Hi everyone, this is JD, your gadget review friend!
Welcome to the first Samsung Galaxy S24 comparison and we're diving straight to the most formidable competition which is last year's Galaxy S23, because it goes head-to-head when the video resolution stabilization and the perfect triple camera setup, of ultra wide wide. And a native optical zoom!
Today we're testing both indoors and outdoors location, we are covering all the scenarios as much as possible, we're taking a look at the colors of the sky highlights and strong light source. We're also utilizing all three sensors from the ultra wide wide and telephoto, all shots were taken on auto mode so everything is shot by default, out of the box!
Looking quickly on the specification, I think they're rocking identical hardware- both have 50 megapixel main with 1/1.56 inch with dual phase detection autofocus and OIS, what has the same 10 megapixel telephoto with phase detection autofocus and OIS that has 3X zoom and a 12 megapixel ultrawide with Super Steady Video. The rear camera can shoot 8K24 at 30. FPS with stereo sound recording and Gyro-EIS!

good point on the less oversharpening trend - although over sharp does look good on mobile it looks awful bigger. The video of the S24 looks way better on your tests
0:52 My biggest issue with the s23 (besides the oversharpening on 1x) is how highlights tend to be blown out with a weird color cast. But here it's actually worse on the 24. I get bright areas like the right image all the time on my s23 ultra.
I didn't really notice any other differences besides the sky and snow have better white balance in the 24. I still think fixing the s23 oversharpening and white balance issues can and should be done with a software update. Whether it will or the only way to get the basic camera fixes will be to upgrade, is unclear.
Great comparison! In terms of camera, do you think the image & video quality of s22 can still keep up with s24 ? I wonder if the difference is just slightly or quite noticeable. If possible pls do a comparison between s22 and s24. Thanks and keep up the great work!

The S24 has scene optimizer turned off as default. Did you shoot the pictures with scene optimizer on, om both devices? And thank you for a great video!
Intelligent Optimizer: Maximum, Scene Optimizer: ON. I had to tick that for a similar experience. So it's out of the box kinda, but I had to make that call.
Also I noticed, it changes the colors on food, nature, could be portrait too.
Thanks for the video, super clear and simple! I've been buying Samsung since 2005 (yes the flip phones!) and have been upgrading year-by-year for the past few years now in the S series. I think this is the first year I'm going to SKIP a model. The differences year-by-year are getting smaller and smaller with these phones, and this year seems like the worst yet across all specs as far as being worth the upgrade.
A tiny bit more RAM I'll never notice, more pixels I won't notice in the screen. The AI stuff, I don't care about right now (and Samsung doesn't always get new things right like that the first year, I'm looking at you Bixby button!). And, most importantly, differences between a camera I won't notice. I buy these phones mainly for the cameras anymore to take awesome photographs. I have a keen eye and the differences between the two in this video are so miniscule to me.
I'm gonna hold off; I'm actually excited to see the next Samsung Z fold later this year. I may make the switch to that model soon, I think they're a little more neat and innovative than the S series now, if the cameras can compete with the S series.

Well, I think S22 is still a solid camera phone. If you will shoot on daytime, I dont think there's so much difference tbh.

Should we of or on scene optimizer ,someone says that when it on white balance look warmer pls update me
I feel ike when I'm testing them, scene optimizer doesn't always kick in, depending on the scenario. It will still be warmer most of the time. Try it and check if you will see the difference.

I bought last week the s23 256 for 670$. The camera does not have much difference, And the IA was announced for s23. I think it was a good decision.

I used to had S22. I could made the photo more natural by turned Scene Optimizer off, but how we can make that on video, can we use default Pro Video as a video recording and is that more natural?
Good question, I think color grading the video on edit and decreasing saturation. My 8K footage on S23 looks like I put on a lipstick, yeah. I feel you. 🤜🤛

s 23 images are MUCH better than s 24. S 24 images are so soft and the faces look almost photoshopped. i love the s23 as it gives more control to the user with the pic if they want to soften the pic later.

I don't understand, why do most photos from S24 have some blurs? Is it problem with focus? Also it lacks details from shadows compared to S23
Hmmm, I think Samsung removed the oversharpening, so it feel like a little blurred. We are used to sharp photos.
If the phone as the same specs in camera i wil say there shouldn't be a difference but as i say is all about tuning down colors on display mode the s24 is less saturated so if you changw the whole color display you also change the camera display color gamut
Wow there's a huge difference, the S24s pics look more natural and not oversaturated and shadows are not completely blown out

really depends on what you like. iphone has longer value retention. Samsung has more features to showcase.

This is a tie for me. Maybe a bit less noise in the s24 but the exposure is better in the S23 and the portraits in the S24 looks too washed out for me. So the usual software upgrade after a year but the hardware is exactly the same! Not worth an upgrade at all! Plus here in Europe is back with Exynos. No thanks!

I don't think Samsung will do this, I havent heard rolling new features to old smartphones, specially if its a unique feature of the latest phones (that needs sales).
Also if you shoot videos on even the s23 or photos beings the phone in basic color you will see less saturation on that line

Hmmm, iPhone 14 Pro is still a solid choice. S24 has 4K 120fps, 8K 30fps and smaller selfie punch hole.

The s24 is less saturated than the s23 itself when the fix comes the s24 photos are gonna be vivids there is an update coming with the February patch

I can't believe it! Samsung is finally listening! The fact that theres no more over sharpening is already a huge step up from the S23. I wonder if they will fix that issue on the older phones too since its just software.

My ritual before snapping a photo on the s23 is to lower brightness from 1/2 to 1/4 because the pictures are brighter than they really are in real life! Looking at your samples, it seems they just changed the color profile but photos are still bright so meh..
And maybe turn off scene optimizer, see if that makes a difference.

Not worth it, all changes seems to come form software. They moved in direction of leica authentic colours. Sensors seems to be the same. Please, make a closeup on the pictures. They lack details, they are not good at all. Only good for social media and smartphone screen.
One person on olx is offering 1 month old s23 at like 35 percent cost .. Do you think it will be legitimate.. How to check for its genuineness
Ask for IMEI, do IMEI checker, then on meet up, make sure it has the same IMEI

In recent years there has been no improvement in Samsung cameras. Here old wine is sold in new bottles.
What I got from this is that the cameras are basically the exact same, with the s24 being like a 5-7% upgrade

I prefer the s23 in some situations, whereas the s24 looks better in the environment pictures. I also wanted to ask, if I want to buy one of these 2 phones next year in 2025, which phone would cost lesser and in general, which phone would be a better pick?

@@panksa7853 that's the thing I'm stuck on. If it weren't for the 7 years, I'd pick s23 because it's cheaper, but the 7 years is really tempting because I mean to use the phone for many years
The S24 is clearly better in terms of colorimetry (closer to reality), but in my opinion, there is still work to be done in terms of the brightness of the photos (too often too bright), the exposure too high in most cases especially the background, the white balance, the management of neon lights at night, and especially at the level of night photos.
Ps: I hope that these new algorithms will be ported to older Galaxy phones like the S21, S22 and S23 🤞🏽
I hope so too! Sometimes its kinda dull though. Like the the portrait where my back leans on the car. Doesn't feel like Samsung shots lol. But hey, they changing it. 👍
S23 I found is better. It's a lot more vibrant and face details is more natural.
Does the s24 have 1080p 120fps video?
Only 1080p 240fps. In post you can speed it up to 2x to get the equivalent 120fps.
