    Man I miss having a CD/tape boombox. I remember getting the Master of Puppets CD for Christmas in the 90s and playing it on my sister's set, and my dad getting annoyed that this was what he bought me 😂😂

    I've got a 78 Ranchero. Stock AM/FM with the one 5×8 in the dash. With a rotted cone. Didn't want to switch the shit out. So l had on of these. Almost identical. But a bit older. I just dropped those bookshelf speakers behind the seat. Ran the wires under the carpet to the stock AC DelCo...
    Still jamming 23 years later!

      Went to buy my first new car in ‘78, wanted a Ranchero but they wanted $1,000 more than a station wagon. I asked why, since the wagon had a second set of seats, more glass and steel. He said because the Rancheros were more popular. So I left the dealership.

    I've got a really long skinny philips for these situations. from an estate auction. I'll see if I can find it and post a photo on locals.

    Pop into a local auto shop and grab a radiator hose screwdriver, theyre usually around 60cm long.
    Also what can happen with the erratic disk read is the laser mech damping rubbers sag with age, causing the laser to hunt because its too far from the disk, or too close depending on orientation, a few washers under them fixes it

    I bought a set of long handled jeweler's style screwdrivers from somewhere, maybe an Ollie's discount or maybe a Harbor Freight, maybe even a Dollar Tree, that are quite thin. The heads (phillips and flat) are only as wide as the shank. Never discount the discount stores for the oddball stuff you might need one day.

    i have a fascination for 90's and early 2000's stereos! JVC and Aiwa are my 2 favorite for these types of stereo's. Nice find Brad! She will make a perfect garage stereo!

    Sounds like the lens moving up and down, tryna focus without success. Maybe it's just dusty, or the glue holding the lense has come loose, which explains the effect of the 'percussive maintenance'. I would try checking it and re-glueing it if necessary. It's a common problem on Pioneer CD transports, I don't know about those JVCs. Their boomboxes were among the best in the early 80s, but those late ones are somewhat cheesy.

    • @Fixologist1
      @Fixologist1  Год назад

      I did try wiping the lens with a lens cleaning cloth off camera, to no avail.

      And the lens is still firmly in place? Maybe the problem is with the coils that control the lens. The laser diode should be good if the problem is intermittent. Maybe it really is a bad contact. So much to go wrong in CD transports. And due to the total lack of standardization, a lot of it is impossible to fix if you don't have a donor deck.

  • @JohnMorgans60
    @JohnMorgans60 Год назад

    Maybe the CD lid latch switch contacts were a bit intermittent/grubby so when pressing on case near lid it thought lid was open. Opening closing lid a few times maybe cleared it? Had similar with a cd player recently🤓

    that 'too narrow' thing is deliberate. They do NOT want you opening that thing up. I had a similar unit (another brand) that was the same way; I had to go buy an extra-long screwdriver from Harbor Freight to open mine up. I still have it 10+ years later and I don't think i've used it since, lol.

    I've rescued a lot of gear like that - often its the lens needs cleaning and the transport needs a drop of sewing machine oil on the runners. BTW They might have also chucked it as there's no aux input.
    Classical music is amazing - I became really good on guitar learning a great chunk Mozart's Violin Concerto No.3. Leanring the notes was one thing but the expression and dexterity is endless.
    Lastly, I inherited my dad's Denon stack system (I'm into valve hifi anyway) so I was looking at the CD player and realised, small as it was, I could gut it, put two 8Tb drives in, add a Raspberry Pi running Open Media Vault and another running Volumio / Kody and have 100,000 albums and thousands of films in one silent box. The only reason I didn't is because if someone breaks in and steals the CD player..... [silent_scream]

    Here's the Fantasia for Piano and Chorus Op. 80 I talked about in the video: ruclips.net/video/ZguVmO4l1AU/видео.html
    I could write an entire book on how badass this piece of music is and how much it means to me. This is what heaven will sound like when we get there.

    That's some luck there with that one, being what it was. So not a bad find when curb-shopping. But I kept yelling at the screen to clean the thing off too. Also there's always a non-zero risk of bugs in some form or other when finding things like that. Other than that, I hate those deep screws - particularly when they use non-standard screw heads where those socketed bit sets never seem to work anyways. I'm surprised that with the repair and guitar work stuff, you don't have anything for that. Maybe you added something to the kit since this video came out?
    I've got two older portable stereos where it seems to be the switch contacts going out (likely needing a good cleaning), and I figure they have to come apart because the exposed part of the switch is different than wherever the actual contacts are on the inside. On one it seems half of a DPDT for the main selector is knocking out part of the stereo, with some jostling bringing it back temporarily. Would be interesting to see a repair with that particular kind of problem.

    Still driving around in your Toyota Camry eh. They are absolutely awesome cars. One of the most comfortable cars i ever had and it pulled like a train. I wish i still had mine but unfortunately someone pulled out of a side street and straight into the side of me as i was driving alone.
    It was an insurance write off because it was beyond economical repair.
    For those who don't know, it means that the cost of repair would be more than the actual value of the car so the insurance company do the cheaper option of paying you the value of the car and take it away and scrap it and you're left to your own devices to find your own replacement.
