It took me... Well I was 9 and I finished it during 2020 and I'm 27 now. So over ten years to make a patchwork blanket. I'd finished the squares in 2018 but took another two years to sew it up.
It sucks that any of us have chronic illness. But as someone with RA and fibromyalgia, I am so grateful to see other disabled makers. It makes creative projects feel more possible when I see other people not be camera ready on a particular day. ❤❤❤
Huzzah for using up 4.5 balls of wool! I do think the shoulder pads would give it an interesting look, in part because putting shoulder pads in a sweater has never occurred to me before.
As a woman who recently learned to knit I love watching you problem solve these patterns. I absolutely love the style of vintage patterns but have no skill myself, so at the moment I’m living vicariously through RUclips.
You'll get there, I'd suggest staring with a really simple pattern for a jumper all in one colour then gradually learn more advanced stitches. If you're unsure of a stitch then knit a little swatch for it :)
Appreciate the thoughtful commentary because this might be my next scrappy project! I just made a Rainbow Jumper out of all scrap yarn and…it barely made a dent in my scrap stash 😅 hopefully this would use up some more!
Creating is always such a gamble, and seems to need any number of iterations to get it right! There are so many variables that have to come together to call it a success! The patchwork looks great! Maybe one of these days you will have the umph to take it in. But, congratulations on using up the yarn! When I don't like how something fits me, I consider donating it to a thrift shop, hoping it will suit someone else. ❤

I think it turned out really fun, but I like a loose fit. Of course, all I could think while watching was "wow, that's really going to make a dent in the stash busting!" so congrats on that!
I wonder if you could take in some width from the bottom of the side panels to give you more of the fit you were hoping for? I think this is such a fun piece! I would love to make something like it once I have enough scraps :)
I mostly like it but it would fit better if there were squares of a denser stitch. I think the lace gives too much. I really like the use it up style and I would likely wear it too. Oh it definately needs shoulder pads !

Your sweater is cute and probably fits the way most fit people who weren't posing for a photo shoot. The sweaters made and shot for your pattern, might not have actually been made from whatever yarn was lying around and the sweaters may have been clothes-pinned at the back to make the fit look more exact. Great job at stash busting and a fun loose-fitting pullover to wear.

I honestly love it! But I also enjoy 70s sweaters with positive ease 😅 they are runner up to 40s negative ease sweaters. I'd wear it all the time. The colours and fit are just fun to me ❤

Claude you can use a tiny crochet hook instead of tapestry needle to “sew” seams using short yarn ends when you are playing yarn chicken when you are sewing up/ weaving it in. Additionally as disabled knitter you might ditch the long straight needles and just use circular needles. I find that long straights just make me too tired. I alternate styles of knitting and knitting projects to cope with fatigue/ brain fog etc. when I was much healthier I could do different styles of long straight knitting like Irish cottage/ lever, Yorkshire swaving and Scottish belt knitting. Have you considered using a Scottish knitting belt to help hold you needle and thus help with tiredness and arm strength issues using long straights. I knit a combo of styles but I am mainly classed as an irish cottage/English knitting but not the slow English where the stop and pick up the yarn. I throw the yarn but I also knit Spanish/Portuguese /Greek along with continental in my mixed of styles that includes backwards ie left needle on to right while holding yarn on right (or reverse of that) or using a yarn pin. What a fun project. i cast this on last week, thank you for the idea. I'm using all shades of green from my stash-4 shades total. I sewed all the panels together with invisible thread & left my live stitchse on waste yarn so that i could just collect them onto a needle to knit the top yoke. I think it would have looked more like the vintage one with burgandy sleeves. I am impressed with your choices for the sleeves since you ran out of both the burgandy and the green. Look great, imho.

It turned out so cute! It definitely needs the shoulder pads, and could you not take in the sides (I'd hate to suggest making those side panels smaller, but maybe...?) a bit so it would fit better? I'd be so sad to put that much effort into a sweater and not want to wear it. One of those options seems the easiest way to make it more wearable, while giving the 40s vibes you want. Oooh, another possibility I've seen other knitters/crocheters use is adding some elastic threads I to the work. This has always been in, say, ribbed edges that have become too large (or were just too big to begin with), but maybe that would be something that would make the fit better...?

