- I wanted to tell you Why I Pruned My Endless Summer Hydrangea in Spring. I usually never prune these mophead hydrangeas in my garden in spring but this year I needed to do this gardening task for a number of reasons . Hope you enjoy these garden hacks .
The rules for pruning these hydrangea macrophylla are very different then the rules for pruning limelight hydrangea (hydrangea paniculata) and annabelle hydrangeas. Since you've already dealt with overwintering hydrangeas , nows the time to take your spring hydrangea care steps .
Gardening flowers with Kelly Lehman is a great way to learn how to plant and grow flowers in your own garden.
Garden planning has never been easier and this garden tip video is a great gardening for beginners video. Kelly will share lots of easy to follow "How To" hydrangea care tips with you throughout the year from her flower farm and NJ Garden. Hope you enjoy her gardening hacks.

I have some Endless Summer’s. I live in Greenwood, Indiana
Just south of Indpls. Love your Utube channel!
Thank you I have learned a lot from you from Ohio
I bought several endless summer and panicle hydrangea bushes over three past year. None of them are looking very good, most of the shrubs haven’t done anything yet in terms of flowers, but I’m hoping they adjust to my yard soon and start being beautiful because I absolutely love hydrangeas!
So beautiful planting. Nice flowers 🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤
Happy you liked them . Thanks for the kind comment 🌸
Hi, Northern NJ! My son just bought a property with huge beautiful hydrangeas but are very overgrown.. I'm here to find out when to prune them to help them stay healthy. 🙂
Hi Kelly! Sorry I missed the live, but thank you for the video! Very helpful! Its been in the 70s here in TN, but it is actually snowing right now! Uugghh!

I found this video while looking for guides to trim my hydrangeas and was thrilled to see another Bernese owner! Love from Chicago!
Hi Kelly, love your videos, they are so informative and it is beautiful to see you gorgeous flowers. Over the last year you have encouraged me to fall back in love with hydrangeas, I remember them in my grandparents garden and this year I planted loads of annabels and a row of limelight paniculatas. I live in Suffolk in England and when my blooms are as big as your I shall send you a photo. In March I watched your video on protecting them from the cold with fleece or even just old sheets and did the same as we had a late winter storm a week after you.
Hi. Naperville,Illinois here. Thanks for your excellent tips!

One more question…we haven’t always put down the acid loving fertilizer. Soil very rocky w/ good drainage. So do I skip the acid loving fertilizer since flowers already so blue? I have the tone stuff too, as an option.
Hi Kelly, I'm viewing from South West France and love your hydrangea videos and tips on pruning 😍

Excited to see you reshape these! I’m in the Hamptons/7A and we’ve inherited some beautiful yet overgrown, spindly mophead hydrangeas that I’ve left alone for this year, but would like to rejuvenate in the Fall. I know I’ll lose next Spring’s blooms but they are all heavy on one side with not many leaves. I think they’ll benefit from it in the long term!
Yes I would agree with you. Chances are , the second flush of hydrangea blooms will be spectacular since the hydrangea can give all the energy to those blooms . 🌸🌸😊😊
Thank you for checking in from the Hamptons ( I grew up in Long Island) and I love your neck of the woods ! 🌸🌎👋😊👍🌻
North Carolina.great information.
Hi Kelly, love ALL your videos. I was actually lucky enough to get one of those "specialty" ones from a grocery store and it actually took and had blooms last season. Hoping for some added growth this year. I also planted 3 hydrangeas last year and gave them extra nitrogen this spring to promote stronger stem growth. Southern NH here.
Thanks for explaining special occasion hydrangeas. We live in Ontario Canada. Helpful video.
I'm so glad you found the video helpful 👍

