- Luke Holland and The Word Alive live at the VANS Warped Tour in Nashville, TN
July 29, 2014
Song title - "Play the Victim"
Luke's current Meinl Cymbals set up is listed in the beginning of the video after the initial credits.
Regarding the sound you hear with this video -
1.) It's always somewhat left to chance how the audio will turn out in many of these live and very much on-the-go videos. That being said, the only issue with the audio in this video is that the mic on the Zoom was simply too close to the hihat. So when Luke goes to the hihat, particularly when he plays it closed, you can hear the mic "clipping."
2.) Provided you are listening to the video through decent ear-buds or head phones or decent speakers connected to your computer, you should be able to hear a reasonable audio recording based off of the Zoom Q3HD which was one of three cameras used to record this. The other two cameras are the Go Pro Hero 3 Silver edition model. Their audio is nowhere near as good as the Zoom Q3HD, so that is why I went with it for the sound. (-Chris)
one the best live drum videos on youtube... been watching this one for years haha
those cymbals are perfect for this type of music..sound like a boss..
Luke is out of their league. They're lucky to have him.
JankSmanks not everyone just wants to play constant fucking solos and dumb riffs. People do like to create catchy music, just as people like to listen to it.
JankSmanks I know! Iwas talking about the guy who originally commented. people think that musicians just want to play complex stuff all the time and its not the case
Davulonix Couldn't agree more. He should branch out. Wasted on this group.
+Fistfulobananas solo artist
Well although I do think Luke is an absolutely fantastic drummer he’s not wasted on the band his skill just compliments the band like let’s say he plays a song that’s not very difficult for him he can be more in the pocket y’a know and sounds epic plus all the people in the word alive are very talented in their on regard so I don’t think your entirely right here but it’s your opinion
the double peds are driving me crazy!!! there is tremendous difficulty in playing that against your hands!!! great job!!!
stevenreyes005 they are indeed. You could check Aquiles Priester or maybe Dirk from Soilwork. Very hard stiff to play on double pedal. Not only on speed (like Nile) but on coordination.
I will never forget the time I got to meet luke holland. Best day ever man. Such a nice dude too
3:05 That triplet part on the bass though. That's my favorite part.
The ghost notes at 1:45 are such a nice touch underneath that entire part. This band is amazing, this drummer is great, and these cymbals are so NICE, super crisp and clean perfect sound for this.
This video made me switch to Meinl. Great stuff!
Ghos notes at 2:00 maaan awesome. He is indeed an youtube drummer that plays fuckin well live with no editing and stuff like that. He has a great technique and creates awesome drum parts. Very clean and groovy.
I used to talk a lot of shit about Luke, but I dig this a lot. Seems he's concentrating less on stick tricks and more on sick parts now, he's definitely matured as a drummer!
Gotta teach Cooper the same thing now haha
yeah, he has lessen his stick tricks
Conor Burridge i know right. still hate him though. wayyyy to over rated.
Gordo Smith Why do you watch him then?
Daniel Morton
Its RUclips for one, another is that i like to see the direction hes headed in.
I think I was here for this lol I must’ve been passing by but I remember hearing this song live that day
The bassist is all like: nobody can hear my notes anyway, might as well dance like a total lunatic xD
Dan is actually a great bass player and he kills it live
Joey Lee word to that
hahaha i think that sometimes when i see the bass player going nuts at concerts :P
damn right he leads the audiences to dance like lunatic
its called stage presence smart one
so good live. the word alive is the real deal
He certainly loves that ride bell! Either way, this is a good performance! Great job, Luke Holland & MEINL Cymbals!
not a fan of the band, but definitely a fan of the drummer
Yeah, looks fun to play.
...what you said. 👍
*4:32** pours monster in his hair*
"Wow he takes sponsor ships really seriously"
It's actually water in a monster can...Monster fills them with water to give to the bands or venue's that are sponsored by Monster Energy...
@@vgarcia9099 It's true
its tour water
I like how the audio was mixed and mastered (or the lack thereof).
Livin the dream, incredible player and performer 🤘🏻
such amazing snare work!
I love Luke 💗
His hi-hats sound amazing 💝💝💝
Luke deserves better than The World Alive.
Fernando Salazar totally agree
Maybe he does. But those tunes seems to be really fun to play indeed. Im a fan of a half melodic vocals like that. Everybody is jumping.
Word*
Those ghost notes at 2:00 are so money.
That's the double bass bro....
