I have said the words "I need time to work on myself" When I was on a train coming back from work at about 35 and two guys got on, both mid to late 40's, one was in shape, dressed great in clothes that looked tailored Brown brogues, dark blue jeans, tucked in shirt and a tweed sports jacket the other guy dressed a bit younger than he should, Nike Airmax sneakers, tracksuit, baseball cap , a fair amount of bling and when they got off a few stops later a group of women sitting nearby basically were coo'ing over the well dressed guy and how they wished their man would dress like that, as well as taking the mick out of the other guy for trying to dress far too young, they started to crack up when one of them said they wouldn't let their 13 year old son dress that immature. As I was laughing to myself, I looked down. I had the same sneakers on and then it hit me, I haven't evolved dress wise since I was old enough to buy my own clothes and I felt a bit ashamed of myself, I didn't want to be that guy nearing 50 and still dressing like a teenage boy. When I got home, I set aside some time to get myself into shape, diet and make some changes. I used the well dressed guy as my style inspiration and I believed it bettered me as a person.
@@SydneyGreenstreet1227 It was more of an awakening to my current situation, I could see my reflection on the train glass window and for the first time in like 6 years, I just didn't like what I was staring at.
Sounds like what I wear, the Tweed etc.. I’m pretty much at the point where I’m not getting a lot of inspiration from what other men wear, although I have to say the better dressed ones acknowledge me and always glance down (checking what Shoes/Boots I’m wearing) same goes for me though. You can put money that women check out your outfit and especially your footwear..
Thanks John for this video. I am 71 years old, went through a divorce 8 years ago after 33 years and had to rediscover myself, so.....after 5 years of personal counseling, have been on a trajectory of growth and development that is very satisfying. I have found my spiritual side (not religious, there is a difference), started playing guitar 4 years ago after a 55 year hiatus from the instrument, and while I have always been a very positive guy, I have found that my friends have changed as I have grown!! I highly recommend counseling for those out there that are not sure of themselves, it is truly a fantastic way to learn about yourself and move forward. Oh, and once you start on this journey of personal growth, it never stops, you just keep learning more and more, and become a better version of you. Thanks for all you do, and could you do some videos on dress specifically for us 70 somethings? Jerry
Legend, John. I took over 4 years to work on myself. About a month ago I re-entered the dating scene. One thing my new gf has said she loves the way I dress and how I dress appropriately for the situation. Your channel has helped. Thank you.
John, I hope you don’t tire of hearing that, in my opinion, you would have made an excellent therapist. You consistently have made several impacts on how I dress, behave and approach difficult situations. And for that I am grateful. You make a difference. Thank you!
Oh Snap!! You tell em, John! To those who always seem to be struggling, trying to bring others down, I say (in a nice way) step it up or step aside. Speaking as a very single guy, who likes hanging out with himself, I think it's healthy to spend time alone. Going to dinner or a movie by yourself is good for you. It's basically dating yourself, and I think it's fantastic! I believe when you do more things on your own it builds a confidence that over time allows you to take bigger chances in life. I am not by any means knocking relationships, I think they are great, for others, just not my thing. 🥂
I worked on myself several years ago and eliminated bad sleeping habits and bad health that was causing me to be sluggish all the time. As a result I had the energy to open up my first business and surprisingly made six figures in the first year in the industry I knew nothing about. I'm a firm believer on working on yourself before you demand a lot from yourself.
That is what my channel is about. It is never too late to start exercising and changing your nutrition. Anyone can do it. Men and women. Health is so important to all of us for longevity. That includes mental health. Seriously, anyone can do it. Anyone. There are no "secrets". Just be disciplined and you will see great changes. Oh and I am well past my 40s. I will be 62 in October 2022. Oh and I do like to dress well. As for the anger issues unfortunately, social media brings out the worse. Great video John.