@@RetroClaude Ooo, now that's an idea! It also occurs to me that you could narrow those side panels a bit to help with the fit. I see two methods there: either darts or re-knitting them (although that would decrease some of the stash-busting value, but longer sleeves might sort that, so... balance?)

A tip I realized when I have a short length of yarn when sewing up .... are you sitting down lol, so easy ;) just when everything is ready and your ready to thread the needle, stop, without threading, use your needle place it through each side (as if the thread is on the needle), once your needle is through one stitch or loop from each side, then slide the short piece of yarn through the needle and pull through ... ta dahh lol, it was a eureka moment for me when the first time I realized this, with having one or two more to close and a little piece of yarn left ;) Sunshine
I used the same joining method when I did my (brown) harry styles-type cardigan and there was something satisfying about the little tails meeting in the middle on the back of each block and wasting as little yarn as possible
I like slightly looser fitting garments so I didn't think there was anything wrong with the fit, but compared to the pattern image it definitely is not quite right. On its own it's a beautiful piece, but as a recreation I can definitely see how it would be frustrating! Piece-y garments are always tricky because even with gauge swatches I always end up trying on whatever I'm making every few inches to make sure it fits how I want.
I really enjoyed this video and appreciated the look into your making. I knit the viral version for a classmate of my daughter and the seaming felt endless. I thought your FO was pretty but you know what you like in fit. Nice work on the sweater and stash busting.
My solution for any jumper that turns out to be slightly the wrong size just happens to be steek it & turn it I to a cardigan!! If you can be bothered to “do something” about it… if not, I’m sure it will be cozy for wearing around the house, it’s giving me technicolor-dream-coat vibes 😎🔥🙌
Claude, I agree that it's to big on your small frame. I like the concept of the patchwork but a tighter gauge might look a bit nicer, although I hate seaming up process. Sorry to see you looking so poorly. Wish I had a magic wand to make you feel better. I so look forward to your next video. I'm a big 40s fan. Right now I'm knitting a 40s jumper called "Maureen"dk version from squidknits. It's a good experience since it make you do all the math and calculations from my measurements to get jumper to fit.
I'm even later to the party I didn't even know where the craze came from. Hurrah for 4.5 more balls gone, and annoying little ones too. Pity it is a tad to big but yeah for getting it done!
I would love to make another patchwork-style cardigan or sweater, but I need to knock a few things off of my wip list first. The 1940s silhouette really isn't for me, but I do really like the colors and it's a lovely sweater. I hope even though it doesn't fit quite right, that you still are able to get some enjoyment from it, or find someone else who will. Maybe you could redo the side pannels a little thinner...? Either way, thank you so much for sharing!
A few tips for seaming for folks who want to make similar projects: use smoothed down toothpicks or double ended needles to keep the two sides from moving about; leave long tails (about 20 cm or 8 inches usually works well) so you have enough to weave in as well, after seaming; get a short and a curved tapestry needle, they are handy for short ends. As for yours, I think it turned out well, even if it's big on you. Gauge is important and they did mention it (28 sts per 10 cm).
In spite of the fit issues, I actually like yours better than the picture. The light colored contrast sleeves somehow look much nicer than the dark colored matching sleeves in the image.
I loved watching your video! Personally I would have knit it Intarsia, that way I don't have to seam (I don't like that at all!), and you can do with a little less yarn, because you don't need yarn for seaming, you just cross the yarns. I totally understand you choose a seamless pattern for your next project 🌞🌞 Shoulder pads will make it a bit better, and maybe knit the side panels again, with some decreases for bodyshape? Well, at least you used some stash yarn, that is great for counting!
I think its cute. It might look a bit better tucked into a skirt and like you said with some shoulder pads. Loved watching you make it though. it looks like something I would try. As my knitting skills are beginner level.