***** no its not bro........
that's ghost bro
do you know what ghost notes are alec?
well, you can't see his other leg and you can see him hitting the other drums the whole time. He is an experienced drummer, I would assume he is fast on single base, because you need to learn single before double.
bruh , i love how he shuffling !
Me encanta este muchacho...
Love that snare!
the meinls sound so juicy, im putting it in my bucket list!!!
I think the craziest part of this video is that the dude chilling on the far side of the kit was their drum tech for luke, but he's the current full time drummer. I saw them live in denver and he is still setting up his own kit lol.
he's matt right?
Nice playing man.
i really like the finish on your kit :D
listened to this with earbuds for the first time. omg... lol WOW
I love him!!
I was there!
Lead singer poured monster on his head at 4:34...XD
+Stig & Gus It's actually water inside those cans ^_^
+Stig & Gus sponsors dude
😂😂 Water dude.
his power is awesome🔥🔥
dope🔥🔥
So its warm enough for no shirt, but cold enough for a beanie? 0_o
Luke is all about the style man
***** don't be bothered man. you kill it. that trash crash is a nice addition to your sound by the way. PERFECT off hand crash paired with the Byzance. Digs
Versus Terminus *****
Oh this wasn't a dig haha, I wish I could get on Warped Tour or play double bass anything like that (or both) :)
***** Haircut>Looking like a twat
***** lol yes ... ''keeps the hair out of your face''... i wonder why black veil bride wears gloves... '' yeah hum, we have really sensitive hands '' , ah dear metalcore
Wow Love the ghost notes!
amazing!
beautiful sound of snare :-)
so good that meinl knows how too mix a hi-hat
The audio from this this is from 1 mic on a camera right next to the hats.
Raymomd Riley Probably.
He's so amazing!!
Solid drumming !
Telle @1:38 gives me chills everytime.
watching Holland play these drums gives me goosebumps 👌
I can't get into this kind of music or drums. I've tried to keep an open mind but it just doesn't make me feel any kind of rush or anything. Solid playing, not my cup of tea. Some of those breakdown parts just don't flow right to me, I don't know..
You're not alone. :p
Patrick M. I want to like all music as a drummer and all but it's hard. But yeah you are right, you could easily butcher someone on here about it haha.
I had the same feeling when i play this kind for the 1st time ... I can't feel the breakdown. Then i practice and try to listen more about 2 or 3 months. so now i can play a bit better :)
what im trying to say here that you should keep practicing a little bit more. may be it will work, like me !! :D
thanks for the tip.
yes great drumming the music sucks ... but the drummer is class
wow awesome camera angles
So sick!!!
So damn good
groove machine, damn
The ghost notes holy moley
awwe his smile
wow this is the best live drum cover !!!!
This is a cam not a cover but you got the idea
Hi Luke, I would really appreciate it if you made a vid about the riff from 0:45 - 1:10. I reallly like that part and I want to learn it as you play it.
***** ^
Jordy Vanhentenrijk he breaks down the song on his website.
Can you fucking do this? I don’t think so 🤨 Luke Holland is one of the greatest to ever do it respect this man
If only these kids knew they were in the presence of Luke
Clean!
Matt in the back waiting his turn 🤘🏽
sick!!!
can someone explain me the groove at 1:45 plzz
If you want an explanation by Luke of of a groove idea similar to that one at 1:46 look up Luke Holland "ghosted groove" I think it's on the Drums 180 channel. Cheers biiiie :)
it sounds like he is doing parradiddles between his snare and bass drum.
Tight!
@3:05-so dope
The guy with shades on has the best view
This dude is a fucking savage
only luke would wear a beanie in the middle of summer
Does anyone know the notation for the 2nd verse ghost note shuffle beat?! That was brilliant.
awesome
Seth Rogan chillin at the back stage watching Luke Holland playing drums.
If I can wear those ghost notes, I would probably choke to death because of how tight they are
2:30 - 2:45 Fucking legend.
did the singer pour Monster on the back of his head? at 4:32
lmao he did
DAT GHOST NOTES !!!
what are those? D:
@@Caprimulgodellaselva 1:45
No. Just no.
3:55 is that Matt standing off to the right?
I was wondering the exact same thnig, really looks like matt horn, but this wouldn't make any sense
@@str1897 Well, matt has been touring teammate with them since 2012 or 2013 so it does make sense to see him standing there
@@aesthetichorizon9077 yeah, i figured it out after getting some infos, he was acrually the drum tech and he played on Life Cycles tho, i was total wrong ahah
Great😆
Did he just pour monster in his hair... 4:33
Hahahaha, I thought a women was being assulted at 1:42ish. That had to be one of the worst sounding screams (growls, harsh vocals, whatever the hell you wanna call them) I have ever heard live.
