  • Very old footage from the opening year of "Shock Wave" @ Six Flags Over Texas.
Contains an onride filmed with a mounted camera + offride impressions.
These clips were recorded in 1978 for a german documentation about Anton Schwarzkopf, the manufacturer of this classic coaster.
For a few weeks, this was the worlds tallest and fastest rollercoaster back in the day !

I am amazed at how much the landscape there has changed since 1978. I spent many a summer day there with a season pass in 1978. Took me right back. Thank you for sharing.

Love, love this. I too rode it when it opened in 1978. It was striking with it's all bright white track and structure and deep blue trains. There were no trim brakes used either, it was quite a bit more rambunctious. And the Big Bend was still running that year (and the next) as well. Classic Six Flags. Glad this coaster is still around.

I've ridden almost 300 steel roller coasters all over the world since 1980 when I began this hobby, also have ridden many of what are considered "the best" steel coasters. I can say without a doubt that Shock Wave is comfortably within my top 10 of steel coasters & always has been. It's an absolutely amazing, intense ride with some of the strongest backseat ejector air-time of any steel coaster. Shock Wave's loops are incredible & the ride is glass smooth. This will always be one of the best.

I started riding Shockwave the year it opened, and it is one of the best! And yes, the original color was white.

Me, too. I was there Grand Opening DAY, waited 4 HOURS in line.

Yeah shockwave is fun but a 4 hour wait wouldn’t be worth it but back then it probably was

@@MasonThatWeirdGuy Back then, there weren't any other loop coasters around. It was the first in Texas, as I recall. So it was a big deal.

@@Monorail-Beyond-the-Veil I know I’m a year late of responding. But, yeah. You do have a point right there. I get it now

Weird, there was also a song by Black sabbath called "shockwave." It was released in 1978.