Thanks for videos. Really enjoy you sharing knowledge. Should try out a pair of Felco pruners. Once you use, never want to use any other. I upgraded a few years ago and highly recommend. From Westlake, OH
Hi Michael , I’m I just ordered a pair from amazon because of your suggestion. Thank you 🌸🌸👍
Very helpful video!! Thanks for the info.
Sure thing Raquel , thank you for the kind comment . It is very much appreciated . 🌸🤗
Florida. Love your info

I'm glad the video was helpful 👍
I read online that I'm suppose to fertilize them 2 to 3 times is that correct? which are the correct months to fertilize them. Also, do they thrive in full sun? I have them in full sun and I see they struggled a lot, even though they had plenty of water. lots of dark spots grew on them.
Hi good morning. Thanks for the information it helps so much to improve my gardening knowledge 😃. I'm in the UK (Essex)

Hello from West Virginia ♥️
I love hydrangeas! They are my favorites . Ordered 8 more for this year , I have 20+ already in my yard .. 😂
Can’t have too many , right ? 😂
Hi Kelly! Thank you for a great channel! Newbie here😂 Upper Bucks Pennsylvania
I’m in Monroe twp and your advice is godsend. Thank you!
Hi Kelly, I can’t find much information on Hydrangea Brestenburg. Would you prune that type? Does it go good in full sun and heat?
I’ve watched this every few months when I have questions. 😂I have a gorgeous 15 yr old blue Endless Summer. Getting tired of the differing lengths of branches from years of tedious & careful pruning. Had a zillion flowers the past 2 yrs, but don’t like the flowers inside the plant. Afraid to trim 1/3 for 3 yrs to even out. Any suggestions? Thanks!
…definitely thinning the dead branches out in the center tomorrow. Did the outside tonite. The 1st summer trim takes me 3-4 hrs & 2-3 days. I leave most flowers for winter interest. They didn’t turn burgandy last Fall/winter tho. Zone 8b.
Watching from Hawai'i. We do have macrophylla type growing here. Wish we could grow some of the smooth leaf types but I don't think they would grow well here.
Hi Kelly,
Just found your video. I planted 3 Endless Summer Hydrangeas this year all on NE side of home. Then moved 2 to the NW side of home both have shade. When I purchased they had and still do have lovely blooms. Normally I would cut blooms off to encourage root growth. Is that something I should do with the Endless Summer Hydrangeas? By the way I’m in southern Wisconsin. In the past with perennial flowers I’ve never had a problem with pinching back to encourage growth. These hydrangea blooms are so pretty I just don’t wanna clip some off. Oh and if anybody has any ideas on how to keep chipmunks and the dogs that chase them out of my garden please advise. Thank you. Love your video.
Hi I'm from Long Island NY. Can you dead head these or not a good idea?
Watching from VA
Thanks for checking in from VA 👋🌸🤗🌎😎💃🎉
Hi Kelly. Great video. I am Lori from Royersford, Pa. I had bought Miracle Gro Fertilizer for my Endless Summer Hydrangea that I planted last Spring. Should I wait another year to use it? I recently bought a shade cloth that is supposed to block out 75% of sun. My entire yard is in the full sun for most of the day. Last year, I protected my newly planted hydrangea with a small umbrella staked in the ground. I opened up the umbrella in the early afternoons. My hydrangea bloomed nicely. What do you think about neem oil? I had some holes in the leaves. Trying to keep the insects away! Thanks for your advice in advance. Oh, by the way, I still have my hydrangea covered with one of those pop up protectors, with the mesh screen on top. I noticed my hydrangea has some green leaves coming up from the center and some green leaves on stems. I don't want to uncover plant yet since we are supposed to have some cold night temps dipping down into the 30s at the end of April!
Did they survive? Mine stays green during our Seattle winters, but I guess we are more mild.
I bought some niko blue hydrangeas to plant in my front yard which is west facing n hot during summer afternoons..Can I plant them or should I plant them in east side?Do you recommend Incrediball smooth(white) in full sun (south/west side)?
