- Azman Hamid fell in love with Pulau Ubin while growing up on the island. Even though he has moved to the mainland more than three decades ago, his heart remains on Ubin. He has been taking a boat to the island daily ever since to work as a taxi driver. He calls himself the last Malay driver in Pulau Ubin, because he literally is. Together with 6 other drivers of taxi vans on the island, Azman is committed to preserving Pulau Ubin’s kampong life in the face of urban development and dwindling visitor numbers.

CIK AZMAN ferried us 6 people in his van back in the early 2000s to the NPCC campsite when it was raining and he told us, just pay whatever we can as we are all students, so we collect whatever money we have and pass it to him, then he gave us half back to tell us. just pray for my health and happiness. Lovely Legendary man!!
@@obiwan88I agree, I'm appalled by the comment. He should be referred to Sir Azman.
@@obiwan88
@obiwan88 what are you on about?

Give him a national day award. A man of passion and with a good mission
100% agreed
👍👍👍
really passion ... highly recommend watching this entire video from start to finish ... touched by his story
I dunno why u guys make such a big fuss about this,do u know what its like to have a complete monopoly on a island?this man is god.down there he makes the rules.down there he is the mfing shot caller, big stepper, underground methods, product of many errors.
Every taxi ride has to go through him, prices he set, theres no one there to tell him what he can or cannot do, surely not comfort delgro cause they cant even be bothered to be there.he is the dark wanderer, either u accept the price or u go ur way.
He who has the taxi, makes the rules.
Imagine how big he could be if he was more entrepreneurial and more PAP profit above people....uber eats, amazon same day delivery.
@@jontan-dt3qv well thats ur pov
Saya doakan pakcik dan semua penduduk di Pulau Ubin, murah rezeki, segala urusan dipermudahkan.
Aamiin Aamiin Ya Rabbalalamin.
Aamiin Aamiin Aamiin
STB should appoint him as a ambassador , give him an allowance. Better and cheaper than advertisement on Orchard Road.
Singaporeans! Support Pulau Ubin ! Visit it regularly; eat there, exercise there.....rejuvenate there.
Would be good for STB to train this Malay man to be an official guide and give him a decent job for taking people on organised tours in his "taxi". He has passion and still young enough to pick up communication skills.
Please feedback directly to olivier_lim@stb.gov.sg / melissa_ow@stb.gov.sg / Gary_LOW@mti.gov.sg
Yea lor. Rather they pay him and the other drivers than these random youtubers.
I still remember Wak Azman from my NS days in Pulau Ubin back in 2018. He help me when I arrived late to the NPCC campsite on a rainy day with no money for a taxi. Wak Azman selflessly offered to taxi me to the campsite without asking for payment. His kindness has stayed with me, and I miss him a lot. Similarly, I fondly remember Wak Othman, who was always at the NPCC campsite. The FI boys should know about these amazing individuals. I miss them both dearly.
Rasa nak menangis tengok pakcik ni punya passion. Semoga diberi kesihatan yg baik buat pakcik ni insyallah.
I remember being in his cab before! He was so friendly and warm! He even showed me a beautiful drawing of himself!
Wonderful to see someone so passionate about keeping the awareness, memories and everything he knows about Pulau Ubin alive.
I need to make a trip to Ubin after this video. Have been staying in Singapore for almost 30 years and never had that chance.
Nice man, heart warming that he enjoy the island and wishes to spread more awareness of the kampong days! Someone should team up w him to support him!
*This man is so noble and hardworking and inspiring*
Mr Azman is super friendly and knowledgeable! My friends and I used his services earlier this year and had a great time speaking to him. :))
Azman is very well spoken!
notice that not everything is about money for this legend.... sometimes that what makes life so interesting!
Never been to Ubin, but this video is the definitely the reason why I'll be visiting!
This is how you introduce national heritage. I feel like visiting Pulau Ubin just by watching this video. Never heard of Pulau Ubin ever before.
If you're not Singaporean, that explains why u're not aware of Pulau Ubin👍
Does nobody felt a sense of sadness that we are losing literally everything very soon that was meant to be culturally relevant? I personally think this is sad to see, I have been visiting Pulau Ubin quite often to have a different feeling from our usual concrete jungle, and seemingly knowing this would come to an end.