Well it ended at that mark, but whatever.
BurnThePope0514 You do know you can just edit your comment, instead of commenting on your own comment... haha
Listen to The Dillinger Escape Plan w/ Mike Patton. Some of the screams there will make your body jitter... It's like a woman being raped on steroids.
Jack Heet look up "Chiodos" and scroll down and watch them live at warped tour chicago from last year.... Craig Owens does a REALLY REALLY REALLY HIGH PITCHED girly scream near the beginning of the set.

Ghost Note master in action.
Its cool hes actually technically sound
Sick
4:32 did Telle pour Monster into his hair?!
Man, it's so called "Tour water" - just regular water in Monster branded cans. It's used for promoting purposes on stage during sponsored tours.
4:30 dude in front of the drum set pours monster in his hair.... wtf
+John DeVitis yeah i remember a warped tour i went to Monster was a big sponsor and all the water for the bands were in monster cans
Alguém em 2019?kkk
4:30 Did you put some monster on your hair man ? O.o
It's water sponsored by Monster ^^
They fill their cans with water on Warped
That part around 3:20 always reminds of Tesseract. Which is funny cause these two bands aren't alike at all
+Scott Bowers Holy fuck, you're right. I never noticed that
+Kerim Luca lol I know isn't it weird?😀
Scott Bowers Yeah, it is! It's pretty embarrasing I never noticed, even though I listen to TesseracT relatively often. What's your opinion on Polaris?
+Kerim Luca I'm mad late dude, RUclips never tells me when people reply. But I love it. It's definitely Different. Happy that my favorite singer is back. And my favorite track on that album is definitely utopia.
Scott Bowers Not a problem, man! I love it aswell and Utopia is sick, but my favorite track is Hexes, just the atmosphere alone gets me every time I hear it. One thing I miss is the "heaviness" though. I really miss the screams/shouts.
Slayed
He's using an 18" mb20 rock China
🔥
What's recording the sound? Good sound, lol
I think they took the audio from what the mics picked up because I don't feel like a go pro could pick up those ghost notes that clearly hahaha
AaronSmithchyeaah That's what I thought aswell...

He doesn't use a monitor or clicktrack? damn!....
you can see the cable for his in ears running down his spine :)
But...but... i havent seen him play the Rossanna shuffle tho.
I really don’t want to come across as a know-it-all, but I thought for future videos that you maybe could take the sound from the mixer. Just to get a slightly better audio.
At the end does telle poor monster on his hair ?? Lol
It's regular water in a monster can. It's labeled "Tour Water". Advertisement at its finest.
not a big fan of how he splits up time in fills, but you have to give him major props for the talent to do it. The stuff he writes isn't easy to play by any means. Some of his fills just don't seem to fit into what the rest of the band is playing, but maybe it's just me
Not trying to be mean or harsh, but that's honestly what makes his playing so distinctive among his contemporaries. Metal (especially metalcore) at its most straightforward can come off ver monotonous to some. Luke is applying his take at blending modern metal with a hint of Gospel and djent grooves. Like it or not, he's paving the way for other drummers in the genre, as well as younger drivers who aspire to be and play more like him.
I agree 100%. Just doesn't flow all together nicely. Then again I really don't like this kind of music no matter how hard I try.
*****
no need to 'TRY' to like something. either you like it or you don't. what's there to prove
paucceri Trying to see if I just was being cocky about it for no reason but I've humbled myself to listen to it and tried to enjoy it and I can't. Nothing to prove I figured maybe if I could like it I could learn a lot of neat stuff but not much interested me.
*****
that's fine, there are lots of musical styles i'm not into, even though i'm sure i could learn cool stuff from them. the best way to learn licks and styles and grooves is to listen to the music you like, and go from there.
anyone watching in 2019
That crowd is so dead. Its hurts me.
(4:33) "L'Oréal-Monster hair rinse. Energize your hair. Because your worth it."
k what cymbals is he using??
BORDERLAND BEATS meinl byzance
What song?
what pedal is Luke Holland using
+Bryan Huertero In this video I think just the regular DW9000's but I know for a fact he currently uses DW9000 XF's with a transparent grip tape on the pedal boards :)
+Brandon Chambers thanks
pours monster into his hair... crazy bastard
Damn that motherfucking snare
