not a gooey relationship. One of the first romances I recognized as being based in mutuality...the first was of course Elizabeth and Darcy.
Just perfect! Thank-you so much for this. Just wish they had been able to make "Busman's Honeymoon" to complete the 4, but I read that they couldn't get the rights.
Is that why they didn't do it! Seems odd to me as the rights were granted them for the other 3, although I did hear there was a bit of bother with Gaudy Night.
Ha! I love it! Honestly? I must admit that these are the parts I skip to. Thanks for putting it together.
Very nicely put together, plus I love Pachelbel's Canon. Now if I can just find the full episodes (which are definitely, somewhere!, here on this site) the clips came from, episodes which I was halfway through watching here when my computer crashed. Argghhh!
Check out the Edward Petherbridge site
I’ve never seen Mr. Petherbridge in this before, but it’s uncanny how much he is THE Peter Whimsy! Thank you 🙏🏼
The stories of Dorothy L. Sayers have been accompanied me more than half of my life and I love the BBC series with Ian Carmichael and Edward Petherbridge as Peter Wimsey.
Thanks for the video. Well, it shows that am obviously not the only hopeless romantic.
The theme is marvelous, the music grand, the acting superb, but none better than the person who created the video.
Thank goodness my ancestors ousted GB from the USA.
Thank you for the montage. That was a treat!
Very sweet..... thank you for doing this.....
I love Lord Peter
wonderful tribute to two of my favourite characters!
9:12 His choice of HOW he talks, it's Petherbridge being Wimsey _acting_ lordly and piffle and light, but breaking immediately from the put-on "nice weather" talk, into a desperate whisper of a genuine man with his hat in his hands, desperately in love with a woman.
I've never read the original novels this is based on, but MAN you can just TELL this is a fantastic adaptation, and the casting is just PERFECT.
The books are even more wonderful and detailed
Wonderfully done!
Lovely montage of two of my favorite lovers - however the background music, beautiful as it is, overrides the conversation at times.
Can anyone tell me the name of the piece Lord Peter was playing on the piano near the beginning of this please? Thanks
Beethoven, pathetique sonata, second movement
@@tocatafugue Thank you.
@@charlottebaigrie9699 no prob, hope you're well!
Placetne magistra?
Placet.
😭😭😭
Beautiful music!
Does anyone know the name of the piece Lord Peter plays toward the end of Strong Poison (starting at 3:03 in this video)? Based on the description ^ and Lord Peter's proclivities, I assume it's Bach? I'd love to track down a complete performance!
+Rebecca Wilson Its Beethoven......Sonata No. 8 Opus 13 "Pathetique"
Andrew Davison Thank you so much Sir!
This is so wonderful!
nicely done. aussierozzie hit it.
Sure would be nice if you could download Strong Poison! I love the three stories with Edward Petherbridge, and have not seen them in a long time.
I know this is a while after your post but all three are on here
Have the series of 3 and love them
So romantic with out being dirty
Brilliant!
full movie? nine minutes?
Splendid labor of art and love @Shirley2107! Thank you!
Perfect adaptations, much better than the Ian Carmichael ones
OMG, that’s creepy Fanny Dashwood from Sense and Sensibility
Searching for FULL version - anyone got it?
That question shaken her foundation. He rescued her and. she try to escape from him .
The added music is a disgrace. Leave the film alone with the original sound will be very much more appropriate for the mood. A poor unprofessional job of the woman Shirley2107 !
