Unser Gesundheitssystem!
Well, to be fair many of those home remedies indeed happen to be based on actual science (in contrast to homeopathy).
Onions for example contain the amino acid Isoalliin, which shows quite decent antibacterial activity. So before antibiotics were invented respectively isolated, using onion juice was indeed one of the best options to treat bacterial otitis media, especially considering what the rural population had at hand back then. Its the same rationale as essential oils, which also often exhibit antibacterial properties, but are also quite allergenic and were of course hardly available in Germany in previous centuries. Coke and salt sticks indeed won't cure diarrhea, but are an attempt to compensate the loss of electrolytes and provide some sugar as nutritive substance. This treatment of course only dates back a few decades.
The advice to avoid raw beans and potatoes is indeed a very good one: Both plants are poisonous, but both toxins will degrade during cooking such that they can safely be consumed afterwards. Beans contain phytohaemagglutinin which requires quite prolonged cooking (>30min), but since most consumers will use precooked beans from the tin, they are no longer aware of the nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea that may be a consequence of eating raw or poorly cooked beans. Potatoes used to contain high levels of solanine and chaconine (the same poisons as in eggplants), which can cause severe headaches, diarrhea and cramps, but many of today's cultivars were specifically bred to contain very little to none of those anymore. So the fact that one can today safely consume raw potatoes (at least those from the supermarket) shouldn't deceive people into believing that this used to be the case in previous centuries. No fruits or vegetables that we buy today at the farmers' market or in stores are anything close to natural, even if not genetically modified. Most of them have been bred for centuries and were treated in ways to increase the mutation rate in the course of the breeding process (e.g. by radioactive radiation).
Thank You very much for this comment!
Especially the
toxicity potato peel is IMHO underestimated. In Germany we (especially me) love ,,Pellkartoffel'' which means cooked potatoes with ther
potato peel, which is removed (peeled) after cooking (despite the normal way to peel the potatoes and then cook it). This ,,Pellkartoffel'' are very delicous but they contain much more of the poision of the potation skin. For all but very young people it is not a problem but for toddlers it can be (maybe!)
harmful! In my family we had the rule to be careful with ,,Pellkartoffeln'' and small children: If they do not like it, do not push them to eat it!
(sorry, i am not a native speaker. Just a hand full of rusty school english)
So sweet
Am I wrong or this used to have english sub when poeple were talking german? Now I can understand only half of the video 😥
Here is the English version: ruclips.net/video/8A7M7VDlW_o/видео.html :)
@@RachelStewart04 why posting video here instead of dw news
The english version of Meet the Germans has moved from DW News to Euromaxx, DW's channel for arts & culture: ruclips.net/channel/UCd-swDW3HCs4LTZhq8Cf7Fg
@@RachelStewart04 Thank you so much for the English version. I love hearing the German answers, but wold love to always have subtitles. I am trying to learn German.
Beides zusammen bringt alles wieder halbwegs ins gleichgewicht.
Oder bei Übelkeit bzw Durchfall, geriebenen Apfel. Und warmes Bier bei grippeähnliche Erkrankung.
Welche deutschen Hausmittel haben wir vergessen?
"Kartoffeln gegen Husten" müsste heissen: Kartoffelwickel gegen Husten.

So question here for my German friends: Are essential oils used in Germany? They are very popular in the States and I was curious about Germany. Vielen Dank! Tschüss
My girlfriend uses essential oils sometimes when she's sick. She's rubbing the oil on the chest and the back. But I guess she is the only person I know who does that. Neither my family nor I are using essential oils. I swear on ginger-lemon-honey-tea, vitamin c, lots of nasal spray and painkillers! :D
Essential oils are mostl used to make a room smell good. In some cases e.g. eucalyptus the oils are used to treat a cold.