There you go again...telling it like it is! It's accountability to ourselves first and foremost, and accountability to those around us. What some of us have realized and others haven't is that what we put out there (our energy, our vibe, our appearance, our attitude) creates what comes back to us. And what the angry folks don't realize is that when they're out in the world, they're wearing that anger and resentment like a poorly fitted coat for everyone to see. They may think it's concealed, but people are perceptive in amazing ways and the stench of inner anger and resentment is strong. And, they wonder why things aren't going their way? It's a lot easier and safer for people to tear other people down, claim woe is me and be bitter about other people's success. It takes hard work and guts to look in the mirror and say, "I'm the problem and what happens good or bad to be, is my responsibility."
Using pain as the benchmark, I have been in pain. I didn't get it fixed, I learned to live with it. Sometimes it goes away by itself. It's too much work to get it fixed.
We as men need to work on ourselves, meaning, hitting the gym 3-4 days a week, take our vitamins, and level up financially so we can crack 6 figures in our first year in sales. Yes, high ticket sales is where it's at, but that's another discussion. Men should dress better as we age, especially if you're 30+. Men should start wearing sports coats with polo shirts, khakis or dress slacks and dress shoes (monk straps, black leather ankle boots or oxfords) so we can get better treatment in public. Or wear suits with or without ties, good smelling cologne and a watch. Make sure your beard, gotee, hair is on point. The point is that we as men should stand out from the crowd. Good vid, by the way.
This caught me off guard when I was in Europe in 2018, I was comfortable wearing my Harley shirt, ripped blue jeans and boots. I quickly realized that I need to step up my game and basically grow up. One of the best things I ever did.
Incredible video John! I actually hate the term "Working on yourself" or "Taking me time".... I actually think its a cop out for someone's life not going well, and them making excuses for it. The best people that actually and truly work on things... are the ones who don't tell everyone. #legend
You are so right about the anger issue. Back in the 1990s, I worked in NYC for a German company that had summer college students from Germany. The female who worked in my department was always honest and straightforward. One day she asked me why I was always in a bad mood. I discussed this with her and I realized that she was right. From that moment I tried to change my attitude. That little comment greatly improved my life.
Great video. I just de cluttered my kitchen in a whopping 90 seconds. Also Mr Coffee doesn’t need to be out on the kitchen countertop . I can improve little things and work up to more challenging issues.
At age 70, I threw out old 'bum around ' Polos, bought bright colored shirts, threw out beat-up loafers, got better shoes for dress and casual. At 70, can still improve. Lastly, dumped old Sedan, got a 290 hp Maxima. Hot to trot !!
Thanks for this video, John. When you are in your 40s, you are not same person as you were at age 18, 25, even 30. I'm feeling and thinking more differently. I also embrace single hood.. but I will see where my head is by age 50🙂
John, this is great content and I was just thinking along the same line as far as just being a better version of who you are. If you're a jeans and t shirt guy, wear nicer jeans and t shirts! Self work is most important as a man!!
The most expensive and best fitting clothes in the world, won't get us very far if we're bankrupt as human beings. A very wise man once told me, "We cannot think our way into right living, we must live our way into right thinking". Translation...my ACTIONS are the keys to changing my thoughts for the better. I was also told that if I wanted to be esteemed by others, do esteemable things. Brilliant, why didn't I think of that? 😉 All of this hinges on me being rigorously honest with myself. While far from perfect, I'm a firm believer in taking responsibility for every aspect of my life. "Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference".
Hi John good to see you again hope lots of your followers try this as the changers can be great . Keep up the good work I’m going to try the course you advertise. Regards. C Barker
Hey John!! Great videos, just have a question for you, what are the best jeans to buy when you have no ass at all and every waistline does not fit right??
Borrowing from a Star Wars analogy … falling for the “Redpill” trap is a pathway to the Dark Side of the Force. Do you want be one with the Living Force, at peace with oneself like Obi Wan, or a sniveling baby like Anakin?

John, could you do a video on how you style your hair? Your morning/evening preps?
Sometimes we become "change" junkies, i.e. we listen to the message of change, but don't actually change, instead we find more messages about change.
Thanks John.
Great video glad you posted keep them coming thanks

I like Jordan Peterson, but can't get along with his God-bothering. As with any religious person, he needs to keep it to himself.
