    I have a very simular sump set up with Poret foam. I pull the foam panels out while the sump is running and it is less than half the work of your approach. Any detritus resuspended is gone in a few hours. Great video.

    Dear Gil:
    You have a super-terrific process, my friend. I did water changes, on my, two, largest tanks, this evening. I do scrape algae off the glass, while the water level is low. My ancistrus is no help. He doesn’t clean the glass, at all. But, I do love him.
    Thank you for sharing your work; full of helpful, aquarist tips.
    All my best,
    Sincerely,
    E. J. Brinegar

      Dear Gil:
      Aquarists have recommended doctor fish (Garra rufa) and Chinese algae eaters (Gyrinocheilus aymonieri) to clean the glass of algae. I’m not sure I could acquire doctor fish and Chinese algae eaters sometimes bully fish, for their slime coat. For now, I don’t mind scrubbing the glass, myself.
      Thank you for all you do for the FishFam Community.
      Sincerely,
      Brinegar

      Thanks mate, the way my old sump was set up I had to remove the sponges to get to the fine pad, which of course made a huge mess. Then I had to drain the whole sump to try and suck up all of that detritus. Good luck with your discus.

    Nice setup, I use separate plastic containers instead of a glass sump. My "sponge chamber" is a 20lt Bunnings bucket, which I just take outside & pour on the garden, quick rinse (no siphoning).

      @@Gilsfishroom well I’ve been taking the water from the actual bog now instead of the tank , but they are the same so I am actually still have questions as to if I have it right.
      My outside bog however ior pond is always under 10ppm so that a good sign, not sure if it os the plants getting more sun or the bog is doing it’s job 🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽
      Also I was wondering -
      I use jbl nitrate test kit and sometimes api-
      Have you used both ? JBL always gives me around 10ppm for my main pond but api gives me more like 20-30 ppm 🤔 I’m not sure which one is reading correctly.

    Why is your water level so high in your sump?
    Good idea with the yellow basket👍 think I'll steal that one from ya✌️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    • @Gilsfishroom
      @Gilsfishroom  Год назад +1

      The main reason is because I made the the tall baffles too high. If the fine pad completely blocks up, the water level will rise in the first half of the sump before it flows over the top of the middle baffle. This means that the level in the pump chamber would become very low. Keeping the sump so full ensures that if the filter chambers are full, there is enough water left for the pump chamber. Another reason is having a higher level in the sump reduces the height the pumps have to push water up into the display tank, saving electricity. Reason three is it increases water volume which is always good. I used to wash the pads on the clothes line, which meant trying to hold them still and getting soaked!

    • @Gilsfishroom

  • @ryanawhiting
    @ryanawhiting Год назад +1

    I love your sump. All the other sumps I see really irritate me because they barely even fill it. But you keep yours nice and full which makes more sense because one of the main benefits of having a sump is to increase the total volume in your system.
    I do have some questions on bulkheads and watertight seals. I see them done a million different ways. One person says only use aquarium bulkheads with a rubber seal and no silicone. Then another person uses regular threaded pvc fittings and just silicones them together. There's a million different ways to approach them. So what are your best practices? How do you use your bulkheads?

    • @Gilsfishroom
      @Gilsfishroom  Год назад +1

      Thanks Ryan. I prefer bulkheads with rubber seals because if the seal leaks, you can either tighten the fitting or remove it and clean the surface, the seal, and try again. Silicone can get a bit messy and doesn't stick to all surfaces like some plastics. If you can't see the fitting, I use irrigation bulkheads or what we call here tank outlets. They are cheaper than aquarium bulkheads but don't look as neat. Thanks for watching mate.
