This thing seems interesting, but for the final price of 300$ you can get good powerful tablet or pi4 + portable display. 100-150$ is more reasonable price range for this.
Ideias for the next version: DC charger needs to be replaced with a USB-C (or even the old microUSB). Speakers should be in the left and right corner, not in the center. And most important the screen with 1080p resolution. Optional: using the original ports (Ethernet and USBs) could reduce production costs. Even if 1 of the 4 ports was covered for internal use. With these changes sunfounder have a buyer.
I agree it seems pretty odd not to use as many of the existing ports as possible - but maybe they want to market the same device to be used with other SBC's - OdroidPad? BananaPad etc. Also no 1080p is a dealbreaker for me, simply because you just know that within six months or so, someone's going to do the same thing, just better, and if they use the existing ports more intelligently, possibly even cheaper!

@: Maybe so but with USB-C you get improved power/current compared to with micro USB. ETA discussed that in one of the PC stick videos and if I'm not mistaken, that was the reason the higher power Pi 4 went with USB-C for power as opposed to the previous micro USB.
Excellent level of integration! With a little modding you can even throw in an SSD to boost performance and have a superpowered Linux-based ARM tablet!
This sort of thing is what I love about the Raspberry Pi; sure, it's a cheap, useful device to browse the internet, program, or tinker with, but it's the devices and peripherals that I particularly enjoy; it has such a great, large community behind it.

I've been waiting for something like this as an alternative to a digital notebook. This will be super helpful for classes, having the lecture on the main monitor and a notepad app on the touchscreen. When you do your follow up video, would you be willing to recommend some/a touchscreen pens to go with it?
I think an ipad pro is more expensive than this, lemme check.. Edit: assuming that you get the kickstarter deal of 169 USD, and get an 8gb raspi (75 USD), this is cheaper than an ipad pro. there's also the benefit of not being stuck with ios.
So this is the first tablet that I'd really be interested to buy. Having dualboot regular Linux and Android sounds fun, hope you do another video with rotation and Android on it.
I think this thing is perfect for that! Best of both worlds! I'd also like to see if there was some way to add a small external SSD mounted somewhere in the case. It looks like there's enough room right under the screen near the fan.
This is the best hw for a portable minilab in the truest sense I have seen so far. Just have to throw in a small form factor ssd & voila you got a mini server in a tablet with all the necessary I/Os carrying around in a backpack. So many possibilities. I would order one tomorrow if it was available in my country

I don't want to be *that guy* but unless you have some specific use case that requires the GPIO, or installation of additional hardware inside the case, doesn't this just seem like an expensive way to get a not-very-ergonomic tablet computer? It's more hackable and configurable than a prebuilt tablet, so that's good, for that sort of thing, but if you just want a device that functions as a tablet, this doesn't beat a tablet
I have several dead tablets which are no use at all now - this will at least let you take the bits out and use them again for some other project. Of course you are getting this because you can make it do things that standard tablet makers don't care about otherwise why bother?
This neat little thing got me thinking: Imagine if there is a compute module based on the raspberry pi 4 that would seat into a parent board that uses USB-C ports for externals and a thinner tablet system assemble... Now that would be a fun time.
Looks excellent!! The power brick / barrel jack are a real downer. USB3/PD is already making its way into the RPi4 (and the rest of my digital life), I wish that would have been used here.
I like how the ports and controls are clearly labelled. Even with the early bird price, and adding a Pi4, this turns out to be a $200+ tablet which puts in competition with other higher end tablets.

Can someone explain to me why projects like this don't use the compute module instead of the regular raspi version? This thing could easily be half as thick as it is if the I/Os didn't take so much space and who needs an ethernet socket or stacked USB ports on a tablet?
I would definitely want to see android on this thing. The raspad actually looks pretty nice, and a DIYer like me could easily mod it for stuff like more battery capacity.. and maybe even more usb ports. Not like they're really needed. 3 is pretty good for such a device.
This does look cool. I just wish they would put 1080p screen on this and also I wonder if you can put 2.5" or M.2 ssd somewhere in the case and maybe bit bigger battery so that it will run more than 3-5 hours on battery. It is probably nitpicking but it would be much cooler if it had all those features. But having portable device that one can dual boot android for media consumption and then some linux distro for light coding or image editing on the go is really cool idea.
I like the design, not as a tablet replacement per se, but maybe more of an 'appliance' to use in the kitchen... Left on the counter to recipe use, or a hub of some sort. The non-Early Bird pricing seems a bit much though. Optional spot for camera/mic would be nice.

You need to put some lights at the very top of it, then it will look somewhat close to the pads they had in the original series of Star Trek which were bulky, but an updated version of it would be kind of nifty, and nerdy.
This looks really attractive, but I wish they used a 20x2 ribbon cable to extend the GPIO pins and expose them to the outside. Also missing is the splitting of the data lines from the Type-C port so it can connect to a computer and act as a USB OTG device.