I think the sweater looks lovely but if the fit bothers you then you could try taking the sides in on your sewing machine and cutting off the excess. I’ve done that with store bought sweaters before 😊
I remember you threaded some elastic through the neckline of a jumper (Engineering Knits style) to make it fit better. Perhaps when you've done some other projects with less sewing up you could come back and thread some elastic in a zigzag or something down the blue side panels? Maybe next Finish It Feb 🤷
I like it. Just wondering if the top could be knitted in jelly role style which might eleviate the sewing process. I am thinking I might try this. Got the idea from Jana on Finnish Knitting Stories who is knitting a jelly role blanket.

Since it’s already seamed could you take it in a bit on the sides to give you the shaping your craving? It looks like it really doesn’t need much and I love everything other than the bumping out! We’ll done!
I would just sew (zigzag) the sides in a bit. And I don't think this would be against "vintage rules" as I was surprised to read the "to complete" instructions for the vintage pattern that I recently made (best way 2085) "The seams can be sewn by machine, or with back-stitch by hand."
How about layered over a short sleeve mock neck turtleneck? With shoulder pads and tucked in to high waist trousers, or belted at the waist might disguise some of the extra ease? I think it is cute slightly oversized, and it turned out well.
The colors are so beautiful and it looks like it would be a lovely early fall sweater with those colors! Sorry the fit isn't quite right, I know you will fix it whenever you feel like it. Your videos always inspire me to bust my own stash!
it'd be a lot of work to re-sew the whole jumper together, but i wonder would it be worth taking out one of the patchwork panels on either the front or back, just to make the jumper more fitted? obviously up to you if you can be bothered doing it; but i think it's such a nice jumper and you've put so much work into making it a whole garment, it'd be a shame to not wear it if you enjoy the way it looks when properly fitted either way, very interesting video!! i love seeing twists on trends like this, it was very cool!!
I think this calls for some sweater surgery. I would use my sewing machine to take in the sides. You can make seams down the middle of the side panels to take in the sweater. I would do it in a contrasting thread in a wide stitch without cutting it at first to see how it looked. If it looked better, I'd use a thread that blends into the blue and then cut off the excess fabric from the seam.
Looks FAB, so the sizing is a bit off but the colour matching went well and you could always wear it over something. You must have the patience of a Saint.
Your work is amazing and fun to Watch. Have you thought about taking in the sideseams? Your a sewist too … Maybe you would get More wear out of that beautiful piece?
You’re a genius! Love the fun patchwork, and this is a statement piece. Maybe you could just sew up the excess under the arm. I do it with my sweaters, even commercial ones if I need to. I enjoy watching the process as well! 🎉
Beautifully made, as always! Sorry you had a rough patch this past month. Shoulder pads and steam blocking may fix the fit issues. If it’s still too large, perhaps you can ask a knitting friend to resew the side panels to take them in a bit.
@@RetroClaude I completely understand the need to take a break from projects like this. You’re SO CLOSE to getting it right. In the past, I’ve been ruthless with taking in the seams on vintage knitting that turned out too large. Astonishingly, the material on the inside didn’t add significant bulk to the finished garment.
Could you play around with shaping the seaming up the side panel, then cutting off the excess once the width is right? Sort of like an afterthought steek-ish thing? Because it seems a shame to not be able to wear it after all that work! But only if you otherwise like it, if it's not your jam in general then it might not be worth it. I don't blame you for going seamless on the next one though! No need to apologise for weird months and wonky health. We're all in the same boat here, so you know we get that stuff happens 💜
I think this one is neat conceptually. The sizing is certainly too big, though the original image does seem to have shoulder pads added to it, which might change the fit slightly, but not help with the sides. Maybe worn with a belt it would be cute? Not sure but I feel like this could be some neat techniques and skills applied to a different project. :)
The idea of it is very nice. Sad that the fit is not what you had in mind. I'm sure you don't want to unpick and redo any part. But you could make the side panels more narrow or triangle shaped (so it doesn't mess up the armhole) to make it more fitted at the waist.
overall a very cute pattern though. I liked how you shared every doubt during the process. I have been looking for some ways to use old yarn I inherited and this looks perfect. I'm thinking to use only moss stitch though, I don't know if I like the different textures in the patchwork pieces...🤔. Btw, now that I discover you channel I won't let go, really like your contents
A cute garment despite your disappointment. I really appreciate the staying true to the vintage pattern. It gives a more realistic understanding of what the process might be though it was absolute wisdom to join your strips first and cadt on the yoke from there - so much neater. I know it would be a pain but could you remove the side panels and gather up the sleeve head to take up the excess sleeve amount? Or just not worth the fuss? You didn't seem all that enamoured by the overall colour and pattern.
I think that the sweater looks great on you as-is, even if it isn’t 1940s style. That said, the picture clearly has shoulder pads, so you can try adding them once you get some. Of course, the real wins here are practicing a skill down to perfection and DOWN 4.5 BALLS OF WOOL!

