- Research Forest Products Technologist, Jim Chamberlain, demonstrates how to build a raised bed in the forest to plant ramp bulbs. After ordering ramps bulbs in bulk, the starters can remain refrigerated for nearly two months until you're ready to plant them.
I always just saved a few ramps that I had dug to transplant. I just arbitrarily picked a shady spot in a deciduous woods, made a slot with a shovel, stuck a ramp plant on each side and heeled them in just like a bareroot tree seedling. works good. Put them on a slope and they will reproduce downhill.
I have never seen a anything growing from a ramp that resembles the definition of a rhizome. Ramp bulbs will divide into 2 or 3 individual bulbs, which is evident by them being encased in the deteriorated skin of the previous year's bulb.
Hello, Sara from ABFFC here. Are you mentioning a moment in the video? Indeed you are correct, ramps are bulbs and reproduce by dividing themselves from platelets, and by seed.
The last few times I've transplanted fully leafed out ramps I cut the leaves back by about 1/3. There is virtually no transplant shock this way, and the plant can focus on root establishment. Mine are in full sun and they still quickly take.
You are a real Dr. in the lab... not a real ... farming Dr. :) !