I’m in Nj as well. I pruned my limelight a few weeks ago and it was still cold. Now it’s been a little warmer and they are still bare. When would I expect to see some limelight hydrangea to have new growth in our zone (it was a huge overgrown tree with lots of dead branches)
Hi, . My name is Darlene from Columbus, in I have these and appreciate your helpfulness.
Hi Kelly! I really enjoyed this video, so helpful. You have a beautiful garden!
Do you plant your hellebores in clusters? Or do they multiply through the years? Hope your having a good day 😄
👍 from Sweden
Thank you for checking in from Sweden 🌸👍😁👏😊😁🌎
Kelly thank you for this wonderful and informative video. I am in a colder zone in Chicago Zone 5b/6a. I am just hoping that my Nikko blue give me flowers this year as we had a fairly mild winter
Thank you for the tips! My Hydrangeas are actually potted i covered them for winter, but i am not sure when i should uncover them and begins to water them again. I wouldn't them to dry out, but it still kinda cold here in Quebec.
Hi Gen, I would wait until temps warm up a bit . You don’t want to get that winter zap on any new growth . Just make sure you don’t wait too long and overheat then by mistake . It’s a fine line with these crazy along time temps .
Thank you for checking in from Quebec 🌸👏🌎🌻😊👋👍
I have incredible blooms on my endless summer but theyre getting way too large. Im so afraid to prune or deadhead at all. Its mid-November what should i do? I dont know what old wood or new wood are. Please help!!!
Hi Thomas , what a lovely problem to have . So happy your hydrangeas are doing so well. I would cut the blooms and make bouquets from the flowers but only cut the stems down by a few inches so you don’t cut off next year’s flowers .
This will not be a pruning but more of a deadheading . You might as well enjoy the blooms but cutting them with short stems for a lovely short bouquet ( think bridal bouquet size) and place them in a short chubby vase with water .
Next years blooms are most likely already coming in on the small growth you will see in the form of green nodes . You can see the ones you will be leaving in place that will give you flowers next year . 🌸
I use Hollytone in spring for my hydrangeas..
Ahhhh awesome. I’ve seen a lot of gardeners using Hollytone in hydrangea gardening posts . Seems to be a preferred choice Thanks for your comment . I’m going to try it this year 👍👍
Should I remove buds at the top of each stem on some of my bushes
Watching from new haven CT area, love your tips. Potted hydrangea, will it be OK out on half wall porch for one night at 28 degrees? I bought one for an old woman I care for her cat, I'm not going til tomorrow afternoon don't want it do get damaged!
Oh no, really? Bought one for my son but it's from a local nursery. Hope it'll be OK for next year planted. Didn't realize that at all about Easter time hydrangea plants. Thank you
Hi Jackie, the hydrangea would be safer if brought inside since it will be below freezing but it sounds like that may not be possible . It may be fine if the half wall porch offers protection from the elements . Say a prayer and check on it tomorrow . I have a gelling it will be fine . 🌸😊
You can definitely try planting it to see if it is tough enough to come back next year . 🌸
Thank you for checking in from New Haven CT 🌸👍👋😊🌻👏
Hi Kelly! I love all of your videos and have great hydrangeas from your tips! Question - so although now it's closer to summer I do notice some of the wood that has white at the top, is it still safe to cut them back considering they're dead?
I was going to ask the same thing. Did you end up cutting the dead wood ?
@@brkfstinbed Hey I did! They came back great. This year due to the weird weather of going hot and cold all the time on the east coast noticing it's taking one side of my hydrangeas longer to bloom, assuming they're not getting adequate sun :(
@@debikasarkar4565 nice ! I actually ended up cutting the dead wood from mine too. I’m also on the coast and I feel like my hydrangeas are taking awhile to bloom too.. or maybe I’m just being paranoid 😆 But I also didn’t fertilize this year. Def next year tho !
I’ve got bigleaf hydrangeas and I’m southwest Louisiana (zone 9)
I am on zone 5 in NW CT. Ground is still cold.