I'm a newbie to Raspberry Pis, but I believe that they all use micro SD cards for internal memory/"hard drives". This would go in the port at 3:51, but then you couldn't easily access the drive anytime you wanted to change the OS. Also, a standard SSD is larger than the the whole Pi (SSD = 98 mm x 68 mm vs. Pi = 85.6mm × 56.5mm)!
@@luislast6113 the Pi 4 can now boot from USB ssd also so having somewhere to mount one internally would be a nice to have. However that hasn't stopped me from backing it and ordering one. Still a great idea.
@@shaunwatson2175 if you're dead set on using an SSD to boot from, you could could connect one to the unused USB 3 port and place it under the cables from the Pi to the main board. A little hot glue would secure it. Not pretty, but should work.
I kinda want it, thought I'd build it and probably never use it. The wedge shape of the device would make it awkward to use for my tablet use cases (I use my tablet for reading comic and books and web searches during D&D/tabletop gaming sessions). Looks like it will be going for $149 with an Pi4 as an "Exclusive Super Early Bird Price" according to the product page linked in the video description. You need to sign up for emails from the to get said price. I'd like to see Android 10 and 11 thinking on this if you can get it working.
Awesome review! I love that you didnt go to command line once. Always irritating to me when setting up a linux device in an odd form factor and trying to avoid using a keyboard and every snag you hit requires command prompt
I don't know if it was your mic, the speakers on the tablet, the game music, or a mixture, but when you loaded up Cavern, I was looking around thinking it was a phone. It sounded like it that music was playing outside of my headphones. Like it was something else in the room. Anyway, I'm excited for it.
At first seemed great, but as I watched video I found couple of things I don't like: - Fan won't be very effective, the vents are too small and won't allow much to go through, then they fan mounting system doesn't seal it against the case so most of the air will recirculate around the fan inside. - 3S1P battery made out of 3x 18650's is poorly made, you can see the internal connections were made with ordinary cable, you're supposed to use flex cable or nickel strip insulated with capton tape. - A lot of ports are re-reouted for no reason, entire ethernet side of RPi 4 should be just next to the side of the device, if they need one USB port for audio or whatever, they could have used USB-C for that - Any Shim devices shouldn't be really used for portable device that will be moved around. - USB cable looks really dodgy another handmade probably. - Lack of M.2 support is highly dissappointing especially that all USB ports are hidden inside - Proper heatpipe + radial fan - standard laptop cooling desing, should be utilised - Charging via now nearly obsolete DC jack, they should use USB-C with PD instead.
It would make an excellent alternative to the NexDock. I love the idea but I can't immagine using a laptop with a thingy hanging out all the time. This one is at least tucked inside. Looking forward for the Raspad OS review.
I can't help but notice those empty USB slots left inside. Can you use USB wireless controller/keyboard/mouse and a 3.0 mounted m.2 internally? How's the temperature hold in such low ventilation? And will it play nice with overclock? Great stuff as always man.
finally a company who went the route of running video extensions to make there case work but was inteligent enough TO PUT FULL SIZE HDMI on there case good work guys to the rest of you if your gonna make port extenders for your over priced case MAKE IT FULL HDMI and screw the guys who decided to adapt it to display port

I've been looking for a way to fit a Raspberry inside my old packard bell laptop and that board inside this device definitely makes me think it's possible! I hope someone does that in the future.
Something to consider.... my only gripe with the design is the power connector... wondering why they didn't just go for a USB C cable like the RPi4 uses.
Just took a look at the ResPad site, they are selling pre-order for $149 which is fine. But they say that this is a $150 discount, are they seriously aiming for $299 as the normal price? $200 would be a reasonable price but the suggested price is way too much. I think you'd be better off with one of the Pipo tablets for the money.
It looks neat. I love the idea, however I don't like that it has a fan. You can get a $99 walmart android tablet that doesn't have a fan. I get this is quick and etc however I think they should try and give you a big heat sink that can absorb the heat vs a fan that'll get noisy as it ages.
I purchased the old version and returned it. The touch did not work well and in general the power of the Pi back then did not give the user a good tablet experience. I am excited about this new iteration and can't wait for you to demo the official software. What is the price on the new version?
I notice what looks like a lot of wasted space under those wire runs. I'd love to see them use that other usb3 space by adding an m.2 slot in that empty space under the cabling for an ssd boot option.
Android, yes please. I want a unit to act as a head unit for my Leaf so GPS has to work also. I got an odroidn2+ after your review and that works really well just looking for a big screen for it.
They should have a cfengine-, salt or some other scripts that install and configure the software that is needed to make good use of the hardware. Could probably also use some glue to secure the wires, unless you and use stripes to tie them down.
Interesting but it seems like a rather limited market. Compared to available tablets, battery life is worse, it's larger and heavier. It does have far better connectivity and OS flexibility. What would you use one for?

Khalil Chelihi UTM is really slow. you can’t use more than 3GB ram. It’ll be INCREDIBLY slow.
Tab S7+ can have Linux running on it but drivers are going to be a huge issue.

