What can I say that hasn’t been commented. Just found you. Best flosstube ever ever. Especially on samplers. I have always been interested in history of cloth, textiles, quilts, etc., being a long time quilter. I Collect antique quilts so I identify with collecting antique samplers. I am a new cross stitcher, so my pieces are on low count aida, but I do enjoy the craft. Can identify with the ancestry talk as my ancestors were poor farmers in Kentucky. They made quilts but to keep warm and very simple unlike the appliqué and intricate quilts of the wealthy in the Eastern U. S. Just love everything about this flosstube. I am thrilled to see your enthusiasm with handwork. Being an older person it is nice to see younger handwork stitchers enjoying the craft and appreciating all it has to offer as a hobby.

Quilts are so fascinating to me! There are no quilters in my family so I haven’t seen too many but I love the idea of taking all the scraps and making something useful out of them. Very make do and mend. It’s also interesting to see how for some it was/is a creative way of addressing a challenge (keeping warm or holding on to valuable materials) and for others it was more of a luxurious, decorative thing and how that varied depending on need and class. I’m no expert but I’d love to learn more about the history of quilting and its significance even today.

Carmen, I'm not sure you will see this comment since it is not posted to your current episode, but I just heard about you today on Brenda & the Serial Starter and thought I needed to check you out. Boy, am I glad I did! I am smitten with you and your passion for our craft. To see your enthusiasm for your first retreat was so special. It was one of those times that "the stars aligned" for you and I am so happy that you recognized it and was bathed in the joy of it all. Before you ever said the word, "musician" I felt that you were just so...your way of expressing yourself, the way you appreciate all the little things that then crescendo in the the glorious things of life was such a joy to watch. I've always had a great love of music, took piano lessons as a child, retried as an adult, then realized that I was created to appreciate & experience the gift, but not to be a creator. The expression of my creative gift came when I discovered interior design and then began to Cross Stitch! I cannot wait to continue my binge watching of your channel and getting to know you more! One final note: I have always loved the Cello and 20+ years ago, met a sweet young woman in our church orchestra who was a Cellist. My husband & I became her "college town contacts", provided her car service to & from her dorm to practices & performances at our church. When she needed a home cooked meal, she brought friends to our home and we spent many hours listening to them & laughing at their tales of college life. You remind me of her in so many ways. We lost touch over the years but I still think of her often . I wish you many more Retreats and decades of Happy Stitching!

I live in Hawaii and don’t get to go to retreats because they are just too far, but with your video, I felt like I was there! I was just as excited as you and am so happy you got to experience such magic. Looking forward to watching more from you. Wow Carmen, what a phenomenal first flosstube episode! I so enjoyed watching this and really felt the experience of Jacob Palooza through your excitement. Your passion and enthusiasm will make this channel a huge success, Carmen. I love Jacob’s designs too and totally agree with you that there are so many older patterns sleeping just waiting for their moment in the sun. Maybe, you could host your own JacobSleeper SAL to encourage the community to deep dive into his patterns and stitch up a storm of oldies but goodies😉. You’d be just the woman to lead this parade, just saying ….

Thank you for an amazing first flosstube, Carmen! I was at Weekend I and had a similar magical experience at Jacob-Palooza. It was wonderful to meet so many kindred spirits who love MFE designs, antique samplers, beautiful linens and floss, and all the making. I appreciated all the photos and videos you took of the treasures Jacob brought with him from The Netherlands. I was so entranced trying to take it all in that I did not do a good job of documenting what I saw. I completely agree that there are so many incredible charts in the MFE catalog that are sleeping gems and we must stitch them! Charlotte Ramsay is definitely one for them for me. 😊

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and needlework - so glad you are enjoying your time with needle and thread. I would have loved to have attended this retreat but due to life events could not at this time.
Marion Scoular wrote a very nice little booklet on hem stitching and there are some excellent books on hem stitching, pulled and drawn thread.
I hope that needlework techniques and the world of needlework will bring you all the joy that music brings to us in so many ways… and, we are most fortunate to be able to pursue this as a hobby.

I am also glad I wasn’t the only one to just purchase what she wanted…I had decided to do that ahead of time and did not feel guilty. I love your retreat stories. Your stitching is amazing! I hope we meet again. So…Green and Bare It is an awesome colour…it was the colour of the tuxedos for my brother’s wedding but not of the pictures show the beautiful colour. So awesome in person. Final edit of many additions…I can picture you purchasing an original sampler that is over 100 years old and figuring out the pattern. I can’t wait to see where you go with this. Loved this flosstube, Carmen. Just stumbled upon it today - 12/10 - and ready to que up #2. I've never been to any sort of 'stitch con', etc, don't have a flosstube. Just me stitching since i list my bestie 5 years ago; she was the only person i knew who stitched. Flosstubes let me know there are tons of other stitchers out there.
Your video was special because it focused so well on heritage and preserving the past. Loved it.
I myself stitch on 16 or 18 count Aida since my old eyes can't manage higher counts very well.

I found your family's story moving, and you are so right! It if weren't for their determination and fortitude to survive, we would not be here. It's good to be grateful.
As a young child, I remember hearing a cello played for the first time in a school concert. It touched my soul! Beautiful instrument! They are works of art to look at and listen to❤ I grew up on classical and big band music. Five years of piano (which I didnt love because I detested recitals and being humiliated by making a mistake.) I was very young. Now I am very old. Liberace wasn't my favorite role model = Bruce Hornsby is ; ) but the love of music remains! Rhapsody in Blue is my alltime favorite and Delibes, the Flower Duet!

Great video. You are a natural.
MFE's Clemence Regnier was one of the first things i stitched when i started stitching again in 2020. And several more since. They are wonderful. How about a Charlotte Ramsay SAL!
Just bought Song of the Nightingale. Might make 2024 the year of the MFE everything. You've inspired me!
And hey I'm a cellist too. Music and stitching go together so well!

@@cardamenpins I have most of the floss and a potential fabric. Just need to buy the pattern.
I think I'll change the family initials and likely leave out a line of them. Will see what works once I can play with the chart.

Glad you were able to go and then share with the rest of us.

This was the most wonderful Flosstube, your pictures were perfect! Your stitching is amazing! Although I think you need more WIPS, needleminders, Floss, fabric...it's so great rabbit hole! Please make more Flosstubes! BTW, I have been playing the piano since I was 9 and I am a great grandmother! See you next time.

Your video was amazing. You really hit it out of the park!!! Your stitching is absolutely exquisite and I would love to know the thread conversion for the holland sampler!

Hi Gisela, thank you so much for your thoughtful comment. I’m glad my video resonated with you! It would be easiest for me to send you the garden of holland conversion through instagram, are you on instagram? I split and repeated some of the colours in the conversion so it’s a bit hard to explain. I’ve been sending a picture of it to everyone who’s been asking for it. I have the same account name on instagram as here: cardamenpins
If you send me a message or comment, I’ll send that off to you!
