100 % agree about Les Miserables. It was among the first lengthy classics I've read and I had no idea I would love it and be immersed with it so much.
The Count of Monte Cristo is another classic with an epic unforgettable story that I like.

I’ve recently discovered my newfound love for literature and especially classics, so this is a very interesting and helpful video!! Im Russian but have never read Crime and Punishment since it isn’t a part of our schools curriculum, but I finally picked it up a week ago and it’s one of my all time favourites now. Dostoevsky is just amazing

dude it brings me sooo much joy to see someone praising les mis and my man victor hugo!! truly everyone who enjoys war and peace should pick it up, hugo is so amazing and i thank my lucky stars that my high school taught french courses so i could read his lesser known works bc they’re nearly impossible to find in english
edit: bye you mentioned his poetry as well im so happy no one in america knows hugo for anything but disney’s hunchback of notre dame or the musical adaptation of les misérables

Hi Barbara, I'm happy you're making videos again, your reading tastes are very similar to mine. I read Wasteland because of one of your videos and loved it!
Do a discussion video on the Odyssey ! Also, curious of your thoughts on Notes from the Underground if you read it. I still think about it after many years.

I remember liking merchant of venice in high school due to having a really good teacher to help me with the themes. honestly haven’t tackled any shakespeare since because I’m a bit afraid 😅 but I definitely want to read hamlet and macbeth and feel a bit more inspired now to do so!

I'm just binging the Jane Austen novels and loving them:)
And Les miserable by Hugo was such a read. But the Iliad and the Odyssey are my favourite classics. I still need to read Dostoyevsky!

I still need to get to the Odyssey! I’m really excited to get into it. And I hope you really love dostoyevsky if you get to him eventually! I think one of the reasons I enjoy his work so much is because he had a huge impact on me when I was younger, and his writing is almost familiar to me now haha

One of my favourite novels of antiquity is 'Hard Times' by Charles Dickens.
It's the hipster's pick for best Dickens novel because its anti-capitalist themes, but analysis aside (and ignoring that the union leader is just as much of a bully to the workers as the factory owner) it's just a great window into the horrid conditions of the working class during the Industrial Revolution in England and a biting commentary on Victorian society. And it's short. About the length of 'A Christmas Carol', so you could finish it in an evening if you're interested.

BARBARA! I have a question. Have you read anything by Mieko Kawakami? I know you enjoy Japanese literature and she became one of my favorite authors after I read Breasts and Eggs.
