Seeing these paintings is a delight. I always liked some of Van Gogh's work but this video captures the amazing talent that came from his soul as I looked at many works I had and had not seen. One thing I had never noticed is how he captured expressiveness of the eyes in each portrait. When I was in Saint Remy years ago as I drove along a road outside of town it was a WOW moment. It was like his paintings and those of other impressionists came to life as I looked at the trees, the light. the colors. I wish I could click my heels and walk into the museum. Thank you for taking me there.
Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment. Apologies for the delay in replying. A mighty fine show. It is brilliant that you have been to the South of France as so many of these works relate to that landscape.
Another great post. Amazing and beautiful exhibition. Thank you for posting all the work from the exhibition. Being in the US I won’t be able to see it in person. BTW you have the best hat collection.
Thank you, as always, for taking the time to watch and comment - re the hats, I lost my beloved Stussy green bucket hat in Edinburgh but have a replacement lined up!
Thank you so much for fully sharing this show. We won't be visiting from Australia 😢 so we really appreciated your review. We have been fortunate over the years to see Van Gogh's works in the Netherlands and also in major exhibitions (by complete coincidence) when we were in Tokyo once. The number of paintings that we had never seen from all those private and overseas lenders makes this an irreproduceable experience. Even just watching the video was exciting. 10 out of 10 for sure!
Thank you for watching and commenting. It sounds as if you have feasted on Van Gogh - it must have been cool to see Van Gogh in Tokyo as one of the Sunflowers is.out there and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam has so many great works. I was surprised that there were not actually more from Amsterdam in this show because it such a repository.
@artgalleryexplorer while in the Netherlands, we also went to the Kröller-Müller museum at Otterlo, the largest private collections of Van Goghs and generally a fantastic collection overall. Way less crowded than the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. We'll worth the extra travel, we spent the whole day there.
Hi George visited yesterday! I haven't stopped thinking about it... Almost everything I saw and read was new to me. In just two years..to produce works like these, in between bouts of illness. I loved the colours, marks, the thickness of the paint...but sometimes the smoothness of it, so much more too. I particularly enjoyed the series of olive tree paintings. It was very very crowded, and a screaming baby was distracting! However, I don't blame anyone for wanting to go. Great to have every picture in your vlog. I have just re watched it with the booklet in front of me. Challenged by the way to see the exhibition without new specs yet...! Still worth going. Hope your long booking wait for another ticket was successful.
I am glad you managed to enjoy it, despite the crowds. I was speaking to some at the NG last week and it is there biggest selling show for a decade. I felt I had to capture everything for that reason. The olive trees towards the end of the show are divine.
Perfect musical accompaniment! Thank you! This curation has outdone itself. A miracle of trust on the part of global museums. I have seen van Gogh exhibitions through the years. The drawings are exquisite.
Thank you for the comment (especially about the music, SO hard to get right). It is a miracle of trust and sadly, today, the two Sunflower paintings had soup thrown over them by protestors, including the loaned one from Philadelphia. www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c243v5m0r0lo Luckily they were both undamaged but I worry it will stop museums lending works to London. (And I REALLY care about Climate Change too and try to live in a way which shows that).
It is very much up there! I can't believe that it won't be in the top two or three of anyone's year. Really glad you enjoyed it. Also great that it has been such a hit for the N.G. The biggest for a decade.
Best show I’ve ever seen. It was wonderful and a few of the works made me emotional. My breath was taken away time after time. Just stunning. I love your reviews.
Thank you so much for watching and apologies for the delay in replying. I am so glad you enjoyed the exhibition with your own eyes. It is definitely up there, isn't it, as a highlight of the last decade in London. Truly special.
Your excitement after seeing this exhibition is palpable. I really hope I'll be able to see it before it ends. Next time I watch this amazing vlog, I'll be ready to press pause, many many times, to spend more time looking at the works that stand out for me. There are so many! Thank you.
I went last week I completely agree it really is a once in a lifetime exhibition. Will be going back. On a practical note because the pictures are in large rooms I found no difficulty in seeing them.