I would make little straps with a tiny belt buckle, like they do on waistcoats and snatch that waist!

@@RetroClaude Ooo, now that's an idea! It also occurs to me that you could narrow those side panels a bit to help with the fit. I see two methods there: either darts or re-knitting them (although that would decrease some of the stash-busting value, but longer sleeves might sort that, so... balance?)

A tip I realized when I have a short length of yarn when sewing up .... are you sitting down lol, so easy ;) just when everything is ready and your ready to thread the needle, stop, without threading, use your needle place it through each side (as if the thread is on the needle), once your needle is through one stitch or loop from each side, then slide the short piece of yarn through the needle and pull through ... ta dahh lol, it was a eureka moment for me when the first time I realized this, with having one or two more to close and a little piece of yarn left ;) Sunshine

I used the same joining method when I did my (brown) harry styles-type cardigan and there was something satisfying about the little tails meeting in the middle on the back of each block and wasting as little yarn as possible

I like slightly looser fitting garments so I didn't think there was anything wrong with the fit, but compared to the pattern image it definitely is not quite right. On its own it's a beautiful piece, but as a recreation I can definitely see how it would be frustrating! Piece-y garments are always tricky because even with gauge swatches I always end up trying on whatever I'm making every few inches to make sure it fits how I want.
I really enjoyed this video and appreciated the look into your making. I knit the viral version for a classmate of my daughter and the seaming felt endless. I thought your FO was pretty but you know what you like in fit. Nice work on the sweater and stash busting.
My solution for any jumper that turns out to be slightly the wrong size just happens to be steek it & turn it I to a cardigan!! If you can be bothered to “do something” about it… if not, I’m sure it will be cozy for wearing around the house, it’s giving me technicolor-dream-coat vibes 😎🔥🙌

Claude, I agree that it's to big on your small frame. I like the concept of the patchwork but a tighter gauge might look a bit nicer, although I hate seaming up process.

Right now I'm knitting a 40s jumper called "Maureen"dk version from squidknits. It's a good experience since it make you do all the math and calculations from my measurements to get jumper to fit.

I would love to make another patchwork-style cardigan or sweater, but I need to knock a few things off of my wip list first. The 1940s silhouette really isn't for me, but I do really like the colors and it's a lovely sweater. I hope even though it doesn't fit quite right, that you still are able to get some enjoyment from it, or find someone else who will. Maybe you could redo the side pannels a little thinner...? Either way, thank you so much for sharing!
A few tips for seaming for folks who want to make similar projects: use smoothed down toothpicks or double ended needles to keep the two sides from moving about; leave long tails (about 20 cm or 8 inches usually works well) so you have enough to weave in as well, after seaming; get a short and a curved tapestry needle, they are handy for short ends. As for yours, I think it turned out well, even if it's big on you. Gauge is important and they did mention it (28 sts per 10 cm).

In spite of the fit issues, I actually like yours better than the picture. The light colored contrast sleeves somehow look much nicer than the dark colored matching sleeves in the image.
I loved watching your video! Personally I would have knit it Intarsia, that way I don't have to seam (I don't like that at all!), and you can do with a little less yarn, because you don't need yarn for seaming, you just cross the yarns. I totally understand you choose a seamless pattern for your next project 🌞🌞 Shoulder pads will make it a bit better, and maybe knit the side panels again, with some decreases for bodyshape? Well, at least you used some stash yarn, that is great for counting!

