Opinion. Trying to make sense of what brass are doing. This option makes sense given Dak's past and expected salary demands.

Jerry and coaches got Dak good players some receivers, some lineman and a good defense and his still couldn't produce. Dak gave what he could to the team and he will not get the cowboys to a superbowl.

Dak Prescott had his shot if he doesn't pull through this year they need to trade him for what they can get give Trey Lance a shot. A former first-round pick wasting away on the bench!! He's coming up to the end of his contract this year the same as Prescott Dallas has a big decision to make and I sincerely hope Trey is the one chosen to stay in Dallas. He's younger, more versitile, and im sure he's hungrier than Dak for a ring. He's had NO significant injuries as of yet and hes fast on his feet. Not the most accurate quarterback but with the right amount of playtime and coaching Trey can take over in Big D. The man has the talent he just needs his shot to prove it🤙

Your report of Trey Lance was wrapped in subjective "overconcerns" about not rousing up any of your followers that have a full range of attitudes about Lance, with few if any that have seen him work out in person, or on film. Your claiming Lance is not competitive with Prescott or No.2 backup qb is purely your BS. Trey Lance is far better than Prescott. I have seen his college and 49er films. It is obvious you haven't, and it seems you never thought about doing so. Jerry Jones has done his homework on Lance, and has views all those films. Your prejudice in not suggesting anything that would suggest Lance is competitive for a franchise qb is not up to your professional standard.
Lance has been performing all last year as the qb of opposing teams, doing all those things, all those skills you described, in helping the Cowboys get prepared for each game last season.
You're in the Fishbowl, and the Star "is right over there," you point out each day. It seems you've never before seen Lance perform other than Day 2 of OTAs this year.
Fish, you are an intelligent person, with perception, and with football knowledge. But your reporting lacks authenticity. It's too shaded with not to stir up the fan base when, in fact, the fan base is yearning for objective assessments of all players and coaches. No one expects you to be perfect with assessments, but they do expect you to have the courage to tell it as it is, and not from your lying eyes. Live up to doing your best as a professional.
If I were Lance's agent, I'd tell Jerry Jones Trey Lance is a franchise qb, NOW, TODAY, and will be one in 2025. He won't be fighting for a backup role. He will be sought after. He is in charge of his future starting in March of 2025 in next season. I'm sure he'd like to be the Cowboys francise qb, but write it down. He will be a franchise qb next year.
This is his 4th year in the league dude, and he's played a grand total of 22 games at QB in his entire life. Everything you said is just wishful thinking and is based on nothing but your desire to have Dak replaced with anyone. He couldn't win the starting job in SF, couldn't win the backup job in SF, and is now competing for the backup job here.
He is not a franchise QB today. He is not a starting QB today. He is trying to save what's left of his career today. Maybe one day he'll be a starter, but there are steps to this.

He was sent to run like a fullback between the tackles and broke his ankle. The third year was last year. He played the role of opposing qbs to help the cowboys prepare for their season games. There's been a ton of things to observe on Trey Lance. Fish does not appear to have seen any of Lance's performances or films, not does it appear that you have. Not a criticism of you, but I have seen considerable. Fish has followed the NFL for 40 years, and the Cowboys and each of their OTAs for 30 years. His post this morning was echoing what other writers have written, plus what the coaches and Prescott mentioned. Fish leans to more of an entertainer and business man with emphasis on keeping his paying fans. I expect a professional reporter. That's not wishful thinking.