I agree and those large rooms have seen three epic shows - Raphael, Hals and then this. They are perfect. I am a bit nervous for the return to the Sainsbury Wing but let's hope it has been redesigned well.
This is a beautiful exhibit. It’s a special treat to see less frequently exhibited works. Thank you for posting this. I saw a Van Gogh exhibit in New York about a year ago. Unfortunately, so many of the attendees were more interested in taking selfies with the paintings than enjoying the experience of viewing them up close. It was a very photo oriented crowd that day, I would guess more tourists than New Yorkers that day. The art patrons in your video don’t seem to be doing that. Maybe The National Gallery has stricter rules about photos than The Met does. I am totally surprised that this is the first Van Gogh exhibit being hosted by The National Gallery. Congratulations to the TNG on 200 years of serving public. I hope the show is a huge success!
Thank you for watching and commenting. It is a tricky one with photo's - I will never be critical because when I go to capture the London art scene for the vlog I am one of the guilty parties. I always usually either go to the good exhibitions twice, once without a phone, or go round it twice! One thing I would say is that for an exhibition like this, capturing a work you are moved by on a phone camera is seen as fine but selfie's would be seen as a big no in London. For contemporary, 'Instagram art' people do but it would be bad form, I think, to pose in front of a Van Gogh. I am hoping to get out to the Met in the next couple of years - what a wonderful, wonderful gallery. Lucky you for having access.
I saw this the other week after your review and I was not disappointed. I shall have to go again now though, as it was so good. I agreed with you with one's eyes been drawn to the green floor in the bedroom. I found that happening without any conscious thought. Great review as always, keep up the good work.
I am really pleased you enjoyed it. Truly 'once in a lifetime', isn't it? If you want to go again, tickets are on sale on the 19th November for the rest of the run. Details like the green floor can only be appreciated in person. Thank you for sharing your thoughts after visiting.
Saw the exhibition and agree it is a very, very important show.. Thank you so much for your video. I was able to enjoy it again, and close up. It was very busy yesterday, a Monday afternoon and if I get the chance I’d like to go again. So glad I found your channel just now!
Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment. I hope you get to go again. I am certainly planning to, possibly twice because it won't happen again.
Wonderful exhibition, the best I've visited. Some pictures we will never get the chance to see again in life. I will return for a second viewing. Thanks for the honest review.
Had a chance to visit the exhibition this weekend and though I agree that it was well worth seeing, it was perhaps a feast for the eyes more than for the mind. Beyond the undoubted spectacle I don’t think it educated or informed as much as I would have liked.
Amazing thank you! We're in Canada so will not be able to see the show. We'll be watching this video a few times. Happy 200th to the National! What an amazing gallery. Thank you for your great vlog. Your comments on the shows are really appreciated (don't fully understand the modern stuff, but you're helping me!)🥰

I am going in a few weeks and can't wait! Thank you for the guided tour. It really does give insight and brings out the highlights. I have an early afternoon slot during the week, so hope it won't be too crowded. Going to see the Exhibition on Screen this coming Wednesday. Vincent is my favorite artist. My favorite painting of his is The Cottage, 1885. I got to see it in person in NYC. I was mesmerized by it--I couldn't move away. It was almost alive. I felt it breathing. ❤ Thank you for this preview and nice review.
Wow!! Thank you for sharing the entire show! I did not know the MIA in Minneapolis, MN had a Van Gogh. I will look for it when it returns home. What an orchestration .....
Thank you for watching and commenting. I do like the Olive Trees painting from Minneapolis. You are lucky to have it so close. It was a huge effort to orchestrate this exhibition and I, think, only able to happen because of a 200 year anniversary.
Thank you! I am not able to travel to London to see the exhibit. Your video is the perfect accompaniment to the exhibit’s catalog that I ordered, and look forward to enjoying for years to come.

I finally got to see this and what a revelation! We all think we know Van Gogh but this curatorial choice revealed much that was new to me. Thanks for your lovely video. We can watch it over and over again 🎉
I am so glad you enjoyed it. I agree - it is hard to curate a show which tells us anything new about such an over exposed artist but this one managed it. Thank you for taking to the time to let me know about your visit :)

I'm no expert, but is seems to me that Von Gogh's works are extraordinarily alive because his background strokes are paintings of energy: natural or forces as he--a spiritually sensitive person, felt them and then portrayed these energies as shapes and colors.
