  • Ancient Lithuanian war song "Tu Eglute" (Oh, you spruce tree) performed by Lithuanian band Ugniavijas.
This is a live acoustic performance from the band's concert in November 9th 2019 in Kaunas, Lithuania.
Lithuanian and English lyrics provided below.
Many thanks to Gintautas Mauricas for recording this video.
    Dainos žodžiai:
    Tu eglute, tu žalioji,
    Tu eglute, tu žalioji,
    :Tu eglute, tu žalioji,
    Kol žiemelį nažaliuoji? :
    Tik žaliuoji vasarėlį,
    Tik žaliuoji vasarėlį,
    : Tik žaliuoji vasarėlį
    Kai jau pati gražumėlė. :
    Vai tėveli, tėvužėli,
    Vai tėveli, tėvužėli,
    : Vai tėveli, tėvužėli,
    Žanyk manį rudenėlį.:
    O jei manį nežanysi,
    O jei manį nežanysi,
    : O jei manį nežanysi,
    Aš vaiskelin užsrašysiu. :
    Aš iš vaiskelio sugrįšiu,
    Aš iš vaiskelio sugrįšiu,
    : Aš iš vaiskelio sugrįšiu
    Ir tėvelių neklausysiu. :
    Ajo motina verkdama,
    Ajo motina verkdama,
    : Ajo motina verkdama,
    Sunaitėlio ieškodama. :
    Ajo kruvinais takeliais,
    Ajo kruvinais takeliais,
    : Ajo kruvinais takeliais,
    Kur vaikščiojo jos sūnelis. :
    Bet sūnelio ji nerado,
    Bet sūnelio ji nerado,
    : Bet sūnelio ji nerado,
    Tik atrado jo kapelį. :
    Oh, the spruce tree
    English lyrics:
Oh, the spruce tree, the green one,
Oh, the spruce tree, the green one,
: Oh, the spruce tree, the green one,
Why don’t you turn green during the winter?:
You only turn green during the summer,
You only turn green during the summer,
: You only turn green during the summer,
When it is the most beautiful time. :
    Oh, father, dear father,
    Oh, father, dear father,
    : Oh, father, dear father,
Please let me marry this autumn. :
If you do not let me marry,
If you do not let me marry,
: If you do not let me marry,
I will sign myself to the army. :
I will come back from the army,
I will come back from the army,
: I will come back from the army,
And I will not listen to my parents. :
The old mother was walking and weeping,
The old mother was walking and weeping,
: The old mother was walking and weeping,
    Looking for her sonny. :
She was walking the bloody paths,
She was walking the bloody paths,
: She was walking the bloody paths,
The ones, her sonny walked. :
But she did not find her sonny,
But she did not find her sonny,
But she did not find her sonny,
    : Only his grave. :

I have a lithuanian grandmother still alive (106 yo)... I had the pleasure of meeting the rest of our family in lith 2 summers ago...I love your work, reminds me so strongly of the energies I received from that place... I can't express exactly in words but everything (people, places, objects, foods, buildings) carries an unique and so strong atmosphere I guess I can't find anywhere else... it catched my heart... one can perceive by far it refers to a very ancient and rich culture... your song matches perfectly with this energy... somewhat pagan, somewhat handcrafted, somewhat rough and severe, definetely beautiful and strong... with a bit of sadness and longing... maybe just my ancestral memories calling me? Labai aciu, keep up the good work. Greetings from Brazil.

This song hit me pretty deep. Very well done and sung... I bet it was hard to sing this (thanks for the translation, as that helps a lot to completely understand the song)
It hit me just as hard as the song from Laboratorium Pieśni : Zabilili sniżki

I like your singing wery much. Thanks for englisk translation. This is beautyfull, strong song. Its structure shows, that it is very old. We in Slovenia have only few so old songs. You must be praud of your rich folklore. I'am curious what means ugniavijas?

    • @cezarstefanseghjucan
      @cezarstefanseghjucan 5 лет назад +6

By my own understanding, if I am to split 'ugniavijas' into 'ugnia'='fire', 'vijas'='wind'.
So wind of fire/firewind or later checked to be 'fireworks'.

Many thanks for your kind words.
Lithuanian songs indeed have a very old history. And we have (literally) thousands of them.
Our band's name is constructed from two words: ugnis (fire) and vyti (to weave, to spin, to wind up). I guess Fireweaver would be closest translation to the original name.

@@Ugniavijas Great name, it suits to your songs. I raly envy you your hoard of old poverful songs.
It's intresting that both words in your name are similar to Slovene vords ugnis = ogenj, vyti = viti. I imagined it is somthing with fire, but I didn't think, that the second vord maches vith ouers. I knew that some Lithuanian vords are ralated to slavonic vords, but I didn't think, they are so many. Only in this text: tik = ti, žiemelį =zimi, žanyk = ženit, manį = meni, vaiskelin = vojski and kapelį asociats me to slovene kopljem (I dig).