I remember taking his van. I’ll bring my students here to study the ecology of Chek Jawa, an annual affair. They are very surprised that such a place still exists in Sg. Doing my bit to getting others to love this island! ❤
I really hope our gov will leave the island alone.. As its really important to stay as it is. Maybe can upgrade and improve the attractions for locals and tourists to come. Really love the place. Reminds me of my kampong time. Although I was very small. But I had fond memories.
The island is under PRESERVED
Mr Azman, pls stay healthy and be happy always yeah.
Lets hope ubin can b retained for as long as possible..In their natural state as much as possible...
The island is under PRESERVED
Thank you for keeping the tradition of the Kampung Spirit! Have to pay Pulau Ubin a visit soon
I was there last September! Hello from Bucharest, Romania - a huge underrated city in Europe:) Known also as "Little Paris".
This video evokes so many emotions all at once. There's happiness, joy, sorrow, anger, and pity, all intertwined. I truly hope that this uncle continues to live a long and peaceful life.
Thank you for reminding us of our history and the beauty in Pulau Ubin! Uncle deserves a award for his passion and commitment to the history of Pulau Ubin.
this video highly deserves a full watch from start to finish... touched by his story
Beautiful documentary man, kudos to the team and also Mr Azman Hamid
Beautiful documentary man from CNA as always
Does the shopee go to Pulau Jubin to deliver parcels? And by any chance, can Singapore government give this guy some sort of medal for keeping Singapore's heritage? In fact, those people who are keeping the country's heritage to live longer should receive a medal.
Yes through Singpost and they come here thrice a week only.
A true gem of a person. Would like to experience Pulau Ubin someday..
Singapore government should develop the island but still need to maintain the kampong for historical purposes.
The island is under PRESERVED
Thk u sir for giving tourists information on pulau Ubin
Naise! Maybe someone can help this uncle to write a book on Pulau Ubin...
Ahh i know this cik.. every twice a year, wen i do medical coverage for SAF warrant officer course.. he will be one of our transport vehicle drivers including uncle Huat & his sister
Semoga panjang umur dan murah rezeki pakcik!amin ya rabbalamin...
Let's support Pulau Ubin!
Thank you Uncle Azman!
Wish you all the best Mr. Amman.....
It's nice to know that there is still kampong living .
Kudos to all who choose to live and work in Pulau Ubin. City dwellers may romanticise about the idyllic life at Ubin, but it's not easy if you're there day in day out.
wow such eye opening... Never knew this kind of kampung still exist in Singapore
ubin really interesting la hope it will be preserved
love the malays and their passion.
Thank for your compliment
There should be more documentaries about the ordinary people of Singapore/World really
CNA Insider, Your videos always make me happy, so I subscribed!
Harap2 kerajaan Singapura akan perbanyakkan promosi Pulau Jubin. Maaf nak cakap ye tapi orang Singapura selalu promosi negara diorang dengan "multicutural country" tapi apa yang mereka pamerkan hanyalah makanan dan orang2 nya sahaja. Kampung2 Melayu, Budaya2 Melayu Cina India x nampak sangat.
Bro you rock. Keep up the passion 👍👍
Didn't know Pulau Ubin even had taxi. Useful info
My wife and I rode rented bikes around Ubin in Aug 2023. It was hot and steamy but enjoyable nonetheless. We drank 6 ice cold coconuts to help keep cool. Lunch was nice and I think I sank the large beer in about 10 minutes flat!
Next time we'll get Uncle or his friends to drive us around.
Much love from Australia.
Perhaps an encouragement for overseas tourists & tour groups to visit Pulau Ubin would help. A win-win, hopefully a bigger influx of visitors as well as a fresh, more holistic approach for the visitors rather than simply the concrete jungle in the mainland. China tourists especially are abundant anywhere.
AMAZING MAN. LOVE HIM.
TAKE CARE ENCIK.
It's very2 interesting ❤

"PULAU UBIN"👍🏻✨️❤️✨️
Thank you to Uncle Hamid Azman. If not, there will be lesser and lesser people who knows about Pulau Ubin. Singapore's history should be kept. Now that most of Singapore Mainland has been urbanised with so many high rise buildings, much of our history is lost to civilisation. Except for some preserved buildings.
This is so interesting to know. Love this place, renting a bicycle and go around the island.
Saya doa cik azman sehat2 selalu amin3.. Long live orang kampong ubin!!! And long live orang kampong changi!!!!

