I was fortunate enough to see this work when the Courtauld Collection came to Toronto some 20 years ago. I went with no expectations. I stood, transfixed, for over an hour, gazing at this magnificent piece. That alienated, disaffected young woman left an impression with me that lingers to this day. A true masterpiece.
Fascinating painting the expression on the barmaid's face and the anonymity of the scene brilliantly captures important features of modern life. Reminds me of the song 'Pretty Vacant'
You've enlightened me so much. When I have the chance of going back to The Courtauld Gallery and enjoy its great collection, I'll keep your explanation in mind. Thank you very much indeed !!