Fish has access to every Cowboy's practice and OTA. Fish has access to every highlight reel you do plus All 22. He's seen him practice and he's seen him play.
We've all seen him play dude. We've all seen the highlights. However, there aren't that many b/c he hasn't played much, so until he actually plays more than 2 games in a row he's not a franchise anything.
Just because he has potential or a perceived high ceiling doesn't mean anything. He hasn't played. I don't care who you blame for the injury. I don't care about the reasons he hasn't played. He hasn't played.
If he develops into a starter, great! If he develops into our starter, great! If he develops into a better QB than Dak, even better! If he takes over the team this year and goes on a 2016 run, fantastic!
But stop acting like a guy whose resume consists of 102 passing attempts for a whopping 56 completions to go along with 5 TD's and 3 INT's is anything more than a project at this point. I get that you don't like Dak. I get that you want him gone yesterday. I get that you think he's easy to replace. But, you're getting all worked up over OTA's which is nothing more than passing drills.
Let me add this following important perspective. What is the Cowboys MISSION? Is it very clearly to seek and win the Superbowl? Or, is it to be competive, profitable and entertaining each year? There is a HUGE DIFFERENCE. Jerry Jones doesn't have as much time left as most, nor do I: I'm 94 in two months. I would like to see the cowboys reach at least one superbowl, more for Jerry for all he's done through the years for cowboy fans, the NFL and football in America.
If there are those that are content with reaching the playoffs, at best, but never able to advance and compete with the best of the best, then that's what they have now. And there is valid praise for those achievements.
However, my focus and "mission" is to build a team that will make the Superbowl, and my perspectives and comments are laser--focused on that mission.
I respect those that believe Dak Prescott is the man that can achieve that mission, just give him more time and years. I'm not of that fold, and I don't believe most Cowboy fans are either.
My criticism of Fish is that in my opinion he's more of a showman, and entertainer, than performing as a professional sports journalist, including scouting talent. If one lacks that all that's left is writing for entertainment. He has the talent to be both, but in my opionion, fails to live up first and foremost as a professional sports writer analyist.

If you and Fish have seen all the films on Lance, and personally seen him play, I don't buy that for one second. Neither of you have demonstrated any creditble evidence to that effect. Of course, we all want to see him perform with pads on in a real game. Our difference is I'm highly confident of what we will see, and you are not. I'd go even further. I'd like Lance to play season games as well as preseason, and of the season games I'd choose those with the very best of playoff teams, especially the 49ers. That's my level of confidence.

Isn't this why he was a lottery pick in the first place? I expect him to look good working out. It matters very little to me what OTA's look like. I'm willing to wait on game film. I say this not bashing the video. We are searching for content this time of year, I get it.
To bad they didn't play him against 49ers, they treated him dirty n he knows there weaknesses on defense. I'm surprised regardless of the starter. More teams don't try to take advantage if teams they've acquired qbs from..if anyone can tell me I'd like to know.but I think it's worth a try.

Like Steve Smith said, you keep giving QB's chance after chance, Lances 4th year, because he was drafted in first round. SF made there worst trade ever by giving 3 # 1's and gave him up for a forth. Game speed is what Lance couldn't do, after 1st read rarely got to second. Last pick Purdy saved SF drafting by being all the things and far more than what they hoped Lance would be.

Detroit made it to the nfc championship ,so maybe the cowboys can do it. Detroit took over 30years to win a playoff game, remember we were close to beating Sankranti 2 years ago in playoffs bad clock management, we could have won it. So improve run defense offensive line and be more physical and play consistent, maybe it will get us over the hump in the next year or 2.

practice DOES matter. And how a QB performs in practice DOES matter. What happens in games matters MORE of course. But first you have to excel in learning the material, burn things into muscle memory with many reps.
If a QB stinks in practice, he doesn't get to the game. If he looks great in the first OTA in May...... then hey its a reason for Cowboy fans to feel something good. Nobody (sensible) said hey fire Dak now!

@@Gimmemine59 you have seen this play out for years now. You don't stop the run and you lose the possession battle. You haven't run the ball at level you need to and it has mostly been on the passing game to put points up. It all comes down to losing the clock and having to take yardage in chunks.

I predict this, if Trey does well in preseason, you will see the Cowboys trying to sign him as backup through 2026 at least. Then they will let Dak play out his current contract and make him an offer before FA, which they are allowed to do because he is still a Cowboy until FA hits and another team pays him or doesn't pay him. But the only QB that I see that could get a contract extension this year is Lance. But that depends on how he does in preseason.