wowww nice documentary!
Amazing video, thank you for sharing.
I remember visiting Pulau Ubin back in the late 1990s and the quarry was still open to swim. We would take the bumboat to the island, rent a bicycle and cycle around the island followed by a quick dip in the quarry (it was not fenced up back then). I fondly remember the drink stalls dotted around the island where you could quench your thirst with ice cold soda or bottled water.
After a wonderful afternoon we would then hit up one (and only?) seafood restaurant and have a pretty good meal before taking the bumboat back to the mainland. Those were good times and makes me think of visiting Pulau Ubin once more.
Respect. This is singaporean.
I used to go cycling there. The bike rental is reasonable for a day rate. I grew up in kampung myself in the late 70s to late 80s till my late primary school. That's when URA came into the picture and we moved into urban flats. Palau Jubin or Ubin brought back those nostalgic memories.❤❤❤
I look forward to visiting Pulau Ubin & listening to Uncle Azman's stories about the island!
The comedic background music is really holding back this good documentary.
if gov can build long island they can build a land bridge to ubin from singapore.reclaim the water area and build more buildings.ubin can be a tourist hot spot.
The island already been PRESERVED
Wow. Serasa macam hidup dalam kampung ❤❤❤❤
I have visited Pulau Ubin many times, Pulau Ubin is one really good place for beginner cycling off track, its kind of alittle adventure out of Singapore in a jungle but in a safer way😊
I wish Malaysian money will raise up comparable to Singapore so I may visit to this beautiful Island one day.
Pulau ubin The last rustic. kampong. Last Malay family still need to give way to development😮
sehat selalu pakcik
Whenever I miss the kumpung life, I would go to Pulau Ubin. I hope the govt keep this place alive, and keep as a heritage for the future generation
pakcik so passionate
This is so precious ❤
My next visit to Singapore will definitely include Palau Ubin on our itinerary. Some people prefer this kind of life, not too complicated. More years for you Azman Hamid. See you soon!
Wow. They are lucky to have a MD staying amongst them
The government should leave pulai ubin as it is please not built any bridges for vehicles to drive in from mainland it will destroy the natural beauty of pulai ubin.
Give the pakcik a Datukship
Respect to this man
The real malay, preserving malay value and culture, soft spoken and gentle. Not expecting any hands-out like their cousins in the north.
gotta be a real delulu to think even most malays expecting handouts like in the 70s. Wake up boomer, its 2024
wow, discrimination much.
@@naim.raisss discrimination? Where is the discrimination? Who discriminate who? Lol.

Ok pendatang??
So sad only one kumpung left at Pulau Ubin all the others taken over by govt for land 😢😢😢
left only 2 village
@@boyan619 Can anyone still realistically live at Pulau Ubin? I mean can rent the house from one of the villagers? Not govt
Nice kampong... 😢😢😢 But quite sad there is only 40families left there.... Hmmmm
I rmb when Ubin boy was so popular! I always wanted to go there haha
Hope to bring my church group there soon and explore the island via the taxi vans!!!
Semua perkampong Melayu hilang atau di ambil kerajaan. Sejarah kita tak akan jumpa lagi buat selama2 nya. Hanya tinggal kenamgan. 😔
as a singaporean, this is the real singapore!!
with all the local influencer heavily promote bangkok ... is shameful that no local influencer promote these kind of historical places
Maybe encourage schools to organise school trips to Pulau Ubin, that way business will be better for the locals as well as increasing the exposure of the island's rich history.
I will love to visit there.
Hope the government can give these taxi uncles more support
Pulau ubin shld be remain as one of our recreational island. So we local hv a place to get out and see the sea and greenery...it such a beautiful place with nice pple around
I miss pulau ubin...will travel.there soon
Pls preserve this last island . Let us have at least something to talk about our past . And also our dignity 😊
They should promote tourism here…. A lot of people would love to experience the nature and history of this island… I’m sure tourists would love to visit
Wa he travel all they way from main city to Pulau Ubin each day
he travel from east side
although i know it is almost unthinkable for Ubin to be transformed into a sentosa, i really appreciate the people who are in the background really keeping it together over there. I'm delighted to see foreign tourists visiting there (most of the people in this video seem to be foreigners), STB really needs to step up and promote Ubin and perhaps make it into a tiny tioman (without the diving)
the last thing pulau ubin needs is to be turned into another sentosa. commercializing these places is a disaster. what do you think happened to all the other orang pulau communities in singapore when the government took over their places? safe to say most singaporeans are hardly even aware these communities even exist when they are the true indigenous people of singapore
Anyone can tell me how to connect to Mr. Azman Hamid? After watch this video, i want to go to Pulau Ubin next trip to Singapore.
You can go to his taxi stand on Pulau Ubin...
@@deathtrack15 Ah i see. Thank you so much!