Definitely - those background stokes palpably move when you are up against a work with your own eyes. My favourite ever Van Gogh series was not in this show but came even later in the Wheat field paintings around Auvers - these do exactly what you say.
@artgalleryexplorer I appreciate the comment and your post. We plan to be there over Christmas. We were just in Arles and St. Remy over the summer. Since my 20s, I've had this spiritual connection with Vincent that I now understand I'm not alone. He belongs to so many, he belongs to the ages; as human beings struggle these days around the globe, it's a small window of hope to see people open their hearts and take a moment to love this one life's work. I suspect one day there will be a proper exposé not just of Vincent and Theo, but also Jo VG Bonger. Anyway, thanks for your excited video and kind reply.
100% I'm already planning a second visit for early November. It is never going to happen again, I think. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
I am in london now and wanna visit it. But i see tickets sold out online.. do i have a chance of getting a ticket from the national gallery.. pls let me know..
Hi, I am sorry - I've just seen your message. It might, on the off chance, be worth checking with the gallery for returns? Sometimes people book and then return them because of illness of other things.. It is a bit of a long shot but I very much hope you can get to go.
It's frustrating. I've tried to get tickets for a second look. The key date is the 19th November. That is when the rest of the tickets will go on sale, according to the website. I very much hope you can get tickets. www.nationalgallery.org.uk/exhibitions/van-gogh-poets-and-lovers#:~:text=Ticket%20prices&text=Tickets%20available%20for%20dates%20until,be%20available%20from%2019%20November.
I decided to skip to your summary as I am going in 2 weeks (and have given myself plenty of time). I like that the curational descriptions seem to be kept to a minimum, relying on quotes on the walls.
That would be the dream. I really would like to cover up and coming/new artists. Not there yet, time wise, frustratingly. I tend to visit new shows without the camera but need to think about that angle. There is a bunch of good stuff out there that deserves exposure.
A privilege to see the exhibit in person; but, Van Gogh's work has been reproduced ad nauseum--calendars, notebooks, prints, plates, napkins, t-shirts, etc, etc: thus, in many ways, its magic has been destroyed.
He is definitely over reproduced commercially (don't get me started on the immersive experiences!) BUT, unlike some artists I can mention, not over exposed in London in terms of original works so it was a treat. Also, what I loved about this show was the unexpected/ rarely seen works that are not on T Shits, note books etc. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
It was nice to see how many US museums participated in this beautiful show.

Thank you so much for watching. I hope it bought at least a sense of the exhibition to you.
@@artgalleryexplorer definitely, especially with the added letters from Vincent! Great job
But the question is how do I get a ticket? It's all sold out online till the beginning of December :(
It's frustrating. I've tried to get tickets for a second look. The key date is the 19th November. That is when the rest of the tickets will go on sale, according to the website. I very much hope you can get tickets. www.nationalgallery.org.uk/exhibitions/van-gogh-poets-and-lovers#:~:text=Ticket%20prices&text=Tickets%20available%20for%20dates%20until,be%20available%20from%2019%20November.
I decided to skip to your summary as I am going in 2 weeks (and have given myself plenty of time). I like that the curational descriptions seem to be kept to a minimum, relying on quotes on the walls.
Good idea - I very much hope you enjoy.
Looking forward to some artist interviews; Who knows, maybe you will discover someone.
That would be the dream. I really would like to cover up and coming/new artists. Not there yet, time wise, frustratingly. I tend to visit new shows without the camera but need to think about that angle. There is a bunch of good stuff out there that deserves exposure.
@@artgalleryexplorer That and having a keen eye.
Every time I get the chance to see Van Gogh paintings in real life it is a magical experience.
@@splodge57 I couldn't agree more. The 'real thing' blows the reproductions out of the water!
Could never destroy the magic!
@@splodge57 Very much so,
Glossy pages of a magazine.
They are glossy on the notebooks in the gift shop but not on canvas!!
It would be better to see the pictures in their frames.
thank you!