I think the sweater looks lovely but if the fit bothers you then you could try taking the sides in on your sewing machine and cutting off the excess. I’ve done that with store bought sweaters before 😊

I remember you threaded some elastic through the neckline of a jumper (Engineering Knits style) to make it fit better. Perhaps when you've done some other projects with less sewing up you could come back and thread some elastic in a zigzag or something down the blue side panels? Maybe next Finish It Feb 🤷

I'm so curious about this, I read that jelly roll doesnt require sewing and I just cant understand how that's possible! I would like to make this jumper but the seaming together is a bit much for me, so I'm interested in how to make it more seamless😅

I would just sew (zigzag) the sides in a bit. And I don't think this would be against "vintage rules" as I was surprised to read the "to complete" instructions for the vintage pattern that I recently made (best way 2085) "The seams can be sewn by machine, or with back-stitch by hand."
How about layered over a short sleeve mock neck turtleneck? With shoulder pads and tucked in to high waist trousers, or belted at the waist might disguise some of the extra ease? I think it is cute slightly oversized, and it turned out well.

it'd be a lot of work to re-sew the whole jumper together, but i wonder would it be worth taking out one of the patchwork panels on either the front or back, just to make the jumper more fitted?
obviously up to you if you can be bothered doing it; but i think it's such a nice jumper and you've put so much work into making it a whole garment, it'd be a shame to not wear it if you enjoy the way it looks when properly fitted

I think this calls for some sweater surgery. I would use my sewing machine to take in the sides. You can make seams down the middle of the side panels to take in the sweater. I would do it in a contrasting thread in a wide stitch without cutting it at first to see how it looked. If it looked better, I'd use a thread that blends into the blue and then cut off the excess fabric from the seam.

Looks FAB, so the sizing is a bit off but the colour matching went well and you could always wear it over something. You must have the patience of a Saint.

If it’s still too large, perhaps you can ask a knitting friend to resew the side panels to take them in a bit.
I think it will need work for sure. But I need a break from it before I start fixing it. I have some ideas so I might do a few experiments 😊

In the past, I’ve been ruthless with taking in the seams on vintage knitting that turned out too large. Astonishingly, the material on the inside didn’t add significant bulk to the finished garment.
Could you play around with shaping the seaming up the side panel, then cutting off the excess once the width is right? Sort of like an afterthought steek-ish thing? Because it seems a shame to not be able to wear it after all that work! But only if you otherwise like it, if it's not your jam in general then it might not be worth it. I don't blame you for going seamless on the next one though!

I think this one is neat conceptually. The sizing is certainly too big, though the original image does seem to have shoulder pads added to it, which might change the fit slightly, but not help with the sides. Maybe worn with a belt it would be cute? Not sure but I feel like this could be some neat techniques and skills applied to a different project. :)

The idea of it is very nice. Sad that the fit is not what you had in mind. I'm sure you don't want to unpick and redo any part. But you could make the side panels more narrow or triangle shaped (so it doesn't mess up the armhole) to make it more fitted at the waist.
overall a very cute pattern though. I liked how you shared every doubt during the process. I have been looking for some ways to use old yarn I inherited and this looks perfect. I'm thinking to use only moss stitch though, I don't know if I like the different textures in the patchwork pieces...🤔. Btw, now that I discover you channel I won't let go, really like your contents
A cute garment despite your disappointment. I really appreciate the staying true to the vintage pattern. It gives a more realistic understanding of what the process might be though it was absolute wisdom to join your strips first and cadt on the yoke from there - so much neater. I know it would be a pain but could you remove the side panels and gather up the sleeve head to take up the excess sleeve amount? Or just not worth the fuss? You didn't seem all that enamoured by the overall colour and pattern.
I think it's a bit busy for my taste. I think I might just need a break from it before I try and fix it 😊

I think that the sweater looks great on you as-is, even if it isn’t 1940s style. That said, the picture clearly has shoulder pads, so you can try adding them once you get some. Of course, the real wins here are practicing a skill down to perfection and DOWN 4.5 BALLS OF WOOL!