Dual booting is something I didn't think of but would be very usual for s device like this.

A cool feature would be the ability to use the touchsceen as a keyboard, mouse, and drawing pad when attached to a second screen.

@@luislast6113 the Pi 4 can now boot from USB ssd also so having somewhere to mount one internally would be a nice to have. However that hasn't stopped me from backing it and ordering one. Still a great idea.
@@shaunwatson2175 if you're dead set on using an SSD to boot from, you could could connect one to the unused USB 3 port and place it under the cables from the Pi to the main board. A little hot glue would secure it. Not pretty, but should work.

I kinda want it, thought I'd build it and probably never use it. The wedge shape of the device would make it awkward to use for my tablet use cases (I use my tablet for reading comic and books and web searches during D&D/tabletop gaming sessions).

Awesome review! I love that you didnt go to command line once. Always irritating to me when setting up a linux device in an odd form factor and trying to avoid using a keyboard and every snag you hit requires command prompt

I don't know if it was your mic, the speakers on the tablet, the game music, or a mixture, but when you loaded up Cavern, I was looking around thinking it was a phone. It sounded like it that music was playing outside of my headphones. Like it was something else in the room. Anyway, I'm excited for it.

Please do the Android demo, and can you attach a camera to the gpio for video calls. May as well give it full tablet functionality.

At first seemed great, but as I watched video I found couple of things I don't like:
- Fan won't be very effective, the vents are too small and won't allow much to go through, then they fan mounting system doesn't seal it against the case so most of the air will recirculate around the fan inside.
- 3S1P battery made out of 3x 18650's is poorly made, you can see the internal connections were made with ordinary cable, you're supposed to use flex cable or nickel strip insulated with capton tape.
- A lot of ports are re-reouted for no reason, entire ethernet side of RPi 4 should be just next to the side of the device, if they need one USB port for audio or whatever, they could have used USB-C for that
- Any Shim devices shouldn't be really used for portable device that will be moved around.
- USB cable looks really dodgy another handmade probably.
- Lack of M.2 support is highly dissappointing especially that all USB ports are hidden inside
- Proper heatpipe + radial fan - standard laptop cooling desing, should be utilised
- Charging via now nearly obsolete DC jack, they should use USB-C with PD instead.

It would make an excellent alternative to the NexDock. I love the idea but I can't immagine using a laptop with a thingy hanging out all the time. This one is at least tucked inside. Looking forward for the Raspad OS review.

I can't help but notice those empty USB slots left inside. Can you use USB wireless controller/keyboard/mouse and a 3.0 mounted m.2 internally? How's the temperature hold in such low ventilation? And will it play nice with overclock?

to the rest of you if your gonna make port extenders for your over priced case MAKE IT FULL HDMI and screw the guys who decided to adapt it to display port

I been trying to research and I can’t seem to find any results I’m wondering if it’s possible to connect the new camera if you use a pi with a camera port and mount the camera on the back diy style?
The need an m.2 slot and mounting holes to boot and use SSD booting. Should fit fine under those cables. It could plug into the unused USB3 port.
I've been looking for a way to fit a Raspberry inside my old packard bell laptop and that board inside this device definitely makes me think it's possible! I hope someone does that in the future.

Something to consider.... my only gripe with the design is the power connector... wondering why they didn't just go for a USB C cable like the RPi4 uses.

Just took a look at the ResPad site, they are selling pre-order for $149 which is fine.
But they say that this is a $150 discount, are they seriously aiming for $299 as the normal price? $200 would be a reasonable price but the suggested price is way too much.
I think you'd be better off with one of the Pipo tablets for the money.
Totally agree, way too expensive when you cost in a pi4. May as well buy a 10' android tablet
It looks neat. I love the idea, however I don't like that it has a fan. You can get a $99 walmart android tablet that doesn't have a fan. I get this is quick and etc however I think they should try and give you a big heat sink that can absorb the heat vs a fan that'll get noisy as it ages.
I purchased the old version and returned it. The touch did not work well and in general the power of the Pi back then did not give the user a good tablet experience. I am excited about this new iteration and can't wait for you to demo the official software. What is the price on the new version?
I notice what looks like a lot of wasted space under those wire runs. I'd love to see them use that other usb3 space by adding an m.2 slot in that empty space under the cabling for an ssd boot option.
Android, yes please. I want a unit to act as a head unit for my Leaf so GPS has to work also. I got an odroidn2+ after your review and that works really well just looking for a big screen for it.
Name of the extension board and where will I get the external case please?
They should have a cfengine-, salt or some other scripts that install and configure the software that is needed to make good use of the hardware.
Could probably also use some glue to secure the wires, unless you and use stripes to tie them down.

Interesting but it seems like a rather limited market. Compared to available tablets, battery life is worse, it's larger and heavier. It does have far better connectivity and OS flexibility. What would you use one for?
