Horace's Ode 1.12 written to commemorate the marriage of Marcellus to Augustus' daughter, Julia, provides a superb insight into the ideology of power that characterised the Principate. Here Horace sees Augustus as Jove's "second", his ruler "below" who reigns unchallenged.
