  • Today I share my thoughts on what I would do different if I was coming to Thailand now. If I could go back and know what I know now about Chiang Mai and being in Thailand, what would I do differently.

    Arrived in Chiang Mai for a one month holiday in 2003.. I had $500 left when I decided to stay. I had absolutely no idea how I was going to live but I figured I could squeeze by on the 500 for a month. Wasn't sure what was going to happen after that! I stayed for 9 years. By absolute chance, I got an amazing job leading tours through SEA for high-end US tour companies. Now I own places in CM, a place in BKK, and a farm and house in Issan! In Oz at the moment, but will be back in October. Best decision I every made! Hope I see you Wayne! I have been watching you since the first video. If I see you in CM, I hope I don't fanboy out!! Hahahaha

    Good topic and insights Wayne, thanks for sharing. I very much enjoyed the walkabout and the bit about getting too comfortable, Surviving the Comfort Zone is perhaps the biggest challenge to life in paradise as misery is a hell of a motivator. And when I think back maybe that's what was different about Japan over Thailand, and why I was almost moved to tears when I was leaving Japan going back to hell in Alaska. In Thailand I always felt like it was easy to get spoiled, while Japan was a place I could feel content and but it was challenging enough to keep you on your toes and not get too comfortable. I know a guy who spent 16 years in Japan, started resenting it and opted to go to Africa rather than Thailand because he said Thailand was too comfy and Africa kept him from going soft.

    • @jackoneil3933
      @jackoneil3933 4 дня назад

      @@WalkAboutWayne I think you might enjoy it. But I experenced Japan more as a local than a tourist, and when I first when there friends who spent time in Japan said to skip it and go to Taiwan or Korea, as Japan was hell, so my expectations were pretty low, and as soon as I steeped off the plane I got a good vibe, and the the more time I spent there the more at home I felt. But it's not easy living and not everything is perfect, and it takes time for many to acclimate, and some can't.
      Sounds like we've been through similar rough bits and had to find our own way through the hardship Matrix so the challenges in Japan like having to navigate things on your own that many can't, are not something we're not troubled too much by.
